The Benefits of Quality Function Deployment
· Explain the benefits, which you think that quality function
deployment can bring to a design team when designing and putting into
production, a new product.
Quality function deployments or (Q,F,D's) main aim is to clarify the
requirements of any project or product that is to be undertaken.
Therefore to present the project in a just manner, allowing consumers
to see measurable factors in the project or product.
As a product designer quality function deployment has a number of
benefits. When quality function deployment is used it would allow the
product designer to set himself some clear goals through an action
plan. Obviously as a product designer it is the consumer that is the
important factor in the design of the product. You may have an age
range and gender to design for, but with Q,D,F you relate you action
plan and goals around the consumer and what their requirements are. If
this can be achieved it is more than likely that you will design a
product that will match up to the consumers needs first time round
thus reducing time and minimising costs. If this is not the case than
modifications or changes to designs are made in the early stages when
Q,D,F is undertaken still keeping costs down. Because time is reduced
its not just minimising costs, but would imply that a designer would
be more likely to hit there deadline more comfortably.
Q,D,F can also bring cheaper tooling as mistakes are kept to a
minimum. Keeping costs at a down will have a knock on affect on the
product when it's to be sold to the consumer. The design of a product
costs money so is classed as an overhead. The company selling the
product will want to recuperate the money lost on its overheads, which
is taken into account when deciding the cost of a product. If the
overheads are lower as a result of Q,D,F then in turn the price put on
the product will be lower making it more attractive to consumers and
EITF, 86-13 Discussion ?? option 28 requires inventory be written to lower of cost or market unless (1) substantial evidence exists that market prices will recover before the inventory is sold?Write down is generally required unless the decline is due to seasonal pricing fluctuation.?
Overhead based on units sold includes only sales and marketing. Sales and marketing will be targeted mostly towards the products that are already on the market, and so units sold is the best way to associate the cost with each product. (Figure A)
In the John Deere case, they were calling a lot of things overhead that weren't truly overhead (e.g. scrap, which is probably proportional to the amount produced). We discussed with my group how the internal transfer pricing arrangement probably encouraged the managers to think this way, since it awarded contracts on the basis of direct costs but, by the books, the actual transfer price was supposed to be the full price. In summary, the John Deere case was an exercise in thinking about how not to make pricing decisions.
The presentation of the material is in dollars only. Overhead is applied to products as a percent of direct labor dollar cost. Factory profit for each year is found by subtracting direct material, direct labor, and direct overhead costs from total sales. The overhead percentage is calculated at the same time budgeting and is applied as a single overhead pool throughout each model year. The consulting company used 435% of direct labor costs in 1987 for their study; the budgeted was actually 437% (OH/DL=107,954/24,682). A similar percentage applies in the following year (109890/25294=434.5%). However in the next two years, after the outsourcing of oil pans and mufflers was enacted, the allocation of overhead in...
risk. So, to offset the risk they raise the premium. Which means it is more
In her 2002 book, “Interpreting Gender and Sexuality: Approaches from Cultural Anthropology,” Alma Gottlieb gave insight into the roles of gender and sexuality in different cultures and how these roles have developed over time. Her book contrast gender stereotypes and how they are changing in Western nations like America, but are stationary in places like Afganistan. She dabbles on the topics of religious and cultural beliefs, and how these functions reflect societal opinions about masculinity and femininity. Her writings attempt explaining why gender power struggles occur, how these ideas were founded, and how people are either moving away from them or accepting them.
Quality is an important part of any business rather from a customer’s perspective or a producer’s perspective. Quality from a customer’s perspective is they “want value and quality has become a major factor in the value of products and service” (Russell & Taylor, 2013, pg. 53). “The customer is the most important part of the production line” (Russell & Taylor, 2013, pg. 53). This can be referred to as quality of design meaning “involves designing quality characteristics into a product or service” (Russell & Taylor, 2013, pg. 54). Now let’s look at the quality from a producer’s perspective. This can be referred to a quality of conformance meaning “making sure the product or service is produced according to design” (Russell & Taylor, 2013,

Zatzick, Moliterno, and Fang (2012) write that Total Quality Management “TQM primarily focuses on increasing inefficiencies and improving processes, particularly when implemented in manufacturing organizations” (p.1322). Deming (1988) writes that American companies do not work steadily towards process improvement. He feels that management should be consistent with its efforts to improve upon the quality of its products. Beer (2003) views TQM as an ongoing process in order to ensure product excellence. TQM has the ability to change the companies’ culture and work processes. Quality management is a long term process. These changes usually require new initiatives. Deming (1998) explains how the Japanese are at an advantage because they are not beholden to stakeholders. Japanese companies are able to concentrate on their employees. This type of environment encourages trust between workers and management. Beer (2003) feels that TQM involves “multiple stakeholder philosophy that equally values community, customers, and employees (p.624). Team work and collaboration are a big part of the TQM philosophy.
...ventory and operational expenses decrease. Once the constraint is determined, the five-step process is followed to find out how to fix or correct the restraint.
Treating overhead costs as "fixed" can cause an unfair and highly misleading distribution of overhead costs which are in fact variable.
This essay describes the issues in connection to software quality, to uncover the main reasons of data and information which needs quality, and to propose the suitable plan to address the issues. Absence of techniques and management of systems and software inside the hospital surroundings brings about low quality of administration and makes the objective of patient wellbeing more troublesome. Through my reading of the research papers I have recognized software process requirements for a hospital quality plan and I have proposed a few rules dependent upon existing health care standards, quality.
Maintenance and promotion of quality improvement initiatives are essential for the successful growth and development of the health care industry. Nurses are key to all quality improvement initiatives as they are in the frontlines and have the most contact with the healthcare consumers. Therefore, nursing professionals are good at putting in their valuable inputs for quality improvement efforts. On a daily basis nursing professionals strive to deliver safe, efficient, effective, patient-centered care in a timely manner. With the growth and development in the health care industry, there is an increased need to provide competent and high quality services. Nurses are equipped with distinctive proficiency required for delivery of patient care
For this week’s written assignment, I will be discussing my organization’s quality program goals and objectives. I will discuss the quality management structure within my organization. I will also explain how quality improvement projects are selected, managed, and monitored, as well as if the nursing staff have any input. I will identify quality improvement inservice programs that are available for staff within my facility and describe an overview of these programs. I will explain what quality methodology and quality tools techniques are utilized and if they are effective or not. I will also explain how quality improvement activities and processes are communicated to the staff and if the communication is effective, as well as if it could be improved upon. I will describe how my organization evaluates quality improvement activities for effectiveness and what the process is when the quality improvement activity is not effective. I will provide two examples of a quality improvement initiative that have been effective in my organization and the quality improvement process that occurred. I will also identify the impact this has on patient outcomes and if it resulted in a change in practice. After discussing these issues, I will end this discussion with a conclusion.
This shifts the supply curve to the right, lowering price. The firms making losses leave the market, which shifts the curve to the left and raises price. Allowing the rest of the firms to earn normal profits, as shown in Figure 1&2.
