The Blind Side
When you think of hero’s who are the first people you think of are? Superman? Batman? Spiderman? Those would all be the common responses. Have you ever wondered “what is a hero?” A hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities. “There are five qualities that truly heroic leaders have in common. Courage, selflessness, humility, patience, and caring” (Murphy) When I think of hero’s I think about the normal people playing there part into making this world a better place to live. I always went by the saying “not all hero’s wear capes” because when you say hero you think about the comic book hero’s and not the ones at live in your community. The Blind Side is a movie that shows how you can be a hero with

The thing about this movie is that Michael was one of his worst villains. Michael wasn’t use to people actually caring about him so he was easily discouraged. Not a lot of people liked that fact that a white woman was taking in a black boy south down at that time. The kids and even the adult would say rude remarks to Michael to make him feel bad. And Michael was a big bear therefore on the outside he appears to be this big tough guy but on the inside he was actually hurt and the things that people would say actually affected him. He was a very insure young man because he didn’t have the moral support of a family to be his backbone when things went bad. The one thing he knew how to do was give up. Therefore it made it hard for him to succeed when he was the main person bringing himself down. Sadly Michael the only wasn’t the only one who didn’t believe in him. The people that discouraged Michael wasn’t because of something that he did it was mainly because of the color of his skin. They lived down south where there are still a lot of white people that still believes in segregation. Therefore they never truly gave Michael the chance to show that he is a nice and a well-mannered young man because the only thing that they would look at was the color of his skin. Michael had to endure physical and mental abuse by his teammates and their
Although not every hero shouts “Avengers Assemble” before a worthy deed, heroism is shown in all aspects of the everyday world. Webster Dictionary has exactly 5 definitions under the word hero and still no two people explain heroism the same. Superman and Captain America are a glimpse of the fictional characters society titles a hero. Firefighters and Military portray heroism each day in the lives of every civilian. As Sullivan and Venter stated “individuals are referred to as ‘heroes’ for seemingly different reasons” and even through endless studies the adjectives referring heroes is ever changing. Among the various ideas of what it means to be a hero, boldness and valiance capture the essence of heroism.
Soon after the story begins we get an insight into who Michael truly is. One could easily describe him as a Meek young man, as the narrator states Michael is very unsure of himself while asking the townspeople questions on the subject of the whereabouts of the Hangman. Though, his insecurities do not stop him from his ability to do his job. To be a decent writer you have to be observant, which fits Michaels personality perfectly. While describing the Hangman's appearance he notices small details that most people would skim over. Describing him as “a little fellow, without
Recently, students of Olympian High School have stumbled upon the question, "What is a hero?" In the school's 2013 Young Minds Essay Contest, students are expected to consider universal concerns and ideas. Many times when people think of a hero, they think of Superman, Batman, and many other Marvel characters who display unattainable superpowers. However, heroes are prevalent throughout the world. A hero can be anyone who has the desire to help others, brave in dangerous situations, and does not look at exterior gain from helping others.
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
She taught Lori-Jean respect, love, forgiveness, gentleness and compassion. Throughout the book Lori-Jean would often reflect back on something Mee-Maw had told her. Lori Jean would then use that recollection to make her choice. Lori Jean was raised by a multitude of adults. All of the adults were oppressed, underserved and lower class. Yet, some of them had a kind of pride that shined like a golden coin. It was a kind of pride that runs deeps. A pride that is not spoken of, but instead viewed on the outside. All of the adults who helped raise her dealt with a variety of social ghosts. The lower class folk were always treated like they were less than. No matter how hard they worked. Lori Jean’s family were close and helped one another as much as
Instead of becoming like all of the rest of people he knows from where he grew up. Michael took a better path instead of taking a path that would ruin his life.
Michael went from being useless on the field when joining the team, to becoming incredibly good through his team. Before he goes to Briarcrest, Michael Oher has no family taking care of him, and he has no future. Michael needs someone: “Big Mike was going to drop out,” said Big Tony. “And if he dropped, out he’d be like all his friends who dropped out: dead, in jail, or on the street selling drugs, just waiting to be dead or in jail” (3). With no one to guide Michael, he has no future ahead of him....
Leigh Anne sees that Michael is a good kid. He is caring, respectful, and protective. He loves his mom so much even though he knows she has her problems. He will always watch over her because he cares so much about her. He is also very respectful. He never asks for more food or more clothes or more of anything for that matter. One thing that stood out to me is that at Thanksgiving when the whole family sat on the couches to watch the game and eat, Michael sat politely at the dinner table just out of respect for his family. Finally, Leigh Anne sees that Michael is protective. He will do anything to protect the people he loves. For example with SJ in the car accident. Michael protected SJ from the air bags and saved SJ’s life. Also, when Michael and Leigh Anne went into the bad part of town he told her to just stay by him and he would protect her.
In this scene there are a couple of topics covered throughout the semester thus far. First, there is the role of power in cultural discrimination. In the films setting, there are two social classes depicted: the affluent white culture, and the poor, violence ridden black culture. Throughout the film the whites purvey the dominant values and ideology. Michael is depicted as the only black football player on the team, the only black student in Wingate Christian School, and the only black person welcomed into the Touhy’s life. During this lunch scene, Leigh Anne’s friends, especially in the one woman’s “White Guilt” quip, bring these obvious discriminatory tones forthright. As examined in our society, those with higher power are more likely to stereotype. Yet another topic of discussion is that of re-fencing. It can be assumed that their whole lives, these women, Leigh Anne included, did not have many personal interactions with black people. Now that Leigh Anne has taken in a troubled black youth and began caring for him, both emotionally and financially, Michael
According to google.com a hero is someone who “is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievments, or noble equalities.” (google.com). For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. John Lee Hancock’s film, The Blind Side, is an absolutely must see. The Blind Side, is a semi biographical movie that is based on the life of a football player named Michael Oher. The film was produced in 2009 by the Warner Bros. Production Company. The movie exemplifies the works of talented actors and actresses, some of whom are familiar and others that are new to the acting world. The names of the Main characters are as follows: Sandra Bullock, who plays the role of Mrs.Tuohy, Tim McGraw, who portrays Mr.Tuohy, and new comer Quinton Aaron, who plays the lead as Michael Oher. Even though, the film seems to be over exaggerated cliché, it excels tremendously in acting, setting, and encouraging and inspirational relationships. For these reasons, I personally think that the movie is worth watching due to the fact that it teaches individuals not to judge people by their race but by their character and actions.
He is at an all-white Christian school and has no idea what is going on and feels alone, like he doesn’t belong. Another scene is when you can see Michael crying outside his mother’s door, as well as when you see him crying when he got into a car accident with S.J. That scene shows how he cared about SJ and how sorry he was to have put them both in that situation. You can especially see the love Michael had for the Tuohy’s and how much love the Tuohy’s had for Michael when they asked him if he would like to become part of their family and responded with “I kind of thought I already was”. That is because he felt
The second character I chose to focus on was Hilly Holbrook, she is a member of the high-society women in Mississippi. Mrs. Hilly is ignorant of African-American culture and it is evident throughout the movie that she could not care less to learn about them. Mrs. Hilly’s outlook on the African-American community was that they were carrying multiple diseases and they held seemingly no compatibility with the whites. This perspective was, unfortunately, a common one during the 1960s. A majority of the time this unjustifiable thought of African-Americans originated from forefathers and was passed down through
When I think of a hero I immediately think of someone who is strong, intelligent, handsome, and daring. Upon closer examination, many different qualities than these become apparent. Courage, honesty, bravery, selflessness, and the will to try are just a few of the overlooked qualities of a hero. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa.
When you here superhero you might think of Spider-Man or superman, but the common hero maybe the guy next to you in the subway or the woman working at Walmart. Heros are supposed to help and be there when they are needed, Spider-Man helps everyone that needs it. Superman flies and helps keep the city secured. This shows how heroes are and what they do.
