Are the beautiful really lost or are they found? The Beautiful Lost by Luanne Rice, Maia is a 16 year old girl who struggles with depression after her mom left. Maia comes up with a plan to go cross country to find her mom but her plan takes a turn when her crush 16 year old Billy comes along. Together the two teens make their way from Crawford Connecticut USA to Tadoussac Quebec Canada. On their journey they come across several roadblocks and conflicts. The book has its ups and downs but overall it has an amazing story line.
The Beautiful Lost certainly does have its strengths and weaknesses. A big strength is that when you read the novel you feel like you're right there with the characters. Throughout the novel you feel like you’ve never left Maia’s side. You follow her wherever she goes and you feel like you're standing right beside her. For example when she says “The road narrowed, then practically disappeared into the overgrown brush. We felt branches swishing and smashing against the truck doors, and they nearly obscured the way ahead. The thicket enclosed us, but then the road widened slightly and we entered a clearing”(Rice, pg.144).Luanne does a good job on telling you what's happening and how they feel.

One of the novel's weaknesses is some of the characters appear out of nowhere.
Occasionally some of the characters just appear with without saying where they came from or how the got there. I think Luanne should describe how the character got there or at least where he/she came from. The book can be unclear sometimes when a new character comes into play but after a little bit it straightens out. Another weakness is the story isn't very realistic. I think Luanne could have done a better job at making the story line more realistic. So the it is more enjoyable the novel does have its parts where it can get boring but the book leads up to something
big. Every novel has its ups and downs, but this book certainly has a sadder feel to it as the book talks about Maia’s depression and her struggles as a teenager. Luanne did a wonderful job at telling you what Maia’s and the others characters problems were without coming right out and saying it. She made it seem easy to describe what the characters problems are when it's actually fairly hard. Every character has his/her own problem but in the end everyone has a solution to their issue. Even if they make a bad decision they always end up making it right. Luanne could have not done a better job describing her story. “Hope is the only thing stronger than fear” (anonymous). This is an amazing book with a lot of purpose. This book shows you that not everyone is ok inside. This book gives you so much awareness about depression and what it can do to a person. So if you are looking for a good book that you never want to put down and is emotional, then this is a book for you. So are the beautiful lost or are they found?
Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his
I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. Several scenes pleasantly caught me off guard and some were extremely hilarious, namely, the visit to Martha Oldcrow. I found myself really fond of the char...
People are like pieces of various, mind-blowing art projects; they come in all shapes and sizes, and some are more detailed than others. Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Possibility of Evil”, provides a specific example in one character. Miss Strangeworth is introduced, and she can be described as arrogant, outgoing, and meddlesome. Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering what she does, what the narrator says about her, and how other characters interact with her.
Have you ever had to walk a long long ways for something or to see something, if you have this story might just take you by surprise. The story that you are about to get an analysis on is called “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. In the dual perspective story there are two main characters; Nya, a fictional character, and Salva, a real boy living in the middle to late 80s in Southern Sudan. During the story the characters face many obstacles, some being bigger and rougher than others.
In the novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, Nwoye is Okonkwo’s eldest son who is a feminine in the eyes of his father while being a lackadaisical boy just like Unoka was during his lifetime. As a child, Nwoye was often criticized by his father for not being a manly person. Eventually, Ikemefuna comes to fill the void of a manly person and afterwards, Nwoye decided to emulate Ikemefuna as a way to show to his father that he is not a feminine but instead he is transitioning into a manly person. On the other hand after the murder of Ikemefuna, Nwoye decides to distance himself from his father and seems to lose the respect he once had towards his father. Without Ikemefuna’s influence, Nwoye decides to convert back to his gentle nature which basically leads to Okonkwo to view his son as a disappointment and feminine person. Later on in the novel, Nwoye decides to not forgive his father for his betrayal in killing Ikemefuna which ultimately leads to Nwoye to convert into Christianity as a way to show his father that he did a scandalous thing that would never be forgiven.
As I read the book, I could not help but sympathize with Lucy. I felt the pain and anguish that she went through as I imagined how hard it was for her to live her life in hospitals. However, I felt that she could have been more patient with herself. I believe that, had she taken the time to understand her situation better, then she would have avoided most of the pain that she experienced in later years. She did not have a clear understanding of who she was from the beginning. This meant that she was willing to become anyone, and it explains her numerous efforts to reconstruct her face. I believe that this book has valuable less...

The novel Erasure by Percival Everett explores the development of writer Monk Ellison as well as the frame tale Monk sells. After writing My Pafology, Monk continues to struggle with his sister’s death, his mother’s deteriorating health, and the growing sense that he has “sold out”. Monk writes about story ideas, his feelings on art form, and flashbacks to when his father was alive or when he was an adolescent. Through these vignettes of Monk’s thoughts, separated by three ominous X’s, we find not only the extreme intelligence that he has, but also the sadness and isolation his “uniqueness” has brought him. Specifically, he ruins his relationship with Marilyn by criticizing how the book We’s Lives in da Ghetto was on her nightstand, the book
An eleven year old boy walking from a raging civil war to find even the tiniest bit of safety from bombs, men with guns and the lack of water. An eleven year old girl walking 8 hours a day for dirty, diseased filled water. These are the stories of Nya and Salva, two children from southern Sudan in the story A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.
Junot Diaz’s, Drown, is littered with overlooked moments that reveal so much about the characters. In my group’s rendering we made the claim that Ysrael is more than an emotionless superhero. We included the scene of Ysrael standing alone in the rain crying. This moment, to me, is the most important in the whole movie. It’s short and easy to miss, which reflects the easy to miss moment nature of the book but also shows the true complexity of Ysrael’s character.
People with mental conditions, such as Jay’s schizophrenia in the story “A Brother Lost” impacts his relationship with his family and friends, thus making him believe he’s being chased by a group called “the Cahoots”. Unfortunately since Ashely and Jay are siblings she’s living an everyday life as a New Yorker where she works for a woman’s glossy magazine while Jay is out homeless trying to avoid people around him due to what he’s being told in his mind. And because of Jay’s situation Ashely believes he needs help with his mental condition, unfortunately Jay refuses to take his medication, especially since he’s a legal adult who’s allowed to decide whether he should or not. Even though medicine is recommended
On the outside Miss Adela Strangeworth seems like a harmless seventy-one year old spinster. She most likely appears to be a kind and innocent old lady, but in reality she is a deceptive perfectionist with a god like complex. And what she does behind closed doors may just change your mind on how innocent she truly is.
The story didn’t seem like my cup of tea. I have changed that now that I have read and finished the novel. It seems rather interesting how other citizens live and are treated. Even for a person like me, who loves writing more than reading, I’d recommend this book to anyone that is around the age Laila and Mariam are in the book. This specific age group can relate to the feelings these young ladies had. I appreciated reading this book. It enlightened me on how lucky I am to be where I
The movie The Day After Tomorrow is about a paleoclimatologist’s, a person who studies past climates, concerns of how a shift in the world’s climate could cause catastrophic disasters to happen throughout the world. The way that The Day After Tomorrow perceives scientists is that they are determined and they often times have to make difficult decisions. In the movie the character Jack Hall, the paleoclimatologist, displays these two characteristics.
