This article discusses the use of the Internet in the classroom and how it can be used to personalize education. The effectiveness of the Internet in the classroom is evaluated at the Henry Hudson Regional School in Highlands, New Jersey. A faculty member at the school explains that the Internet was introduced to their classrooms to expand limited electives, advanced placement, and foreign language offerings. The use of the Internet allows small schools to provide an education that would not be economically possible without it.
First, through the fact that it transforms our intellect to be horizontal to the detriment of deeper understanding. Since a limitless library of resources is open to us always, we tend to skim through information, not taking the time to think and discuss the information inwardly for it to truly enhance our knowledge. The internet is also affect our communication the same way as our intellect, by making it lateral and only offering snippets of contact through texting apps and social medias. This prevents us from learning about and from each other through deep connections. Furthermore, the web also impacts our memory as we take for granted the easy access to information, making search engines our personal transactive memories. This as the indirect effect of inflating our self-estimate of knowledge, although the information is not physically in stored in our brain. Lastly, the internet through social medias and applications pushes towards more insubstantial multitasking which affect our brain’s capacity to think and study properly, ultimately affecting our academic performance. These impacts of the internet can be seen in my personal life through self-reflection. As I spend more and more time on my phone reading multiple web articles, I do not take the time to truly read a book anymore. Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
The Internet has created a generation of the most efficient multi-taskers ever born. Many people will have at least four tabs open as a time (Google, Facebook, Youtube, Pandora, Wikipedia, Gmail, etc.). People are constantly jumping from one web page to the next, clicking on links and opening new tabs and browsers. The method through which knowledge is gained has transitioned from deep reading to fast skimming. Every time a web page is opened the viewer is bombarded with information, almost every page has advertisements or links to additional information lining its sides. The Internet has made mountains of information available to almost anyone. It is fast and easy to find information and facts. Essentially the Internet has become the fast food of knowledge. It is convenient but it skips the element of effort.
I want my students to have the full benefits of me as a teacher and I believe learning about different educational theories will help me be a better teacher. In particular from this article I will take away that teachers are needed to help rear students to the right information and help them focus on what information is reliable. I also will take in consideration my own techniques as a student. I am guilty of multitasking during assignments and even “googlification”. I think the internet has benefited my generation in many ways but has also done a disservice on real research. I hope as a future teacher to really teach my students to research and find valid, reliable, and understanding information of the internet. A teacher in this new generation must adapt to the technology available to students and realize they will be using these resources. I hope to find a balance in my classroom between technology, self-educating, and learning
The internet [provides an immense panoply of resources to help students with schoolwork. It gives children access to nearly anything imaginable, and with it they can improve themselves and in turn their assignments (source E). This access too should be monitored at school. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the grand scope of erudition to be gained from the internet. Information is just a click away, and can be shared in seconds, providing both students and teachers with access to anything necessary, so long as distraction doesn’t occur.
