There are many underlying messages that an author conveys in his or her writing that correspond to the social problems present in today’s society. As for the social issues present in A Tale of Two Cities and The Bean Trees, these novels discuss two topics that correlate with each other and reflect upon the world we live in today. Such examples of social issues are abuse and discrimination, which are also viewed in current events. The act of discrimination creates an intolerable reason to utilize abuse for addressing problems that people encounter.

One of the characters from The Bean Trees, Virgie Mae, is strongly negative towards those of other races. During a dinner at Lou Ann’s house on night she exclaims “‘Before you know it the whole world will be here jibbering and jabbering till we won’t know it’s America...it’s the truth. They ought to stay in their own dirt, not coming here taking up jobs’” (Kingsolver 106-107). Based on this character’s tone in the quote, what many believe to be the cause of their everyday problems is one of the things Virgie Mae blames her other people on. Even though diversity in the U.S. helps people to eliminate the boundaries, there are some who choose to believe in their own opinions. Before taking into account for who these people really are, many of us start by judging others by one’s appearance. In a United Nations news report from a news article, it states that “Attacks against girls accessing education… appear in some countries to be occurring with increasingly regularity… such attacks form part of broader patterns of violence, inequality and discrimination” (Murphy). Later on in the article, it says that the attack “... ranges from abductions to acid assaults to sexual violence” (Murphy). Women and girls in some of these countries are not being treated as human beings but as objects to play around with.
