How The Beatles Still Influence Contemporary Music
Jake Zelinger
We’ve all heard innumerable times that The Beatles are the most influential pop group ever. They were the first to intentionally put guitar feedback on a record, roll a tape backward and personally compose orchestral arrangements for their tracks. Their influence is far reaching, seen especially in artists such as David Bowie, Dr. Dog and Tame Impala.
But is their musical influence really all that relevant to today’s music? Let’s examine, shall we?
1. The first rock record to feature all original works: A Hard Day’s Night
The 1964 hit record A Hard Day’s Night did more for The Beatles and the music industry than anyone could have expected. This was the first rock record to feature

Arrangements and Lyrics that Broke Down Pop Standards: Rubber Soul
I’m going to go ahead and lump the entirety of Rubber Soul into its own moment. This album was revolutionary at the time, featuring musical arrangements and lyrics that broke down all pop standards. Tracks like “We Can Work It Out,” “Girl,” “I’m Looking Through You,” and “If I Needed Someone” expressed a mature perspective toward relationships. This paved the way for other artists to produce deeper lyrics. “Drive My Car” and “Norwegian Wood” opened the door to the ideas of women in power, reversed gender roles and the dark, adulterous side of tour life. Tracks like “Single Ladies” by Beyonce or even Father John Misty’s “Tee-Pee’s 1-12” come to mind.
“Nowhere Man” is absolutely pivotal, marking the very first pop song to contemplate existential themes. The track also begins Lennon’s philosophical writing style, which would later lead to other pop artists exploring similar styles. “The Word” and “Think For Yourself” began The Beatles’ "Voice of a Generation" label as they answered the call of the zeitgeist or "spirit of the times." Can you think of anyone now who considers themselves such? (cough -- Kanye -- cough)?
3. Nonsensical Titles:
The Liverpool rock group known as the Beatles began to form during the year of 1960. The band was made up of four members which included John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Although the Beatles are known as a major influential part of music today, the early years of their career were a difficult. They suffered the struggles of discouragement, being rejected by labels, and changing band members throughout the beginning. However, things began to change during the Beatlemania period. The Tipping Point is described by Malcolm Gladwell as a time of “critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point. This theory can be applied to the Beatles during their rise to fame period known as Beatlemania. There
The Beatles are known, respectively, as the fathers of modern pop music. After their first #1 hit “Please Please Me” was released in 1963 the Beatles were set in motion to become one of the most influential groups of musicians to ever rock our world. With over forty-nine records, 37 #1’s, and thirty- four number one albums (the highest amount of any band in history), there is no denying that they made a monumental ripple in the musical world. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr surprisingly all come from humble beginnings in a town that, until their superstardom, was barely noticed on the map. Liverpool, being kn...
The Beatles are an iconic English rock band and are widely regarded as the “foremost and most influential act of the rock era” (Unterberg). Formed in Liverpool in 1960, the Beatles were comprised of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, with Stuart Sutcliffe on bass guitar in January and Pete
Throughout our history, music has constantly been influenced by trends of its time, reflecting social, economic and political changes. On the other hand, music has defined the culture and social events or leading them to social revolution. For instance, guys like Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder greatly contributed to social events. Such leaders and musical revolutionaries have existed throughout history.
America’s defenses were breached and hysteria gripped the nation. The invasion had begun. However, the sounds of sirens did not fill the streets to warn against nuclear attacks, nor were there warnings to stay indoors. Instead the youth of America rushed into the streets of New York and welcomed the invaders with loud screams and insane fanaticism. The invaders were The Beatles and the members were Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. One of the biggest and influential bands to change the face of music as we know it took the world by storm by introducing new sound, new fashion, and a new way of approaching music. The Beatles have etched a name for themselves and stand in history as one of the greatest bands of all time. However there is a reason why they are regarded so highly and have become the big name that they are today. I never once listened to The Beatles and I didn’t get into music until I was twelve years old, yet at the age of nine I knew who they were. The Beatles are almost a household name in western cultures and that is because of the profound effect they brought upon society at the time. With help from their musical influences, experiences, and being present at the right place at the right time, The Beatles ascended into fame. It is because of factors like their influences, their experiences as a band, their management, and their arrival at the right time that made their takeover that much more successful and influential.

The years 1960-1969 were very impressionable years. With events that changed America , turning the innocence and hope of American people into violence and anger. The young nation of the 60s were the most influential of all ,with rioting about war or turning music into culture. This was a completely different america than it was years before . In a Music standpoint artists such as The Beatles , Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix were changing the way music was made . They were changing music into an artform , a way for people to express their feelings , beliefs and ideas. The Music of the 1960s evolved into an artform which lead the path for American music of today.
The Beach Boys had, and still have, a great impact on American musical history. They've created many trends and have left a mark in the world through their music. Although they did
Music has made an impact on all levels in history. The early days of jazz provided many styles which highlighted the talent and innovation of African American music including Ragtime and Dixieland. Ragtime also contributed to the movement of African Americans to march against racism. Dixieland was a form that made a mockery of how Caucasian people danced. Soul, the movement of power to African Americans. All of which reflected what was going on in history during that time. For traditional jazz to be played in the present time would have no meaning to the people playing it. For instance, a young jazz musician playing Charles Mingus' song "Fables of Faubus" (which was about the wrong doings of governor Faubus) would have no meaning to the musician because he/she never lived that era. As for new, recent music, the artist plays what he/she feels in respect to the present. For instance, Herbie Hancock's new album came out about a month ago called "Possibilities". This album was called his "all-star project" (Downbeat; Pg 38) because it featured new artists like John Mayer, Christina Aguilera, and Paul Simon. The album shows the movement of music to what new form of jazz, soul, and pop our recent era has deve...
...ee younger writers offering some fresh views. David Quantick of the New Musical Express offered one of the best comments in recent years: 'The Beatles only made - they could only make - music that referred to the future. And that is the difference between them and every other pop group or singer ever since'. Anthology 3 could not improve upon the previous collection but there were gems to be found. The acoustic 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' from Harrison is stunning. 'Because', never an outstanding track when it appeared on Abbey Road, is given a stripped a cappella treatment. The McCartney demo of 'Come And Get It' for Badfinger begs the question of why the Beatles chose not to release this classic pop song themselves. In the course of history the Rolling Stones and countless other major groups are loved, but the Beatles are universally and unconditionally adored.
The group had significant influence on the American pop culture because people loved their music and other singers who came after tried to use their style of music. In...
Imagine being a part of a huge crowd, with countless other fans clustered against you. All of the people in the stadium are screaming, making it hard to hear the band playing. All you can feel is the sheer energy, excitement, and emotion contained in the band and the audience. This band is the Beatles. Even today, we call the Beatles one of the pioneers and the symbols of the ‘60s. Fifty years ago, “The Beatles took America by storm” (Aronwitz), and they are still one of the most beloved groups of all time. This legendary band explored many different areas of recording songs and albums, were the culture and style icons of people in that era, and inspired people with meaningful and significant lyrics in their songs.
When people think about the 60’s the majority of them all think about the Beatles. The Beatles is a band that made Rock and Roll a totally, different type of music. Even though The Beatles were such a hit, as time went on they started to fall apart. Over 50 years later, the Beatles are still classified as one of the best band of all time.
Zeppelin to My Chemical Romance, Michael Jackson to Katy Perry, George Jones to Tyler Farr: let’s take a look at how music has changed since the mid 80’s to the modern world. Through genres of music, music has drastically taken a turn from a limited amount to a variety of genres of many varieties of genres and growing of new genres and fading of the past. Music itself has changed Classic rock, Country, Rap, R&B, Pop, and even as far as Disco have changed drastically through the years. The sound has changed also including the material that the music has been written about over time.
George Gershwin once said, “True music must repeat the thought and inspirations of the people and the time. My people are Americans and my time is today.” Over the years, no form of art has attached itself to humanity more than music. Music has been creating and destroying cultures in the Twentieth Century at a very rapid rate. Fads come and go, but true music and the heart behind it never dies.
