Space travel has a variety of benefits that are both direct and indirect. The main goals of space travel will help us have a more in depth understanding of the universe, learn more about our own planet and potentially slow global warming by finding another habitable place or harnessing outside resources. However, there are also benefits in that the technology we develop to get to space in turn could provide more sustainable energy, better consumer products and even increased global communication. Although these may seem like great reasons to do human space missions, there are also some drawbacks. Ultimately, I believe that space endeavors are better left to robotic missions for the time being. Technology for the station helps water purification effort worldwide, ultrasound studies, improved eye surgery and hardware, controlling bone densities, using robotics to operate on inoperable tumors, and many other health related benefits. In addition, there are studies that can only be done in space such as growing high quality protein crystals. This study allows for future better pharmaceuticals and understanding of protein structure; the ideal environment for these studies is in space and could not be reproduced cheaper on earth. In this article, Lind devotes most of his time arguing of why human spaceflight should end. He provides very little evidence for any benefits of using robotic probes. He does describe a few examples of where they are going, but he doesn’t give any information on what the advantage is of using robotic probes rather than humans. Lind has a very sarcastic tone in this argument, and he doesn’t give enough credit to the astronauts. In conclusion, I believe that this article is not written well, and has minuscule evidence to why spaceflight should end, which ironically is the title of the article.
Private space travel should be encouraged. Private space exploration can lead to many positive benefits for our country. With the no longer continued support of public funding to NASA the threat of losing our space programs as a whole is in jeopardy. Putting an end to our space programs would destroy the continuation of space related research and all hopes of the United States reaching Mars. Privately funded companies would allow for continued research, hope of one day putting humans on Mars and most importantly explore many new things that were once never an option with government funded programs. The encouragement of private space travel is vital for our country.
Is it worth expanding into outer space, when we still have so many other concerns, such as power and material resources? If we focus more on aerospace development, other technological improvements may evolve, such as more energy efficient engines. Being able to send people up into space was an extraordinary influential event for mankind. It told us that there were whole new worlds and concepts out there ready to be explored. The main argument against space travel is that the money used could be better put on other matters. This is, in fact, very untrue. Looking at NASA’s 2015 budget of $17.5 billion, it may seem like a lot, until you realize that the US military budget for 2014 was $581 billion (5). Furthermore, it was estimated that each dollar in NASA’s budget was equivalent to 8 – 10 dollars of economic benefit (6). If an organization can bring about economic value at 10 folds the original budget, it would be logical to continue funding it, if not increasing the funds.
It has always been a part of human nature for a man or woman to be curious of their surroundings. First it was what is beyond those mountains; then what is beyond that ocean, then the sky, under the sea, and in the 50s, 60s, and 70s it was space and the moon. Our ancestors and the early civilizations were strongly focused on explorations and expansion. Even notable historical figures were primarily focused to either expand their empire for increased power and fame like Julius Caesar, or to explore new lands for rich booty or possible colonization like Eric the Red. We are doing nothing out of the ordinary by wanting to explore the vast expanse of space first hand. We are curious what is out there. Is there life? Is there a world out there that can sustain human life? As curious beings, we must at least try to answer these questions. If not for man taking personal initiative to answer the question left before him, we would not have a Columbus or Lewis and Clark.
