In our general society today, many people are very focused on themselves, how to make themselves better, what cute clothes are on sale, who won the game last night. Youth and adults today all have social media in our society, no matter what social media, everybody most likely has one form of social media that they use. Very recently, people have started using these social media platforms as ways to create awareness for certain topics that need to be discussed as a whole. Things such as Black Lives Matter, Homophobia and Mental Health are all topics that are needed to spoken about and have recently surfaced. Many celebrities and people in general know about this, but choose to ignore it and focus on unimportant things. They choose ignorance, …show more content…
This police brutality has been, very unfortunately, been focused towards the black race. This racism has made the idea of Black Lives Matter surface. Black Lives Matter is a movement that many people have been trying to promote and get people to join. On twitter and many other social media platforms, the hashtag “#blacklivesmatter” was created, to help promote the cause. Many people on social media will come out and straight up say that a hashtag will not save lives or help anyone. Although that is true, a hashtag cannot change the entire world, it still creates awareness. This hashtag has helped people come together, created rallies, protests and has helped people fuel their anger and fear together on one platform. Also recently, many people who are not at all being affected by any oppression have created a hashtag “#alllivesmatter”. Although I agree that all lives really do matter, these people are completely missing the point of Black Lives Matter. “Let’s be clear, we said: Black Lives Matter. We never said only Black Lives Matter. That was the media, not us. In truth, we know that All Lives Matter, we’ve supported your lives throughout history. Now we need your help with Black Lives Matter. For black lives are in danger.” (Gene Testimony Hall). Many celebrities have been supporting Black Lives Matter ever since the …show more content…
So if today’s society is so accepting, why can’t everyone accept everyone for who they are? Homophobia is a large issue for as long as time can tell. Recently, this issue has started to resolve, with people starting to get comfortable with the subject and not care as much as to who other people are. Many elders and people who come from a generation of these elder still have the hate for the LGBTQ+ community. Many very religious people still argue that it is a sin to even accept those people, and that they would burn in hell. There’s also the younger generation, all with smartphones and social media platforms who are very homophobic and like to state it through their social media. Often you can see a teenage boy getting mad about two men kissing in a picture. That’s ridiculous, how could you possibly care about who another person loves? Morgan Freeman once tweeted, “I hate the word homophobia. It’s not a phobia. You’re not scared. You’re an asshole.” Homophobia, transphobia, biphobia have also all been disregarded on social media due to the fact that people believing that awareness is not something needed, so the topic gets ignored completely. Many celebrities do support this community and are all about sending love, so they could easily use their huge social media platform to help raise awareness. Social media has already done so much for this community, such as Pride Parades, rallies of sorts,
The issues of how technology is influencing our nation today has come into play with social media and surveillance in our personal lives. We use twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. to express our opinions on things and as a voice to inform people on what’s going on in today’s society. We have learned how to use the tools we’ve been given to change our lives forever; our government has access to all of our personal information in exchange for our protection against terrorism. In Bijan Stephen’s article on “Black Lives Matter” and Rebecca McKinnon’s chapter on “the Arab Spring”, they both touch on the power of technology in negative and positive ways.
Police brutality has been an apparent mark on the struggles, trials, and tribulations of people of minorities for years, primarily Black people. From the times of slavery to the present unlawful targeting and murders of black citizens with no justification, police brutality has been an enema in Black American culture for hundreds of years. Seen both in James Baldwin’s “Going to Meet the Man” and in the current happenings of the United States. The hashtag “#BlackLivesMatter” has been a focal point in the current struggle for equality of the races. The current outpouring of support for black lives and
Two exceptions to the class avoidance phenomenon: discussion about the middle class as acceptable and presenting glimpses of the poor and wealthy that conform to common stereotypes. Americans are misinformed to believe the following myths: class distinctions are non-existent, middle-class is the norm, everyone is getting richer, and the chances of success are equal for everyone. The U.S. has the highest income gap between the wealthiest and poorest in the industrial world, which is approximately 12 to 1. In 2004, the affluent experienced a wage increase by 12%, whereas the 99% of average income makers saw an increase of 1%. The Making of the Ghetto: One of the biggest forms of equity is home ownership, and between 1933 and 1978, the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) supported millions of Americans by providing small down payments and reasonable payment plans, if they fell within their requirements.
Police brutality has been a significant issue for many years.. The people affected by this most of all, are people of color. They are subject to racial inequality by the police and the justice system every day. They are being killed everyday simply for existing. The excessive force used by the police specifically towards African Americans is continuous; with the justice system doing close to nothing to change that. This is one of the reasons they continue to kill and harass African Americans. According to Propublica, young black males are about twenty times more likely to be shot and killed by the police than their white peers are. Murderers are walking free, and innocent lives are being taken. Over the past couple of years, thousands of people have been killed on the hands of the police, both black and white.
Black lives matter is a social media movement that went of the Ferguson, Gardner cases etc. Also very rapidly it was to show as a opposition to the police and cops. Somehow when saying black lives matter it was like saying all life matter don’t matter. It’s a touchy subject due to why people view things and for most case I can understand. I feel that the person that made black life’s matter didn’t mean for it to be just all about black life but to inform others around the nation that there is a special problem that is only happening in the African American community and we have fix that issue . we as a society has to recognize this that the African American are not making this up this its not something being politicalized its real and there’s a history behind it so we have to seriously.
For the past 400 year African Americans have suffered severe forms of oppression, hatred and racism. Even though America has made great strides to eliminate the practice of hatful ideologies and discrimination the residue of inhuman treatment still resides in our society. Racial violence and institutional racism is still in full effect and receiving media coverage like never before. Controversy has arisen due to lives of many African Americans being taken by law enforcement. The African American community has been in an uproar as they feel injustice has occurred being that many of those law enforcement officers have been acquitted of all charges. Birthed from this pain was a chapter-based national organization
There are people in America that makes us wonder why there is a world to begin with. There are people who represent the greater good of the world, and there are others who are unfortunately not for the greater good of the world. We have to constantly deal with those whose only goal in life is to bring the lives of others down to the ground; to shatter and to break them. This is what is happening now in the world, and this most likely will never change. As a result of trying to change the ways in which we live and interact with these people, there was a movement that wanted to change the lives of African-Americans, as well as other races. This movement was called “Black Lives Matter”. The people who were responsible for the creation of
A number of African American people have been murdered by members of the police force and there still has yet to be any justice for them. The fact that members of a force that are meant to protect us, are actually killing many, brings on a feeling of uneasiness and distrust. They’re targeting innocent members of society for no other reason than their skin color. And justice hasn’t been accomplished in honor of all the people that were murdered. This proves just how unjust the criminal system is and how much work needs to be done to bring justice and equality for every gender, race,
The first amendment proposed by Thomas Jefferson became effective on Dec 15, 1791. It gives right to free speech, religion, press and petition. The freedom of speech gives citizens the right to speak their mind and is one of the most important freedoms granted to U.S. citizens. The Constitution is color blind. Skin color does not make any difference; it is racism which lies in the eyes of the beholder. Too often people empower an ordinary citizen to forget that people are to be treated alike. Lately there has been criticism over people who are exercising their rights to speak freely, more specifically, people who are part of the movement, Black LivesMatter. This movement has every right to express their feelings. The ways they are protesting
These situations shined a light on some of the underlying racism problems that still show up in today’s day and age. These events call for people to educate themselves about what is actually going on in police stations, court case sand places of authority. I experienced the effects one of these events first hand during the Freddie Gray riots in Baltimore. I live near the area the riots took place and I visualized much of the destruction the riots caused to the city. I also heard of the schooling districts discussing whether or not to close school, based on the events. This caused me to do more research on why this actually happened and who Freddie Gray was. The black lives matter movement is a beast of its own, considering the controversy that is has brought about, but it is also beautiful because it started a revolution of properly going about dealing with racial problems in today’s
How could you say All Lives Matter when you don 't treat everyone the same. Black Lives Matter isn 't just about police brutality. Its also about the deaths of black people being killed by (the people that are supposed to be protecting us) police officers, and small issues of racial profiling, and racial inequality in the United States criminal justice system. This movement has also been negative because people are looking at it like after all i 've done nothing is being done about it. Black Lives Matter is seen as positive to the black communities because it shows that someone cares about these young innocent men dieing. Society should support this movement because young black lives are being lost people are losing their fathers, grandsons, brothers, uncles. This paper will focus on Black Lives Matter vs. All Lives
Black Lives Matter is not a bandwagon to hop on, nor is it a hashtag or a slogan. Black Lives Matter is a movement. To not support the movement or to think that the movement does not need support is outright depraved, demeaning and degrading. We too often think that retweeting, tweeting or sharing a photo on social media is supporting the movement and it’s not! This is no longer the 1960’s. We have gained our rights: that is no longer the fight. The fight is receiving justice for our black people, so no effective protesting is no longer sitting at countertops, it is no longer peaceful marching and it is no longer bus boycotting The new protest is to educate ourselves, to show respect, to get involved in the justice system, to raise black lawyers, to vote and to do jury duty. All of these things are needed to benefit the movement in stopping the corruptness in our justice system.
In multiple different occurrences the protests have angered others more than just gain awareness. Sadly a large number of people are more upset with the stop of traffic and other inconveniences caused by the protests, rather than the deaths of unarmed black men and women. The protest are doing their job to gain attention, but in the eyes of some they are doing it in the wrong way. One big rally cry the movement has had is “hands up, don’t shoot” which came after the shooting of Mike Brown in Ferguson Missouri. It was said that before he was killed he stated “my hands are up, don’t shoot me” which we find out afterward is not true. Anyways hands up don’t shoot, spread like wildfire and grabbed everyone’s attention. It was placed on the big stage, including sporting events, and areas of high traffic. Many common people support Black Lives Matter, but there may be some flaws in it as well. Clearly the main idea of the movement is good, and black lives really do matter. However would it not be safe to say that all lives matter rather than just black ones? It is true there have been many cases against African Americans and they may be targeted more often than other races. From another point of view, there would be riots in the
Black Lives Matter is not a movement that believes all lives do not matter; nevertheless, it highlights the fact that black lives are taken for granted by the judicial system. Protests around the world have taken place to fight for justice in the black community. The immense number of deaths of unarmed black men and women is a clear sign that they are more likely to be killed by police than white people. Physical violence and excessive use of force by the U.S. police towards African Americans are seen in the news regularly.
Freedom and equality, that is what the Black Lives Matter movement stands for. It is what it
