The CEO of Viacom/Blockbuster was once quoted for saying, “The information superhighway is a dirt road that won’t be paved over until 2025” (The Freeman Institute). Obviously, this was an erroneous quote. The information age is currently at its peak. The use of technology and the Internet are an essential part of higher education. In the past few years, colleges have begun providing laptops to all students. A few colleges have even developed programs that use wireless network cards to access the Internet from anywhere on their campuses. Giving students a laptop and a wireless network card has increased the learning possibilities at schools nationwide. This is a very recent idea being practiced by hundreds of colleges around the United States. However, this idea is one of controversy. Despite the many benefits, these laptops have their flaws. They create problems such as maintenance efforts, depreciation value, classroom misuse, faculty training, and raised tuition (Beebe 2-8). Another issue is whether or not the laptops actually benefit the students or just distract them.
There are many benefits of using laptops over conventional personal computers. Some of the benefits include portability, access, PowerPoint Presentations, slideshows, e-mail, using the Internet, and online notes. All of these advantages are put together to make a very economical and beneficial laptop (Shafer).
One of the biggest advantages is portability. A Minnesota State student Timothy Huebsch says, “On a nice day, we don’t have to be cooped up” (Ojeda-Zapata). One can take his or her laptop to the library, cafeteria, or even to class. The students have all the advantages of a PC without having to sit at a desk working on assignments. Students at Buena Vista University have the capability of accessing the Internet from the residence halls, football stadium, and even the docks on the lake. In other words, it is a major convenience for all the students to have a laptop to write a paper rather than waiting in a line to use a computer lab (Dean). Rick Shafer, who is Buena Vista’s Director of Integrated Technology, summarizes the advantage of portability by saying, “The main purpose of the laptop program was so that student could have access to computers. One of the most common anxiety disorder is social phobia, which can sometimes be interchangeable with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Marc de Rosnay, and others, states that Social Anxiety Disorder is characterized by a clearly noticeable fear and avoidance of most social situations where the individual may be put under scrutiny by others, and by fear in such situations, the individual will behave in an embarrassing manner (de Rosnay). One of the most notable feature of social phobia is that it has an early onset, as early as 7-9 months in most cases. The characteristics of having social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, is that the individuals are shy when meeting new people, quiet in a large group, blush easily, and often avoids making eye contact. There are a lot of concerns/problems with having social anxiety disorder. As a group, individuals with anxiety disorders had the largest burden of role disability compared to other common mental health conditions, exceeding the burden for mood disorders and in some cases, substance abuse (Grigorenko).

Social phobias easily lead individuals to shunning situations where they feel they might be the focus of other people in the society, as they often feel unaccomplished and therefore assume that they will be the subject of the said populations (American Psychiatric Association, 2015). Some colleges and universities have allowed that each student bring their personal laptops with internet connectivity to class while others believe they easily weaken the learning abilities of students instead of promoting and increasing learning in the classroom. To understand why there would be a need for technology in the classroom you must put yourself in the student’s shoes. Let us imagine there is a student in a class full of two hundred plus people. This said student is listening to the prepared lecture for the day and the professor explains a concept. The student does not fully grasp the information so instead of adding to the numerous questions the other two hundred students are asking, she pulls out her laptop. Just a few clicks away is an explanation of the topic. She now understands and is able to continue paying attention to the lecture. Although there are many pros of using computers in class, there are also some negative aspects. Many people think that computers take away the emotion in classroom. They feel like classwork should be given out by pencil and paper. Computers in class can be a huge distraction, such as playing games online in class, sending messages and etc. Using a computer in class can also give a student poor writing habits. Computer corrects verbs and misspelled words for a student which means they aren’t learning the correct grammar. Another con of using computers in class is not having the correct information. Sometimes the internet can give a student false information if they don’t know how to use the internet properly. Many school cannot afford to purchase computers. Purchasing technology can be much for a school. Buying computer and taking the time out to learn how to use them, costs the school more money. For example myself I find it a lot easier and quicker because when I have softball games I take my laptop on the bus and find important information that I need. As time goes by, advances in technology will provide more and more avenues for learning by way of the computer. The Internet has opened the doors of the world and unleashed limitless possibilities in research and education. It may be only a matter of time when the classroom is brought online to all children and attending a school classroom outside the home is a thing of the past. Looking back over the last 20 years, I never would have imagined that computers would come this far and impact our lives so much. Just imagine where they will be 20 years from now.
