What was your style of learning when you were in grade school? Was your brain linguistic? Mathematical? Imagine a time when you read a textbook and couldn’t retain information or muscle through the reading. Now imagine going back to your childhood with today’s technology where many K – 12 schools are migrating towards using tablets in the classroom rather than textbooks. Some folks argue that too much screen time isn’t good for children, but what about the benefits of using tablets in the classroom for learning? Tablets are a better classroom resource than textbooks because they provide quick access to a wealth of information, they also provide resource attainment for all levels and styles of learning, and they allow students to gain real world …show more content…
It makes sense in a world where we have so many resources at our fingertips to utilize tablets in the classroom. One of children’s primary responsibilities growing up is to attend school and learn content to progress academically. Tablets can assist students in obtaining and learning information quicker, The Federal Communications Commission notes, “Technology-based instruction can reduce the time students take to reach a learning objective by 30-80%, according to the US Department of Education and studies by the National Training and Simulation Association. (Digital Textbook Playbook, 2012)” Relevant information is also pertinent, with technology based learning students can have updated information with quick automatic updates. New versions of texts are often immerging, leaving students with outdated materials. Students will have access to the most up to date materials and schools will not have to purchase and replace physical copies or updated software (Oblinger and Oblinger, …show more content…
On the forefront, some folks feel tablet utilization is less cost savvy than using textbooks for class resources. Costs for tablets include the device itself, wireless internet access, and resources such as electronic textbooks also known as e-textbooks. Though initial startup costs for tablets in the class room are high, e-textbooks cost about 50-60 percent less than print textbooks (Adams, 2004). Another element folks regard as concerning are the distractions associated with tablets in considering the wide variety of resources students will have at their fingertips. Will children be attempting to play games, chat via instant messengers or browse non-course related websites? The answer is no as schools work diligently to ensure students are browsing and working electronically via secured networks with strict permissions and monitoring to certify students are focusing on their studies. With regard to learning styles and pace, folks feel concern that retention is missing from tablet based learning. Some children are not yet familiar with reading content electronically, the limited group that is working towards a new style of reading can temporarily print content and read hard copies until their able to adapt to electronic reading. The final argument folks may have is that is that tablets may be difficult for the less tech-savvy student to

Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
Has your school ever considered switching from old textbooks to brand new tablets? They greatly improve schools and save them money. “Tablets can hold hundreds of textbooks on one device, plus homework, quizzes, and other files, eliminating the need for physical storage of books and classroom materials. The average tablet contains anywhere from 8 to 64 gigabytes (GB) of storage space. On the Amazon Kindle Fire, for instance, 1,000 books take up one GB of space.” Said Emily Price in her article called How Much Storage Does Your Tablet Need? Even though they can glitch and break, schools should switch from textbooks to tablets because it will help kids learn and it is cheaper to buy one tablet opposed to a few textbooks. Tablets are a better alternative. They save schools costs for supplies, like pencils, paper, scissors, and other basic supplies. A tablet costs about $300, but a textbook costs about $75, however tablets are able to store thousands of textbooks in one device, saving schools the cost of many textbooks. On average E-textbooks cost 50-60% les...
Picture this image: headaches and dry eye from computer vision syndrome. Having a better chance of getting neck aches, shoulder pain, and musculoskeletal disorder. Is this what B-schools will upgraded from old-fashioned textbooks two tablets want their students to stop her from? I hope not! Unfortunately though, this is what their innovation has resulted in--a variety of health problems, according to the information from Procon.org and the American Optometric Association. It has been proven that the student to converted to tablets not lonely and up suffering from a variety of health problems, but become distracted from academics as well textbook should not be replaced with tablet if it is resulting in health issues, distracting students from class interaction, and even causing damage environmentally.
However, I do know the pros and cons of using technology in the classroom. Some of the pros are, students are able to complete tests and assessments online and that makes it easier for teachers to keep students’ progress up to date. You as the teacher, are allowed to use countless resources and students can also find appropriate resources to supplement the lesson. One widely known con of having technology in the classroom is that it is a major distraction to students during the lesson, some students can 't pay attention to a lesson while having an IPad in their hand, or on the computer. Another con to having technology in the classroom is there is no real way to monitor whether students are focusing on their work or are
Once electronics come into the world, students are unable to concentrate on learning and will not have enough practice in what their teachers are teaching them. Tablets can be a distraction and can also cause students to not do their schoolwork and can easily get out of it. Tablets can affect students during school and what they want to learn. According to decodedscience.com, Students may pay attention to apps, email, games, and websites instead of their teachers. 87% of K-12 teachers believe that "today’s digital technologies are creating an easily distracted generation with short attention spans. Many students in class may use the tablets as an advantage of doing whatever they want, and can also distract many students from their priority and work that they have to do. It states in procon.org that students have new available excuses, including: "the tablet broke/froze," "I forgot the tablet at home so I can't do schoolwork today," and "I couldn't find my charger." These excuses can cause trouble and will be harder from teachers to teach students when they never did their schoolwork, so the students didn’t get to practice on their own. When tablets overrule textbooks there is no telling what will happen to students while in school. Tablets will create threat to students when they replace it with textbooks. Knowing that there can be unsatisfactory once you hit the digital world and see the unknown secrets of one device that can show you everything. When you have a textbook in front of you, you don’t need to worry about any unsafe items that might pop up. Tablets are different on the other hand, so it’s safe for you to just stick to
Tablets may be more captivating to minors, but it has no other benefits that can not be resolved with textbooks. Textbooks have a plentiful amount of advantages both academically and in health. Learning and schoolwork can already be extremely stressful and difficult for most students. They do not need added tension due to not having internet access, the system shutting down, or a glitch. Changing schools to tablets could change students, teachers, and parents lives for the worst if we do not continue to keep textbooks in
Tablets and laptops are books that allows educator to teach tomorrow lesson today, while captivating its audiences in the world of education. These devices are versatile
Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system. Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.
Using tablets, as the primary learning device, for students in schools, is dangerous to one's health and altogether a bad idea. Although the intentions of using technology frequently in schools are good, studies show that too much screen time could lead to brain restructuring, metabolic syndrome, eye-straining, emotional problems, and the most surprising, an early death. Excessive use of technology can also shut a person out from the real world. A few reasons why people long for more technology in classrooms, is because a child can learn more in a shorter amount of time, students have an increased motivation to learn, and also the content is quickly updated compared to many outdated textbooks. Tablet computers should not be the primary way students learn because in the current world we live in today,
What is so special about using these fancy gadgets that makes them more beneficial or different than using hand-held textbooks? Discussions have begun to develop, and the controversy over this topic continues to increase. Although there are many benefits to using online books in schools, textbooks should not be replaced by tablets or any other electronic devices in the classroom. It is true that the majority of textbooks are not up to date with modern information and can therefore be seen as unreliable sources.
The Unified School Districts are putting educational tools on these devices for the students to learn from. These devices are showing the future generations that they can do more with technology and can improve technology. Technology is always improving and getting better every day it is also saving paper and not making students carry so many books to school and home. This can assist students and employees to research what they need to know and get more information. In Riverside California Ramona High School stated giving out tablets instead of books in 2012. This helped the students access the books that were online and the school was given Wi-Fi throughout the whole campus. By giving theses to the students and staff the District was able to see how well the students were doing in the classes and see how well the technology was working and what needed to be improved on the technology. I personally was attending Ramona High School when the technology was checked out. The technology was useful and helped the students prepare for what is coming for the future. Having this kind of technology was a great experience and made checking grades and assignments much easier to do. By using the technology it helped students learn how the technology could be used and make short cuts to get the work done faster but also done
A couple of years ago education institutions were questioning whether or not computers could be a tool for learning and whether they should embrace it or not into their schools. Nowadays the use of computers has proven to be a great tool for educating students but with the new touch screen technology coming out many institutions does not know which technology is better to be used in their schools: computers or tablets (Piggott, 2011). These new devices are less expensive and more portable, yet some critics contend they’re not useful and are best for entertainment, not learning or work (Wylie, 2013). Touch screen devices are much cheaper and affordable and since educational institutions are always dealing with funding issues they might fall as a default into picking touch screen technology versus computers for their schools (Smith, 2013). The main question becomes is this a good choice?
