The beginning process of digestion starts as pizza enters the gastrointestinal tract through the mouth, where the oral cavities begin mechanically breaking down pizza by the cutting, ripping, and grinding actions of the teeth. As the pizza breaks down it is mixed with saliva; salvia contains salivary amylase, this converts the starches in carbohydrates into simple sugars. Therefore, as your saliva and rolling motion of the tongue turns the pizza into a soft, pliable ball called a bolus. As the bolus slides down into your throat (pharynx), this allows for you to swallow. Within the occurrence through the breakdown of complex molecules into a simpler one just took place, which is the chemical digestion accomplished by enzymes.

Within the action of the gastric juices are helped by the churning in the stomach walls. The semiliquid food is called chyme, as the chyme leaves the stomach through the pyloric sphincter, as it acts as the gatekeeper. This allows a small squirt of chyme into the duodenum from time to time. Pizza takes around 2-4 hours to leave your stomach. For instance, when making pizza for my family I make a thin crust, therefore, I am able to determine the amount of dough being used, using a thin base of fat-free/sugar-free pizza sauce, a thin layer of fat-free mozzarella cheese, vegetables, and a small amount of meat. Therefore, pizza made at home, I am able to utilize the ability of how many carbohydrates, fats, and sugars are used to a healthy snack. However, when going to a pizza restaurant usually you do not have the option to request fat-free/sugar-free sauce, light mozzarella cheese, or the way you would like to have your pizza cooked. Furthermore, you are not able to calculate and control the amount of carbohydrates, sugars, and fats being used to make the pizza at a pizza restaurant. Which is the reasoning why I believe that pizza can be both a healthy and a nonhealthy
For example, a cheese and pepperoni topping pizza at Domino’s is very popular because it is very tasty and delicious to many people and that is why they comeback to Domino’s. The satisfaction of a meal at Domino’s will consist of what type of pizza the customer will pick and either some chicken wings or chocolate cake added to the side. This meal will make a family very satisfied and their temptation of craving the meal again will comeback sometime later in the future, which will make them order again from Domino’s pizza. Another example, will be a dinner meal at Olive Garden, which consists of lasagna, bread sticks, and salad. This meal is very delicious and much healthier than the meal mentioned before this.

It seems letting cravings control what and how to eat is not the best strategy to healthy living. Mary Maxfield, in her article “Food For Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Food” discusses her views on how people should eat. She believes people crave what their bodies need, therefore, people should eat what they crave. Maxfield claims that diet, health, and weight are not correlated with each other, and because of this, people view obesity as unhealthy, thus forcing them to distinguish “right, healthy” foods from the “wrong, unhealthy” choices.

Mechanical digestion means to use force in order to break down food for example the use of chewing or the contraction of muscles. Chemical digestion is when the food is broken down chemically into smaller particles such as the use of the saliva in the mouth.
This is a combination of different set of organs which changes whatever we eat or drink in things that the body uses for growth, energy and repair. The body usually absorbs the nutrients, after the food has been broken down by different chemical processes, the rest is normally expelled as waste product. Imagine you are eating a sandwich containing wheat bread, ham, lettuce, and Swiss cheese. Do you ever wonder where the nutrients go from all of the previous listed ingredients? Well, when a bite of this sandwich is taken, the mouth produces a saliva enzyme called amylase. This enzyme immediately goes to work by breaking down the carbohydrates that are in the bread. Once, the bite is completely chewed, the contents then are swallowed and go down the esophagus and begin to head towards the upper esophageal sphincter and the is involuntarily pushed towards the stomach. The next passage for the sandwich is to go through the lower esophageal sphincter; which transports the sandwich into the stomach.
The digestive system is a very important system in the human body. It is a group of organs that work together to turn food into energy and nutrients in the entire body. The food that was chewed in a humans’ mouth now passes through a long tube that is inside of the body that is known as the alimentary canal. The alimentary canal is made of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, and large intestines. Those few things are not the only important accessories of the digestive system there is also the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

Now, I’m quite an intelligent burger, unlike my other food companions and I love studying about the fascinating human digestive system when I went to Burgerton College.
