In 2010, 860 people were murdered by firearms in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Gun violence is a violence committed with the use of a firearm. Criminal gun violence includes; murder, assault with a deadly weapon, suicide, or attempted suicide. Main reasons why people buy guns are because of self defense, hunting, target shooting, and just for fun. In the New York Metropolitan area mainly people want guns for self defense. Due to strict laws, the New York Metropolitan Area has some of the lowest gun violence in the entire United States of America. New York has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation. No permit is required for the purchase of a rifle or shotgun in New York State except in New York City. A license to posses a pistol or revolver is required to purchase a handgun. Outside New York City, a person licensed to posses a pistol or revolver may apply at any time to the licensing officer in the county of their residence for amendment of his or her license to include one or more such handguns or to remove a gun held under the license. No person engaged in the selling of firearms may transfer such gun to another unless the transferee is provided with a gun locking device and a label. Any manufacturer that delivers a handgun to any person in this state shall include in the container that encloses; a shell casing of bullet or projectile discharged from such handgun, and additional information for such handgun. There is no state license requirement for the possession of a rifle or shotgun, as long as the barrel is at least sixteen inches in length and the shotgun barrels is at least eighteen inches. Since numerous states allowed strong new laws in 2013, some states received a higher grade than in past rankings such as Connecticut after the Newton incident. In the newest Brady Campaign ratings, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut scored an A-, the highest and best score, and also made the top ten in lowest gun death rate out of all states.
