In April 1823 the Prophet, Joseph Smith was spoken to by the Angel Moroni. The angel told him that the Lord had a larger purpose for him and informed him that the Holy Scripture included more than what is dictated in the Bible. From there, Joseph was guided to the burial place of two golden plates inscribed with the word of God by the Nephites and other ancient prophets. With inspiration from God, Joseph translated these plates into English and compiled them into what is now known as, the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. Although given the message in 1823, Smith did not publish the Book of Mormon until 1830. The book contains the story of Jesus Christ’s personal ministry to the ancient people of the Americas following after …show more content…
It is from this that the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints essentially became called the Mormon Church. Originally, ‘Mormon’ was considered a derogatory term. However, as time passed, the Church accepted this nickname, but prefers the term Latter Day Saints. The Church originated in upstate New York, but has spread across the American continents and throughout the world. To date, there are around 15 million members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.
Within any religion, there is a multitude of human needs that are addressed. It is due to these needs that people are initially drawn to the religion. The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints is no different. This religion seems to address emotional and personal needs, but does not neglect the physical. The specific needs addressed by the Mormon faith include: hope, belonging, love, and purpose. The religion provides hope for its members because it gives them something to look forward to. By believing and abiding by the teachings in the Book of they understand that death isn’t the end. They will eventually have everlasting life
The Difficulties of Mormons and Gentiles Living Together The Mormons and the gentiles found it difficult to get along it was both the Mormons and gentiles fault. When large amounts of Mormons moved to a new settlement e.g. Illinois, the gentiles felt that they were going to take over and rule their area. The gentiles attacked the Mormons to show them who is boss. The Mormons didn't fight back but made a police unit, the Danites this protected the Mormons and tried to keep peace. The gentile's thought that this was an army and attacked the Mormons forcing them to go.
Before the founding and organizing of the LDS church and introduction of polygamy, Joseph Smith received bitter persecution. He was tarred and feathered by a mob, but this was nothing compared to the treatment the saints received when their practice of polygamy became well known (Arrington JS 26-7). In order to escape the torture, Joseph Smith led one hundred and fifty or more saints from New York to Kirtland, Ohio in 1831 (Arrington JS 21). After living in harmony with the native Gentiles for several years, the town of Kirtland be...
I am regularly (such as last night) in conversation with well-educated Mormons who struggle when trying to deal with rational concepts related to things like science, investment strategies, politics and other purely secular matters. And I see in their struggles infections likely attributable to the magical thinking at the heart of what is required these days to be a literally believing Mormon. The conversation in which I participated last night that caused this essay had to do with an investment opportunity that a bright, successful young Mormon had been offered. Some Mormons still respect my judgment regarding investments that seem not to require "the Spirit", and he wanted to run by me what had been proposed to him. I was happy to listen for a few minutes and tell him what I thought.
The history of the Mormon Church goes back to 1863 when its founder, Joseph Smith, II, claimed to have a vision of the angel Moroni, who appeared to him in upper New York State and instructed him to interpret ancient writings on gold plates. The Mormon doctrine states that Jesus, after His resurrection, appeared to the Native Americans. The accounts with the Native Americans were transcribed onto the gold plates according to Moroni, the messenger. One doctrine of the Mormon Church, The Pearl of Great Price, shares a lot of the private journals of founder Joseph Smith. Founder Smith recalls, "He called me by name, and said that he was a messenger...and that his name was Moroni...," (Pearl. II:33) This is one of the main cornerstones of the Mormon doctrine. The Mormon Church had its beginnings from New York and traveled to Kirtland, Ohio, then on to Spring Hill (Independence), Missouri, and finally traveled back to Nauvoo, Illinois. It was at Nauvoo where on, Jun 27, 1844, Joseph Smith, III, his brother Hyrum Smith and friend John Taylor were ambushed at the Nauvoo-Carthage Jail. In the course of events that transpired, Joseph and Hyrum w...

It is noted in Navajo Tradition, Mormon Life that the origins of the universe in both cultures share common elements. Both cultures believe in one all-powerful creator of the universe, who was assisted by other exceptional beings and gods in organizing the worlds (McPherson, 32-33). Both cultures also have a large emphasis on faith, prayer, and making offerings to their deities (McPherson, 33- 37). These similarities are something that creates a certain amount of respect between the two groups, Clyde Klickhohn is quoted as saying “...Mormons tended to show more respect for and interest in Indian customs; more than other whites...” (Mcpherson, 5). It is with these common themes that a Navajo, like Jim, could adapt and convert to Mormonism while maintaining their traditional Navajo beliefs. Jim's brother Charlie said “ I feel like I have my religion and follow in their (ancestors) footsteps” (McPherson,
Metanarrative Essay The Biblical metanarrative can be explained by a Christian as the true and triumphant story from the beginning in Genesis until the future is prophesied in Revelation. Others who may not be a Christian do not understand the true power and love God has over us and for us and may just simply see it as a story or a rule book that they don’t want to follow. They see the Bible and all the things and plans God has for us and our lives and just think they don’t want any part of it and instead they live in sin. It is important that these people not only learn the true story but understand it as well.
They belive that Joseph Smith was called to be a prophet for the church and given the task of translating the book of mormon. The Book of Mormon is Another testament of Jesus Christ, similar to the Bible. He soon founded his own church and began converting people to his faith. Soon persecuted for their beliefs, they left New York moving first to Ohio, then Missouri, and finally Nauvoo, Illinois where they lived for five years. At that time, an anti-Mormon lynch mob found and killed Joseph and his brother Hyrum Smith. Brigham Young then became Smith's successor as the second prophet of the church, and led the Mormons away to Utah where they settled at Salt- Lake-
Actually, “Mormon” is just a nickname for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. (Another nickname is the acronym LDS) A cursory glance at the church’s full name contains Christ’s name. By the very name of their church, members state their belief in Christ.

The 1830 publication of the “Book of Mormon” by Joseph Smith, officially established the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ believe that Smith, under divine guidance, translated a set of golden plates into the Book of Mormon. This was the first of several literary works that were said to contain proper doctrine of the beliefs and views of the Mormon religion. Throughout the development of the Church, several aspects of the Mormon religion have caused many of its members to be persecuted by outside parties. During the last half of the nineteenth-century the government formed strict laws to thwart the strong beliefs of polygamy until church leaders denounced the practice. In the twentieth century the Church came under fire because of its controversial ideas considering African Americans. Ideas of Caucasian supremacy can be found throughout doctrines and scripture that exist in important Church documents. Until recently the Latter-day Saint Church had denied the priesthood, as well as several other religious practices to anyone that was of African decent. Heavy criticism from both non-Mormon and Mormon parties mounted until 1978, when then Church president Spencer Kimball announced the repeal. Several theories have been recently developed to explain the origins and reasoning of racial inferiority and the manner in which the Latter-day Saint Church treated African Americans during the last one- hundred and seventy-one years.
The Mormon population holds true to their unique religious beliefs. Most Mormons are similar to those who practice Christianity, however there are some differences. Over the past two centuries that Mormonism has been founded by Joseph Smith, this faith has expanded across the United States. Even though the faith has been powerful to many believers it is becoming less frequently practiced. This religion not only practices God and Jesus as separate people but also believes that God is seen in everyone. Since, Mormons are very religious and godlike we have to be competent to these differences when working with this population. There is very little information about how to perform Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with a child that is practicing
A characteristic not many people have is courage. Courage can be difficult to obtain or it can be easy. Acting upon fearful choices makes a person courageous. Courageous figures are the 2000 Stripling Warriors. These young men were morally straight, courageous, faithful, and brave. Anybody can be courageous through actions and morals. One of the most important attributes is courage.
Mark Allen Powell in his first chapter of Introducing the New Testament reflects on the nature of people during the times of the New Testament. This chapter opens the reader’s eyes to the numerous aspects of the New Testament narratives that deserve consideration. It goes through the major events leading up to CE (Common Era-Christian Era) which consist of four periods. Powell notes the empires that take control over the Jewish people and their land: the Persian period, the Hellenistic period, the Hasmonean period, and the Roman period (18). Then it slides into the CE addressing the people of Palestine.
My definition of religion has mostly stayed the same, but my perception of it has changed. At the beginning of the class, I assumed religion was something you believed based on your moral principles. I now believe that those moral principles are based on the religion that you believe in. Your religion changes your perception of the world and how to go about in it. Your religion tells you what is right and wrong in the world and answers all of the big questions one asks. Religion according to our book is, “A pattern of beliefs and practices that expresses and enacts what a community regards as sacred and/or ultimate about life” (Van Voorst 6). That definition was one thing that really got me thinking about my own personal idea of what religion
