He snaps back into reality as the mug slips from his hand and smashes on the ground. Edward hears the bedroom door open and goes to greet his girlfriend Rose. As he returns to the kitchen to clean up the mess, the mug is sitting on the bench filled with coffee as if nothing had happened. Puzzled, he returns to the seat and begins to aimlessly browse the internet. From an outsider’s point of view someone is watching Edward’s every move. In the background of the scene a dark figure can be seen outside on the veranda. Looking at his watch, Edward notices the time and is late for work. He grabs his knapsack and heads towards the door. He passes his home office. Sitting on the desk is a picture frame. Edward casually looks into the direction of the photo and continues to walk. The photo is of a dark figure. Edward makes this realisation and whips around to face the photo once more – the photo in the frame is of his family. Edward begins to become anxious due to these strange occurrences. Rose enters the hallway and approaches Edward and asks him what is wrong. Edward quickly replies, plastering a fake smile on his face and rushes out the front door. Act 2: As he rushes out the front door, Edward slams the door behind him fumbling for his car keys. As he looks down at his black formal shoes, he notices his shoelace is untied. He carefully places his knapsack onto the ground to tie his shoelace. Once he is finished, he looks up from the ground and directly across the street a strange man locks glances with him as he too finished tying his shoelace. Edward finds this strange which is evident by the concerned look on his face. He grabs his knapsack and heads towards his car which is parked down the street. As he walks along the footpath, an eerie feeling overwhelms his as if someone if following him. As he looks around, he cannot see anyone acting abnormal (the camera shows a point of view shot of someone watching Edward). Cautiously, he continues walking. Edward is startled when he is abruptly stopped by the strange man from earlier (point of view shot of someone exiting bushes and stopping Edward). The strange man reveals his name as Karl and asks Edward about the phenomenon that have been occurring in his life. Character Outline Edward Avery Summary: Edward is the 21 year old male protagonist who has a full time job at a rundown financial advice firm. His job creates a tense atmosphere in his household as his constant stress and work load forces him to become distant and detached from himself and his long-time girlfriend, Rose. After a tragic accident, his personality became stone hearted and monotonic. Edward feels as if he is lost in the world around him, forcing him to become numb and withered by life. This feeling of emptiness starts to overwhelm him to the point where he continuously zones out and appears to hallucinate. The strange happenings in his life become his main focus, driving him mad as he attempts to discover the truth about where and who he is. Edward’s newly found personality is shown through his unkempt brown hair and tired appearance. His usual attire are long black trousers matched with creased dress shirt, a tattered tie and scuffed leather shoes which compliments his tallness. Karl Darning Summary: Once a person has been involved in an accident, they will not know anything about their state of being in a coma.
Their lives continue to exist within their imagination. As their ‘lives’ continue, strange phenomena begin to occur as the time they have been induced in the coma progresses. Once these phenomena begin to regularly occur, Karl appears as a figment of their imagination. Karl appears in the form of a short, hunchback-like 20 year old who portrays himself as a strange, disorganised man. His unusual dress sense and unwashed hair displays his disjointed personality to whom must force Edward to believe his life is not what it seems to be. This book has great balances of love interests, actions, and internal conflict with characters. It has an interesting story so far with new pieces coming up every few chapters that are very important. Like Al attacking Tris, Eric talking about Divergents and how the rebels must be eliminated. Tris and Four are developing feelings for each other, which I find weird because he is basically her teacher. They are only two years apart, so the relationship is not that awkward. In this journal I will be predicting, evaluating, and questioning.

The Awakening is a novel about the growth of a woman becoming her own person; in spite of the expectations society has for her. The book follows Edna Pontellier as she struggles to find her identity. Edna knows that she cannot be happy filling the role that society has created for her. She did not believe that she could break from this pattern because of the pressures of society. As a result she ends up taking her own life. However, readers should not sympathize with her for taking her own life.
“At the window she raises the shade and a dusky southside morning light comes in feebly” (Act 1, Sc 1, 24).
The very first lines of the story sets the tone and setting of this book. It explains that in order for a man to be successful, he needs a wife. It lays the foundation for the idea that a women depends on man to survive in society. Wealthy, upper class men were the biggest targets for a women to marry because marriage was the entrance into high society. Mrs. Bennet exclaims, “Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls! (Austen 2)” This shows the dependence of women on man and the hope a promising bachelor gives to a family of daughters. Women were raised to be promising wives for man. Learning to cook, play instruments, look pretty, and clean were all essential

Pale as the ghost he was going to become, Prospero gentley landed on the floor of the black room, where he was certain he would meet his demise. The black room contained the ominous ornaments and tapestries as it always had, but it now had Death. The blood red pane cast an eerie light that bathed the entire room in a dim, bloody light. Death loomed over the guant figure barely recognizable as the once honorable Prince Prospero, for he now had the appearance of an elderly man with greyed hair that sprouted from his leathery, wrinkled skin. The eleventh toll chimed and the prince was reduced to a pile of black ash, indistinguishable from any other dust pile. When the final twelfth toll sounded, Death vanished along with the light from the brazier in the black room, leaving the entire castle empty and devoid of any life.
Ranging from caged parrots to the meadow in Kentucky, symbols and settings in The Awakening are prominent and provide a deeper meaning than the text does alone. Throughout The Awakening by Kate Chopin, symbols and setting recur representing Edna’s current progress in her awakening. The reader can interpret these and see a timeline of Edna’s changes and turmoil as she undergoes her changes and awakening.
A theme in which plays an important part in the novel, The Awakening, is that choices have inevitable consequences. This is connected with Realism because a big belief in Realism is; ethical choices are often the subject, character is more important than action and plot. In multiple cases in this novel, the reader sees the type of choices the characters make and the effects and outcomes that follow after them. Also in some ways, people change their personality and their change in character adds a part in their future. Leonce choice of how he views Edna and he treats her have an effect on him and consequences on and her. Edna is a big part of this novel being the main protagonist and all of her ethical choices that have an enormous consequence on her. Some of these choices are, wanting to be with Robert, to follow the path of Mademoiselle Reisz and becoming an artist, and ultimately deciding to take her life.
I think that what the author was trying to imply in this passage was that in his personal experience, he has noticed that many people take many things for granted and that they don’t live their lives according to what they want and need to do. So much is wasted during one’s lifetime, and people just allow their lives to pass them by.
In comparison to other works such as Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn wherein the title succinctly tells what the story shall contain, Kate Chopin’s The Awakening represents a work whose title can only be fully understood after the incorporation of the themes and content into the reader’s mind, which can only be incorporated by reading the novel itself. The title, The Awakening, paints a vague mental picture for the reader at first and does not fully portray what content the novel will possess. After thorough reading of the novel, one can understand that the title represents the main character, Edna Pontellier’s, sexual awakening and metaphorical resurrection that takes place in the plot as opposed to not having a clue on what the plot will be about.
