“The Bite of the Mango” is the powerful, excruciatingly detailed autobiography of Mariatu Kamara and how she triumphed over her past traumas and the atrocities of war. The book was written in collaboration by Susan McClelland, a prominent freelance journalist based in Toronto, and Mariatu is a survivor of the perilous Sierra Leone Civil War, which ravaged the country from 1991 to 2001. During the war, Mariatu would be brutally maimed and left with no hands. Needless to say, I find myself utterly sympathetic towards Mariatu; the naive and childlike manner of speech in the book only further tugs at my heartstrings. “I will meet the president tomorrow”. I will speak for all people of Sierra Leone who are not being heard.” (Kamara, 211). Some may be too disturbed by the events in the book to ever give it a chance, but I think that’s the point. For example, Mariatu’s rape scene expertly instills discomfort, disturbance, and hatred towards Salieu in the reader. People in third-world countries such as Canada and the U.S.A. are often shielded from the harsher truths of life; nevertheless, it’s important to be aware that these horrors are occurring so we can properly confront and oppose them. While the overall narrative is solid, there are some aspects that could be further refined or put less emphasis on. At times, life can be bold and exciting or dull and boring; the same goes for this novel. Personally, while most chapters still provided adequate entertainment, some chapters were rather stale and felt like a chore to read. Specifically, chapters 15 and 16 both involved forgettable characters, and nothing interesting happened other than Mariatu visiting her family in Sierra Leone before relocating to Canada. I feel that combining 15 and 16 would have been a great improvement and would leave room to write more interesting
