The Beauty of Numbers
"There are three kinds of lies-lies, damned lies, and statistics."-Mark Twain
Well, perhaps Mr. Twain didn't see the beauty of numbers the way that I do. Because ever since grade school, mathematics has been my favorite subject. And once I was in college and could focus on many areas of math, I realized that I had a genuine interest to applying mathematical and statistical theories to real-world concerns. Hey, even Twain the skeptic realized the importance of balancing the cargo on shallow, difficult-to-navigate riverboats so that the port and starboardsides were equally laden-he even advised the captains to part their hair down the middle so that the weight was perfectly distributed!

Shirley Chisholm career impacts on our understanding of civil rights by it is an ongoing battle that individuals have to fight for. Her childhood is one of the reasons that ultimately pushed her in the direction of politics and her influence in the civil rights movement. Chisolm parents were from the Caribbean island of Barbados and she was born in Brooklyn, she was sent back to live in Barbados because her parents were less fortunate with her sisters to live with her grandmother and aunt. Her grandmother and aunt instilled racial pride in Chisolm. While she was living in Barbados in a rural area she developed a sense of pride because she was exposed to other individuals of color that were in political power and were in administrative powers,
I have learned that success must be earned. Motivation is keyed in the success. Most people who are very successful (Steve Jobs, Barack Obama, Bernie Madoff, Etc.) are very motivated with their successful business. Angela Duckworth did a Ted Talk about grittiness and how it ties in with being passionate. I think that success also goes in with it. I agree that grittiness is almost identical with being passionate. Duckworth also mentions another thing about growth mindset, which was in Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology”. Growth mindset is a gateway to success is being open to doing new ideas. I think that all the sources that we have read or watched in this class have been connected to one of the other sources. Both Daniel Pink and Angela Duckworth
Throughout our lives we all experience a variety of things that help us define what success means to us. Some people look at success in a materialistic sense, while others take a more spiritual approach. Regardless of the way we view success or the factors that influence that view, we each have our own very unique Personal Philosophy on the subject. Personally, my philosophy is that the implementation of success strategies is key to achieving what one chooses to define as success. I have found that the three most effective success strategies I can use for years to come are being a critical thinker, improving concentration, and being an active listener. All three of these strategies are very practical and relevant to both my educational and professional pursuits, and therefore have proven to be the most effective in regards to my Personal Philosophy of Success.
Also with being successful in your career, you should make sure that you are passionate about it. Being that you have to give your all with a career, you have to make sure that with being passionate that you will not even notice the 200% that you're giving. When building and being successful in your career, an article on self-growth.com suggests that you first create a strategy and make sure you do so once a year, to refresh your skills. Then it suggests that you do not limit yourself when dealing with a job, by going the extra mile and doing more of what is expected of you. This allows you to learn new skills, which is great and much needed when succeeding in your career. (Tomerson)
As human beings, we are facing obstacles, either career wise or in our personal lives; it’s part of the cycle of nature, but within the challenges it improves our self being. Throughout my previous education, I’ve always had an unbalanced interest between academics and extracurricular activities. Due to the lack of interest in the academic classes, I have always given more importance to the extracurricular activities. While conducting research on Steve Jobs, I have learned several valuable methods to succeed in my chosen career field when you encounter problems such as: failing classes, being financially unstable, and losing your most major creation. With the methods learned from the research on Steve
You can’t go to the grocery store and walk away without making at least one comparison, which, you learned in math all your life. Besides waking up in the morning, the first thing you do is get ready for the day. Believe it or not, you are using math as soon as you open your eyes, especially when getting ready. The first thing you do is look at the alarm which already has numbers on it, then you get in the shower and turn the water on and to run the shower you must use electricity. Even though you don’t think about using electricity and running, the water is controlled by numbers.
Marx and Engels had a specific vision for what they wanted their communist government to be. If communism had remained unchanged in its original form, the corruption of the party may not have occurred, and the rest of the world could have learned valuable lessons from the communists. If communism had continued to be what Marx and Engels intended it to be, then communist governments may have been successful. Unfortunately, what they neglected to take into consideration was the greediness that would overcome society. When people become hungry for power, they can easily take advantage of a communist government and corrupt it, transforming it into a totalitarian government. In theory, communism works out well. But as shown in East Germany’s history, communism’s promise of full equality is unlikely, unless government corruption can be prevented.
To investigate the notion of numeracy, I approach seven people to give their view of numeracy and how it relates to mathematics. The following is a discussion of two responses I receive from this short survey. I shall briefly discuss their views of numeracy and how it relates to mathematics in the light of the Australian Curriculum as well as the 21st Century Numeracy Model (Goos 2007). Note: see appendix 1 for their responses.
Educational Goals: Education is extremely important part of my past, present, and future goals. I currently hold an Associate of Applied Science in Graphic Design Media. I have found that an A.A.S Degree does not go as far al I originally intended in the Rochester, MN area and furthering my education will be a necessity for my future career goals. Over the past 2 years I have been working on my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the Minnesota School of Business Rochester campus. I am currently a senior with 3 quarters left before a spring graduation. After a June graduation, I plan on taking a summer quarter break. After summer break I will either continue on at MSB for my Masters in Business Administration with a Minor in Marketing or transferring the University of Minnesota for my Masters in Adult Education. After my Masters Degree is complete I will decide at that time if I wish to continue on and achieve my Ph.D.
Vietnam was a struggle which, in all honesty, the United States should never have been involved in. North Vietnam was battling for ownership of South Vietnam, so that they would be a unified communist nation. To prevent the domino effect and the further spread of communism, the U.S. held on to the Truman Doctrine and stood behind the South Vietnamese leader, Diem.
The academic journey from my childhood up to my ongoing college experience was an important role in defining who I am as an individual. Like any other person, I eventually gained the understanding and importance of essential qualities like time management, work ethic, developing strong mental mindset, and many other things throughout my years of education. Fortunately for me, I became aware of these things much earlier than my peers around me. However, being aware of these things was only a fraction towards success. Over time I’ve realized that the most critical part of success was gaining the discipline and willpower to apply these lessons and concepts.
Communism is an - Economic and social (system) in which all (or nearly all) property and resources are collectively owned by a classless society and not by individual citizens. My career goals are to: (a) initially gain practical experience in the field through employment with a consulting firm, and (b) eventually acquire a teaching position with a college or university, while continuing research and consulting endeavors. I also hope to be a strong influence and encouragement in students' lives through my contact with them during their academic careers.
...ineering with first-class honours is my ultimate academic goal. After that, I am planning to further my study in PhD and make a research about the microstructure. It is easy to set the target but to achieve it need a lot of work and sacrifice the time and money. Strategic planning and full preparation needed to make the dream come to reality. I always tell myself that I have a potential to reach the target, and it is not impossible for me. To motivate me, I do read articles about the successful people as it may give me an inspiration and encourage me to be like them or even more.
