The Atlantic Coastal Conference is considered an underdog to other conferences in college football. When people think of the ACC their first thought is usually an unscrupulous thought, or that their team would beat anyone in the conference. For example, many people thought that Georgia Tech against Florida State would be a blow out. After watching the game it was completely the opposite. Throughout this past season there has been many excitingly finished games. Compared to other conferences the ACC is very underrated; it includes three top twenty-four teams, thirty-seven national championships throughout fourteen teams, and hundreds impressive wins over highly ranked teams. November 3, 2015, Clemson was ranked number one in the nation. Hundreds
and thousands of college football fans were extremely surprised to see this. Some even believe Clemson do not even deserve the number one spot at all. Clemson shares the top twenty-five with other ACC teams Notre Dame and Florida State. If Clemson were to win the College Football National Championship it would be a special moment for all ACC fans. The four other power five conferences look down to the ACC, and have for several years. With Clemson being placed number one that view might transform into looking up to them. The Atlantic Coastal Conference has thirty-seven national championships among fourteen teams. The Miami Hurricanes house fifteen out the thirty-seven trophies on site of their football complex. Having a team in the playoffs is one thing, but then being able to win the championship is a completely different feeling. Winning it all can do a lot for a program, and its conference. When one team from a conference sees another do well it motivates them to play harder than usual. Clemson has been a great example of this for each other team in the ACC. Last year number sixteen Georgia Tech beat number nine Georgia in an exciting rivalry game during their remarkable season. This win was one of several impressive wins throughout the ACC in the previous years. College football is a great source of entertainment for many people of all ages. It is even more exhilarating when it is a close game. For instance, in 2013 Florida State beat Auburn in the National Championship game 34-31 in the final seconds of the game. Thousands of Florida State fans had the time of their lives winning the championship. Matched up against other conferences the Atlantic Coastal Conference can be under viewed, but it should not be due to a handful of top twenty five ranked teams, thirty seven national championships and counting, and many extraordinary out of conference wins. Many ACC fans are looking forward to another great ACC championship this year. Next time you hear someone talking cruel about the ACC just recall how unappreciated they truly are.
In basketball, the National Championship game is the dream of every kid that plays basketball in college. NC State’s basketball team wasn’t well known in 1983. Jim Valvano was the coach and he knew he had a great group of kids. When they won the ACC tournament against the great Ralph Sampson and Virginia, people thought that the win was just luck and they probably wouldn’t make last when they got into the tournament. Throughout the tournament, NC State kept surviving and advancing. In Johnathan Hock’s documentary “Survive and Advance”, Hock uses stock footage of the games that were played during the tournament, different points of view from the players, and the sequence of the documentary to prove that NC State’s basketball team were the underdogs during the whole tournament; however they were able to win despite their adversity
The Bowl Championship Series is a very fair way of determining a college football national champion. Every division one football team has a chance to clime up the Bowl Championship Series rankings. Teams that play harder schedule are favored in the Bowl Championship Series system, therefore a team can not “cup cake” its way to a national championship. With a playoff system, seeding is based solely on a teams record and does not take into account strength of schedule. In the playoff system, a team can put together a relatively easy schedule and be placed into the playoffs over a team that deserves it. Under the current proposed playoff plan, the playoffs will have sixteen teams. In division one football, there are over 100 bowl eligible teams. A lot of teams are going to be left out to dry by the proposed playoff plan.
While both the people of the New England region and of the Chesapeake region descended from the same English origin, by 1700 both regions had traveled in two diverse directions. Since both of these groups were beset with issues that were unique to their regions and due to their exposure to different circumstances, each was forced to rethink and reconstruct their societies. As a result, the differences in the motivation, geography, and government in the New England and Chesapeake regions caused great divergence in the development of each.
There are always different areas and beliefs in big cities, but in some cities they are taken to a whole new level. Everyone is proud of where they are from naturally, whether it’s in regards to their sports team, schools, or maybe a famous product that originated from there. There is a very well known divide in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, where there seems to be a highway or street creating an invisible line. Cincinnati is well known for its education, food, and the diverse lifestyles one may be able experience in the rather large suburban area. If someone asks a Cincinnatian where they’re from, they will proudly respond with either the Westside or Eastside! Common phrases one may hear are, “Westside best-side or Eastside money-side.” It’s not necessarily true that someone is considered good or bad due to their response; it’s just a pride factor to them.
The best recruiting class in NCAA history came in and changed the game. Before they came to college, players still wore short shorts and the only people caught wearing black socks on a basketball court were 60-year olds trying to be young again. They changed the game with their great basketball skills, and their swagger. The road to greatness wasn't very easy for some though; they lived a tough life, and used that as motivation to drive them to greatness. They were are Michigan's Fab Five.
Do you like professional football? Have you ever wondered where teams originate from? Or what teams have been around the longest? The Pittsburgh Steelers are a professional team that has an extensive history. There are also many unique details about them that other NFL teams do not have. There creator was a great man who started the team from practically nothing, their name and logo represent great tradition, and lastly, they have won many championships.
In 1970 the nation was in its highest state of controversy. The generation gap that had begun to form in the sixties was now more of a ravine. The youth of America was finally standing up and raising their voices in protest against all the problems that plagued the country they would have control of in years to come. There were many events that helped in feeding the flame in the hearts of Americans. One such event was the Kent State University incident. It is an event that touched the nation and made such a profound mark, and yet it only lasted for thirteen seconds. In the thirteen seconds the Ohio National Guard, along with the rest of government by association, established themselves as the new enemy. All eyes were on them, scrutinizing their every move, pointing out every mistake they made. Interestingly enough, most don’t even really know exactly what went on in those thirteen seconds, but they knew that it left four students dead and nine injured at the hand of the National Guard, so that was enough to strike the hearts on millions. Still today, twenty-nine years later, we still don’t really know what went on. Who fired the first shot, and were they provoked? Was it necessary for the National Guard to be present on this typically calm college campus in the first place? And why did it have to end in such tragedy? There are so many questions, and so many misconceptions about this incident, and like any controversial issue, there are always two sides to the story.
Urban legends are the supernatural folklore of our modern society. From one generation to the next, they orally travel throughout the world, constantly changing from one region to the next. Although cultural variations exist, the core of all these urban legends remains the same, to unveil the universally known individual and societal fears. “The Graveyard Wager” is a timeless urban legend told again and again, and the one of which I will explore more in depth.
There is one sport’s rivalry that is known as the greatest of them all. It isn’t the Tobacco Road Rivalry, it isn’t the Iron Bowl, and it isn’t even the Red Sox against the Yankees. According to ESPN at the turn of the century, the greatest sports rivalry is Ohio State versus Michigan in college football. While many Wolverine fans claim that the Michigan football program is the superior one, there are a variety of reasons that show otherwise. Statistically, in the modern era of college football, Ohio State has been the better program. This can be supported through simple head-to-head records and championships, as well as complex systems that rank football programs. The main counterclaim by many Michigan fans in this debate will revolve around two things: the number of national titles they claim, and the overall series record of 58-45-6 in favor of Michigan. These claims might seem to be valid, but upon further review the claims have little validity in today’s modernized version of college football. In addition, the Michigan program is rampant with elitism that was destructive for other programs and has harmed their current program that is not present in Ohio State’s program.
The Southern Methodist University football scandal, also known as Ponygate, was one of the most severe consequences that the NCAA has ever given out to a college or university. In this instance, the Southern Methodist University football program was found to be illegally paying their players after already being in trouble with the NCAA several times. The first time this football program had been caught by the NCAA for not following its rules was in 1985. This was when an incident regarding offensive lineman Sean Stopperich came up. Prior to transferring schools after going through an injury which made him unable to play, he was paid $5,000 by one of the Southern Methodist Universities booster programs to attend the school and play football there. This caused “the NCAA to place SMU on three years of probation in 1985, limit its postseason appearances, ban the boosters involved and strip the football program of 45 scholarships.” This did not show the program or the school a lesson though. Again in 1986 the Southern Methodist University football program was found breaking NCAA rules. This was their seventh time they had broken and been caught breaking NCAA rules. This time it was found that, “an unnamed booster had been found to have paid 13 Mustang players $61,000 from a slush fund with the approval of key members of the SMU athletic staff.” The result of this complication with NCAA rules is what became known as the, “death penalty”. This death penalty declared that there were to be, “no football in '87. only seven games in '88. no television or bowl appearances until 1989 and restrictions on off-campus recruiting and the number of assistant coaches until 1989 SMU which signed no high school players to letters of intent this winter...
Do you think picking your 4 favorite types of candy is hard? Wouldn’t it be easier if you were able to choose your favorite 8 types of candy? Well right now it is like that with the college football playoff system. During the BCS era they had one game between the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams and the winner would play the number 1 ranked team for the national championship. All the brand new FBS does is add one more game therefore only adding one more team, so instead of just adding one more team to the mix, this is still unfair.
College athletes are manipulated every day. Student athletes are working day in and day out to meet academic standards and to keep their level of play competitive. These athletes need to be rewarded and credited for their achievements. Not only are these athletes not being rewarded but they are also living with no money. Because the athletes are living off of no money they are very vulnerable to taking money from boosters and others that are willing to help them out. The problem with this is that the athletes are not only getting themselves in trouble but their athletic departments as well.
The National Football League (NFL) has been a staple on Sunday’s in America homes for quiet sometime. It provides excitement and generates billion’s of dollars, but what I told you that this league may lose viewers or even not exist in a few years. The NFL is a great brand, but what is potentially going up against may have you scratching your head as a parent to let your child even take a snap early in his football career if not taken care of.
The National Football League (NFL) has come under fire for the long-lasting medical consequences of players’ game-related head injuries. The question that arises is; is the NFL to blame for the deaths of former players such as Junior Seau, Jovan Belcher, Ray Easterling, and/or O.J. Murdock? The medical and scientific factors in addition to legal liabilities in regards to brain injuries will be outlined in this paper.
Within March, hundreds of men’s college basketball players dreams are crushed for no reward. During the march madness tournament, athletes, fans, ESPN analyst, and all people who consist in creating a bracket have heartbreaks and lots of excitement. While there are a few others who do not care to pay attention to the tournament, many people are drawn to watch the athletes and teams to compete against each other. The NCAA tournament spans for less than four weeks every year starting in mid march and ending in early April (“NCAAM Tournament Schedule”). According to ESPN, the NCAA tournament has existed since 1939 and has an increase in views every year (Scosh). The NCAA tournament is becoming just as popular as other major sports events like
