For many years, I have had this ideology that all the information inscribed in the Bible is factual. It was thought provoking to see that the Bible is composed of historically accurate information and stories. The Introduction to the Bible course has given me the opportunity to explore and broaden my perspective on the Catholic bible. I am challenging myself to see the bible from a historical and scientific view, but also with a view of my faith. The information that I have gathered from the course has caused me to question faith and facts. From the first day of the course, my attention was grabbed. The lesson from my first class dealt with the significance of biblical numbers and how they are symbolic. They are seldom used for counting. …show more content…
When I read the bible, I would simply breeze by these numbers and see no importance in them. After hearing the lecture on creation, the questioning and skepticism began. Like a majority of Catholics, we have been taught that the book of Genesis describes creation. For many years, I was the same until I enrolled into the Introduction to Bible Course. After carefully reading the text, we observed that Genesis is a story. We were able to make such a decision by the way it is being told. I learned that the book of Genesis is a mythological analogy and the myths that capture a larger truth. It is a story that had no evidence to support the claim, unlike the theory formulated by scientists known as Evolution and the Big Bang theory which occurred because explosion of compressed matter and energy. Remains of the earliest humans have been discovered which date back to thousands of years ago known as Homo …show more content…
It was arduous to accept that Adam and Eve never existed; there was no apple, no snake and no temptation. How is it even possible for a snake to speak? I learned that when studying the bible, one must be skeptical and be analytical. Before the accounts of creation, there was the Enuma Elish. This story is a Babylonian mythical interpretation of creation. This story deals with Marduk, leader of the good Gods and Goddesses, and Tiamant, leaders of the forces of evil, and this great battle. There was a great battle where the good Gods was victorious, but the evil force was still present in the creation. The Enuma Elish was an important account because it led to the Hebrews writing their story of creation. The story of the Enuma Elish is fiction, but it is interesting to learn about creation through another culture’s point of view. While Catholicism has ten acts of creation, the Hebrew has six days of creation. Up until this point, the only accounts of creation I was aware of were through Evolution and the book of
William C. Plachers’ article, “Is the Bible True?” explores deeper into the subject of the Bible and if it content it contains is credible information. Through Plachers’ statement, “We need to understand the genre to understand a text. Reading a text literally is not always reading it faithfully,” we are able to reach the idea that the Bible is in fact true, but it all depends on how the individual interprets the text.
People have been trying to explain the existence of humans and the origins of our world since ancient times. There are many different theories and myths that attempt to describe the earliest beginnings of our present world. In the Ancient Near East one of the most popular creation myths was the Babylonian creation myth also known as Enuma Elish. Hebrew nomads like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and David lived in tents while traveling to different locations in search of water and pastures for their livestock. Nomads were constantly moving and searching for other places which would have allowed them to hear many different creation myths throughout the Ancient Near East. These nomads would have been surprised by the first chapter of Genesis because it was extremely different than any other creation story they had ever heard of, especially from the Babylonian epic of Enuma Elish. The way Genesis is written would be very attractive and inviting to the Hebrew nomads because it was more realistic and gave human life value more than any other creation myth they would have heard at that time.
Writings of historical scholars, Josephus, Aristotle, and Plato, to name a few, are taken as truth and fact, yet the writings of the Scripture are constantly disputed. Why? Perhaps because of the ethical imperatives imposed to which people do not want to adhere. Perhaps because of man’s ego and pride that disallows them to submit to a Higher Authority. Nonetheless, The Bible has been, and still remains, the most widely read and revered book of all
Many scholars, once the Enuma Elish was discovered, began to perceive Genesis as simply “another creation story.” Study of the Enuma Elish finds many similarities throughout both itself and the Bible. The Enuma Elish begins “when on high” whereas Genesis begins “in the beginning,” both show strong connection by the bestowing of names to show importance, both have a darkness and emptiness perceived as a chaos before both stories, water is divided into upper and lower bodies, The Enuma Elish is written on seven tablets and Genesis takes place over seven days, and finally both works detail how man is created on the sixth installment. While the similarities are numerous it must be taken into account that God from Genesis is the sole higher power and comes with terms of peace and composure whereas, the Enuma Elish is based upon many Gods and maintain the world with war and violence. When considering how early man may have conveyed early Christianity it seems as a simpler and more enjoyable way to live life. From looking at these similarities one can conclude how the Bible, with a more approachable method to living well, became the more popular of the two resulting in its long stance as one of the world’s most popular systems for living ethically. (King;
Genesis chapter 1-3 shows just how awesome God was in his creation. These chapters sum up the seven days of creation as well as sin and evil. No one but God can speak and everything on earth comes into existence (universe, heaven, seas, water, dry land, the sun, the moon and creatures). The Bible should be read on a literal perspective than on a figurative perspective. When we do this, no one will have to debate on whether or not what we read is true or fictional. religious truth derived from Catholic traditions as well as from the Bible” (Davies 497). Although the
Over the course of history many different people and cultures have tried to explain human existence. Many forms of arts have been used to express these theories and myths but nothing more popular than literature. Two of the most popular stories of creation include the biblical tale of Genesis and the Babylonian epic, Enuma Elish. Many historians have debated over which of the two stories was derived from the other. While both stories are different and depict different ideals of how the universe came to be they due hold striking similarities.
Since the beginning of time, societies have created stories to explain the mystery of the origin of man and the universe. In the Babylonian text, Enuma Elish and the book of Genesis-which originated in the same part of the world-one finds two very different stories about the creation of man. These two creation stories contrast the two societies that created them: the chaotic lives of servitude of the Babylonians and the lives of the recently freed Jewish people.
In this paper I will discuss three similarities and four differences between Enuma Elish-The Epic of Creation (King,1902) and Genesis 1:1-3:24 as described by Michael Fishbane (Fishbane, 1979). These writings are selected to describe the story of creation of the earth and the inhabitants of the earth. However, each author has a very different view and way of explaining what they have interpreted the sacred texts to mean.
...rect influence on Greek creation mythology. But the truth is that the tables date back to 1100 BC, which means the Babylonian creation myth is much older then Greek mythology’s Theogony by Hesiod. The Enuma Elish might even contain stories that much other then itself, some scholars argue. In conclusion it is obvious that there are many parallels between the Enuma Elish and the Theogony. No matter the creation myth there will most always be unexplainable similarities that cannot be explained. Comparing and contracting different creation myths is a very good way to help explain different cultures and their differences and similarities. It also opens the door to more questions that seek answers only found by looking in the past and how can any culture hope to have a rich and valuable future without being aware of it’s past; this is why creations myths are so valuable.
The word “genesis”, in the original Hebrew, means “in the beginning”; the book of Genesis tells the account of how all of earth, humanity, celestial bodies, and life came to be. It is more than just a historical document about the origins of life itself; it is a book that establishes the foundation of the Christian faith, and it affects the worldviews that are held by the believers in faith. When analyzing Genesis, it is arguable that chapters one through eleven are very crucial in shaping the way Christians view the natural world, human identity, human relationships, and civilization.
Every Christians today knows the story of Jesus birth. The story of how Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem for a censes declared by the Roman Empire. While not being able to find an inn to stay in and Mary getting ready to give birth, they stow away in the cave where the animals were kept. While there Mary gave birth to a son and called him Jesus. While Jesus was in a manger a heavenly host of angles came down and also Shepard’s from the field came and rejoiced the savior was born. This is where the typical nativity scene comes from. Unless you have a Doctorate and teach a History of the New testament class and go into fine detail about the story, then story this is what people hear. Well this is for History of the New Testament so the fine details are what we are looking for. Most people do not realize that the story they tell every Christmas is actually a combination of two stories. The birth story is told in the Gospels of Luke and the Gospels of Mathew but each tell a very different version of what actually happened and that is what leads to people questioning the accuracy of the bible today.
The contents of the Bible have dealt with controversy in regards to its inerrancy since publication, and will surely continue to. Historians progress to learn more about biblical stories in order to provide evidence for the reliability of information. Many believers today understand that not everything in the Bible has been factually proven. An outstanding topic many scholars pay attention to lies within the four gospels. The three synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, replay essentially the same story with minor inconsistencies, while John portrays Jesus in an entirely different way. The differences in each gospel are due to how each gospel entertains different portrayals of the life and understanding of Jesus himself, in order to persuade
For centuries now Christians have claimed to possess the special revelation of an omnipotent, loving Deity who is sovereign over all of His creation. This special revelation is in written form and is what has come to be known as The Bible which consists of two books. The first book is the Hebrew Scriptures, written by prophets in a time that was before Christ, and the second book is the New Testament, which was written by Apostles and disciples of the risen Lord after His ascension. It is well documented that Christians in the context of the early first century were used to viewing a set of writings as being not only authoritative, but divinely inspired. The fact that there were certain books out in the public that were written by followers of Jesus and recognized as being just as authoritative as the Hebrew Scriptures was never under debate. The disagreement between some groups of Christians and Gnostics centered on which exact group of books were divinely inspired and which were not. The debate also took place over the way we can know for sure what God would have us include in a book of divinely inspired writings. This ultimately led to the formation of the Biblical canon in the next centuries. Some may ask, “Isn’t Jesus really the only thing that we can and should call God’s Word?” and “Isn’t the Bible just a man made collection of writings all centered on the same thing, Jesus Christ?” This paper summarizes some of the evidences for the Old and New Testament canon’s accuracy in choosing God breathed, authoritative writings and then reflects on the wide ranging
The biblical narrative is one that is still going on to this day. The biblical narrative tells the story of God and how he reveals himself to us. Rhodes points out that “God comes to each through a historical event or series of events” (2). It is in this way that God reveals himself to us and this maintains the relevance of the biblical narrative in our lives. God reveals himself through formative stories in the bible such as Creation, Adam and Eve, the Fall of Man, The Flood, God’s Covenant with Noah, and the Tower of Babel. From the very beginning of the biblical narrative we see that God relates to us on a personal level. He created us, he formed us, he created the world in which we live, and he has been an active participant in the narrative since before it began.
