Following maternal imprisonment, if children don’t have a trusted caregiver they enter the Child welfare system and go into Foster care homes. Black children of incarcerated parent are becoming overrepresented in the child welfare system, and by 2012 they represented 30 percent of the nation’s foster care population (Robert, 2012). Roberts describes the Foster care system as a significant means to support black children however, it comes with the high prize that requires “poor mothers to relinquish custody of their children in exchange for the state support needed to care for them” (2012).
