The capacity to love and be loved enhances communication and benefits the individual’s overall well-being. Furthermore, they are essential to positive outcomes for self and others. People can grow their capacity to love and be loved by taking actions others would perceive as loving and being more vulnerable rather than closed off.
One may be asking, “What’s love got to do with it?” Well, love is important in maintaining close personal relationships. Communication skills improve when love is expressed in nonverbal and verbal communication (CSULB). In order to converse effectively a person should express their feelings. Humans, among other species, learn to express their feelings early on as babies through what is known as an attachment theory. Attachment theory is the development of the relationship between a mother and her child, which is the first close personal relationship anyone has. How well their relationship is can be a predictor of that child’s well-being and how they form other relationships (Schacter, Gilbert, and Wegner, 2009).

These ways could be demonstrating true expressions of love and facing fears of intimacy. True expressions of love relate feelings of closeness, belonging, and attachment to one another (Whitbourne). It could be as simple as reaching out and asking, "How are you today?" because you thought of them. Affectionate behavior between partners is another way. Affectionate behavior is rated on whether or not one 's partner says, "I love you", offering compliments, and public affection, which can also help someone conquer their fear of intimacy
