The sequence of words above are those things that comes from Malcolm X that more or less have changed many people perspectives toward their future. Same as others, I have choose to read ‘The Autobiography of Malcolm X’ by Alex Harley for my book review assignment of EDC 3362. The main reason why I choose this book is because the main theme of ‘The Autobiography of Malcolm X’ is dealing with our contemporary moral issue which is about the challenged that faced by African-American because of the oppression from white people. Some of us may think that this is a simple issue but after I read this book, I can see that oppression and inequality can cause a huge impact in the life of one who being oppressed. Eventhough I have an interest to read …show more content…
We can say that different people have their own hardship in their life. However, for Malcolm X, he came from minority group that being oppressed that for sure his life more miserable than us. The first issue is regarding his teacher. As a teacher, he should encourages his students to be what they want to be in the future without care about their races. In this world, we have same opportunity to become a success person. So, how can his teacher, demotivate Malcolm by saying all those things. His action of course disobey the teaching ettiquette and the most important thing is he devalues the dignity of others human being. By this action, I can say that status that someone had does not guarantee he or she should be respect until they showed the value of humanity in themselves first. The teacher should be blame of or becoming the reason of dropoutof Malcolm. Because of his teacher perception towards him, Malcolm started to leave school and this is the starting point where he involved with all the criminals matters. Sometimes, as a human being we should think first before we speak as we do not know whether it can give positive or negative impact towards the …show more content…
At the first stage, Malcolm changed because of Eiljah Muhammad. This is good but overly idolized Eiljah Muhammad that sometimes make me think that Malcolm actually not worshipped God but he worshipped Elijah. From my opinion, the most reliable sources of Islam is Al-Quran and As-sunnah. So, we do not need others to tell us all the principlesas the essence of Islam already in those two sources. In conclusion, ‘The Autobiography of Malcolm X’ is an interesting and infromative book that should be read by everyone. However, for those does not have any interest in History, you must prepare yourself physically and mentally to completing this book. From the book, we can extract many moral issues that arises without we know. Hence, as a Muslim, we should always concern and be knowledgeable as possible in order to preserve our
The reading on Malcolm X had lots of points that hit everyday society in America for African Americans. Malcolm X was like any other man hustling on the streets to get by, like a lot you see in today society with the drug dealers and such. Starting off Malcolm X was not an intelligent man; he didn’t know how to write without a little slang to his words, he didn’t know how to articulate what he wanted to be said. Malcolm X was convicted of robbery and was sent to Charleston Prison, but was later sent off to the Norfolk Prison Colony School, this is where he gave himself the educated needed to be a well productive citizen. Malcolm X stated, “I saw that the best thing I could do was get hold of a dictionary-to study, to learn some new words (p.211). “I spent two days just riffling uncertainly through the dictionary’s pages.” “Finally, just to start some kind of action, I began copying.” Here Malcolm X is seeing his time being served in prisons to not only be a lessoned learned but to learn something that he knew he would never learn...
The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told by Alex Haley is about a man who changed the history of America. Malcolm (Little) X preached what he believed about racism, discrimination, and segregation. He went through many changes in his fight for equality. The three transformations that really changed the way Malcolm thought and preached where his transformation in prison, his transformation into the Islamic religion (following Elijah Muhammad), and the biggest transformation of all, his pilgrimage to Mecca. In all of Malcolm actions, teachings and transformations we learn different points of view and we get a good look at different aspects of events. The life of Malcolm (Little) X as told in his autobiography should be read by all.
The Nation of Islam, which Malcolm X was an important member of, is not a religious organization as the name suggests but rather an organization whose goal was to make the lives of African Americans better instead of actually teaching the proper ethics of Islam. One of the main objectives of this organization was Black Nationalism, through which Black leaders can control the areas where there is a majority of African Americans. This cause was greatl...
Malcolm X was often encountered by Muslims from other countries who wished to “enlighten” him with what they felt was true Islam. He was initially very skeptical towards these claims but eventually his curiosity got the better of him. To get to know the religion better, Malcolm was directed by his friends to an Egyptian professor in New York, Dr. Mahmoud Youssef
This paper is written to give my personal reflection on a book entitled The Autobiography of Malcolm X. It is one of the assignments for EDC3360 Course, Social Work for Community Service. We were asked to read this book because the content of this book has relation with the course we are taken for the current semester.
Alex Haley’s, Autobiography of Malcolm X, continues to teach us of the prominent African American leader in the Nation of Islam. He starts off before Malcolm Little was even born, talking of his father and mother and how white members of the KKK drove his family out of their home and into Lansing, Michigan. In Lansing, their family was harassed once again by a white racist group, the Black Legion. Malcolm’s father died when he was six, and his mother was placed in a mental hospital seven years after this incident.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X follows the life of an international figure, Malcolm X. During Malcolm’s life he faces the hard facts that no matter how smart and intelligent he is, he will never be held above even the least intelligent white. Blacks are allowed success but only to a certain point. That point declares that Blacks can never infringe on the success of Whites, and when they do so, their ideas, aspirations, and intelligence will be shot down into the racial stereotypes this society has be known to understand.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X, co-written by Alex Haley and Malcolm X, follows the life, impressions made, ideas, and lessons learned by one Malcolm Little; known today as Malcolm X, El-Hajj El-Shabazz, and as one of the most influential voices in the Black Power and Civil Rights movements. The book was copyrighted in 1965, shortly after Malcolm’s assassination.
In The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Muslim leader and black rights activist, Malcolm X, changes through a few significant events in his life. He went from an optimistic young boy, to a mischievous, law-breaking hustler, to a reformed man who sought to improve the way America viewed race. From the start of junior high, to his pilgrimage to the Holy City of Mecca, Malcolm X experiences three key events that change his life and develop the central idea of systemic oppression in the text.
HE graduated 8th grade with good grades, just as he thought his father would have wanted him to do. At the age of 15 Malcolm dropped out of school and began to learn the ways of the streets. He became acquainted with hoodlums, thieves, dope peddlers, and pimps. When he was twenty Malcolm was convicted of burglary, and he remained in prison till he was 27. While he was in prison he began to educated himself and he learned about and joined the Nation of Islam. He studied the teachings of Elijah Muhammad fully. In 1952 he was released a changed man. When he was released he went to Detroit and he joined the daily activity of the sect and was given instructions by Elijah Muhammad himself. After the teachings of Muhammad he changed his name to Al-Haji Malik El-Shabazz. His commitment helped build the organization nation-wide, while making him and international figure.
El-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, or better known as Malcolm X, was an Afro-American minister of the Nation of Islam (NOI) and human rights activist whose journey for racial equality and religious freedom infuriated white-America throughout the 60’s. Malcolm’s courage and ability to overcome adversity has been showcased through the Hollywood blockbuster hit-film Malcolm X, as directed and produced by Spike Lee. I plan to investigate Lee’s film and highlight the primary objective in making Malcolm X, while simultaneously capturing the religious elements of this film. Furthermore, I will conduct and analytical comparison of the films companion book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X as authored by Alex Haley, contrasting similarities between the two.
Malcolm shares his dream job with the class and his teacher, Mr. Ostrowski. Mr. Ostrowski told him “Malcolm, one of life’s first needs is for us to be realistic. Don’t misunderstand me, now. We all here like you, you know that. But you’ve got to be realistic about being a nigger.”(Page 38) and this makes Malcolm realize that Mr. Ostrowski has supported and encouraged his peers but not him. The teacher heartened the other students not because they were performing better than Malcolm but because they were white. This event develops the idea of of systemic oppression and racial tensions. Malcolm isn’t allowed to say what he wants to be because of the color of his complexion and because of this event, he comes to adapt the ideal of integration vs separation later in his life.
A combination of vast experiences, Malcolm X tells all in his autobiography written by him and Alex Haley. Employed in dialogue, he creates, in effort, a better image for the reader of the courteous person Malcolm was and the changes according to his situations. Despite changing his tone from matter-of-fact to fiery, tumultuous, he possesses an effective control over it to emphasize the message he wants to send and his sentiments during the event. From his recollections of childhood to political diatribe, his story veered continuously without shying away from the racial or controversial topic. He gives his audience the sense of his real thoughts, as if the readers were there themselves.
Malcolm reflects the recent learning and compares himself to Paul from the Bible,” upon hearing the voice of Christ, was so smitten the he was knocked off his horse in a daze.” (page 166). This is when Malcolm Little begins to turn into Malcolm X since he converts to Islam and starts to recruit brothers into Islam and teach them Yacub’s History.
First of all, I apologise for this late submission. Reading Malcolm x has taken a very long time than I had imagined. It was really hard for me to understand it, that I had to withdraw so many times and get back to it. Most of the time, I would feel exhausted reading it and I had to paused because I can’t digest it anymore. I think it is because of the language ( I am weak to understand it) and as I went through chapters 18 & 19, I barely understand his logics. Sometimes, I have to read repeatedly. And you know, it was hard to get the book, I had to go to Petaling Jaya to catch the second last piece. But Alhamdulillah here I am writing the reflection right after finishing reading the book.
