When Max got to the Hubermann household he felt qualms that he was going to get them in trouble. Liesel and Max get each other through tough times by having three things in common: train, dreams, and fists. They both have trains in common because they both took a train to come to the Hubermanns’ house. They also have dreams in common because they both dream about a lot of things. For instance Max dreams about fighting with Hitler. And for instance Liesel dreams about her and her brother both on the train and different ways of how he had died. And the last thing that they have in common are fists because Liesel fought a kid in the school yard. And Max dreamed about boxing with Hitler (Zusak 231). Another example of how Liesel and Max get each other through tough times is Max makes Liesel a book for her birthday. When Max is making Liesel a book for her birthday Liesel always wants to volunteer to go down stairs to bring Max his food, but Rosa won’t let her go down stairs because she knows that Max is making Liesel something for her birthday. The book that Max makes Liesel starts off with saying that he was scared all his life of lots and lots of men constantly standing over him. And he thinks that his first standover man was his father but his father vanished before he could remember him. He is also saying in the book that when he was a boy he liked to fight and sometimes he would lose and he also explains that he is afraid to go to sleep and wake up finding somebody that he did not want to see standing or sitting right next to him but lucky for him it was always his friend. When Max was hiding he dreamed of Hans and the hardest part was when he traveled to find him. Out of luck Max finally found Hans’s house and he slept for three days in Liesel’s bed. This time it was not a man standing over him but somebody else and as time passed by Liesel and Max had three things in common they both
Max uses Mein Kampf as a kind of cover so people wouldn’t suspect that he was a Jew and he escapes to the Hubermann’s house as Hans promised to help the Vandenburg’s if they ever needed it as he was friends with Max’s father in the war and Max’s father saved Hans’ life. Liesel is curious but also scared of Max at first but they bond over the fact that they both have nightmares, have lost their families and are both “fist-fighters” Since Max is always hiding in the basement, Liesel begins to describe the weather to him and brought him snow where they had a snowball fight and built a snowman with Hans and Rosa. Soon after, Max falls ill and she brings him 13 presents, hoping that he will wake up and reads to him every morning and night. Max also begins to share stories with Liesel and for her birthday makes her a book called “The Standover Man” which is about his life and journey. Max also begins to have daydreams where he fights Hitler and Hitler always uses his words to excite the crowd and uses them as a weapon. Liesel and Rudy also begin to steal food with a group of

Lennie realizes he would be alone without George, but he never has known anyone else to depend on but George, and from that, they have a bond, a friendship. This shows Lennie’s need for his relationship with George.
The quote that stuck with me trough the book was one not so much about the emotions that can with the Holocaust, but more of the actions that people had to take during this time.
In the novel the book thief by Markus Zusak, Liesel states, “as long as both she and Rudy lived she would never kiss that miserable, filthy Saukerl (Zusak, 55). Liesel Memiger, the protagonist in the novel, is the foster daughter of Hans and Rosa Huberman. When Liesel first arrives at Himmel Street, a boy with hair the color of lemons walks her to school for her first day, she does not like him at first, but little does she know he will become her best friend (Zusak, 25-34). This is ironic because Liesel never does kiss Rudy until after he is dead. Rudy Steiner is Liesel’s best friend he has hair the color of lemons `and is adventurous and courageous. He wants Liesel to kiss him throughout the whole book but she never does until he is dead. In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Death gives clear examples from Liesel and Rudy’s different points of view on their relationship and we can see how it changes throughout the story.
Rosa is the one to jump to this conclusion, "I bet it started with the snowman -fooling around with ice and snow in the cold down there" (Zusak 315). Rosa primes Liesel's guilt by identifying that the ice could possibly be the source of Max's' illness. This identification causes Liesel to feel guilt as she questions herself, "Why did I have to bring all that snow down" (Zusak 316). Liesel seems to feel guilt stronger in this situation considering she turkey cares about Max. Liesel directly displays her guilt when she clenches her hands, "She clenched her hands, as if to pray" (Zusak 316). This shows that she feels guilty for her actions and results in her praying for Max’s

In the novel The Book Thief, setting and point of view affect the theme and book a lot. The point of view of this novel is third person omniscient and a little bit of second and first person when the narrator talks about himself or to the reader. The setting of the story is Nazi Germany and it is based on a young girl named Liesel Meminger and what her life was like during this time. Her story is told by the narrator, death. Mark Zusak, the author, uses setting and point of view to express the theme of the novel because there was so much death happening, Liesel encountered him so many times, causing him to be able to tell her story; without this setting and the narrator, the theme story would have been different.
Defiance is the act of boldly resisting authority or any opposing force. The cause of defiance is usually a feeling of discontent with one’s life or a strong belief that the opposing side is wrong. In “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury and “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, the characters revolt against their government because they are unsatisfied with their lives. This leads to their discovery of who they really are. In Fahrenheit 451, all books are banned and anyone who possesses them gets their house burned. In The Book Thief, Hitler’s Nazi party is very strict and enforces many harsh laws for the citizens of Nazi, Germany. However, many of the characters in both of these books chose to defy the law rather than stand by passively. Despite the often negative consequences, defiance liberates the characters because they are standing up for their important values and following their beliefs, leading them to a fulfilling life.
JW: I found it exciting to know the follow up to this chapter starts off as a calm before the storm, shown almost like a foreboding action to peer into the future. The story tells of Cortez’s escape, sharing all the pain and agony that became of his troops. They cry out as their lungs fill with water and their body’s act as pin cushions. This part of the story excited me, what was going to come next. My idea has already been supported by my own knowledge of the events that aspired, a plague would hit soon after Cortez left. This is what the Chapter XV was about, the plague and the Tenochtitlan inhabitance. Gracia Limons, telling of the people's suffering was clear as day to me, what these people suffered was worse than the humiliation Cortez
After she had read Mein Kampf, Liesel had realized the true power of what books can bring. She discovered that not only can books bring joy and a sense of escape to the reader, but can preach hate and bigotry as well. This is then changed by Max’s story, The Standing Man. The story illustrates Max’s strong relationship with Liesel and how she has helped him out through his tough times. However, the important aspect of the story is not the story itself, but on what the story is written. To write his story, Max had painted over the pages of Mein Kampf and on those he writes his story. This symbolizes the fact that the kind words that were the reason Liesel had gotten into reading in the first place, and that they were not to be trumped by the evilness of Mein Kampf. Liesel believes that kindness, friendship, and love trump the hate and evil in the
“Like most misery, it started with apparent happiness” (84). In the beginning, we are introduced to the narrator by the name of Death. He informs the readers that he has many stories, but only remembers the ones that interest him. The tale of Liesel Meminger is one such tale, as he was always fascinated by her will to live through the most horrible instances. It should be duly noted however, that this story does not have a happy ending. Death makes this clear before we even have a chance to get our hopes up. He tells us that everyone dies; the amount of time that they last is truly the only difference. After this sordid fact is in place, he mentions just Liesel first attracted his attention.
Zusak uses his characters and their experiences to demonstrate the theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature in the novel. First, Zusak uses his character, Rudy, to support his theme of the brutality and beauty of human nature. Rudy’s brutality is revealed in a certain moment when he devises a plan to steal food from the priest by causing the delivery boy to wreck on the way to the priest’s house. Rudy’s beauty is also displayed in many things he does for Liesel, such as jumping in the ice-cold river for her book.
