“The artists” is a movie that is unique in the forms of design, but encompasses a general movie that in the end results as any other romantic film. Although not entirely perfect or excellent as a whole, the movie “The Artist” is a great film that does a good job at depicting a romantic drama Based in the late 1920’s, The Artist, starts off with introducing us to George Valentin, a popular silent movie actor and star of Kinograph motion pictures. After the premiere of one of his films, he stumbles upon Peppy Miller, who is a fan of his and an aspiring actress. Tim Dirks, creator and writer of the website filmsite, defines romance in film as love stories that can progress as emotional, romantic, or affectionate involvement of the main protagonist (Dirk, Tim). In The Artist, the main story revolves around Valentin’s refusal to progess into the new film technological advancements, but the storyline is also is about a love story between Valentin and Peppy. In the scene, which Peppy is put into a dancing scene with Valentin, they make many retakes of that scene, but in the final take, it is seen that Valentin is looking at Peppy with affection, and also Peppy at him, but Valentin hesitates and leaves since he is a married man. This scene begins to show that there is a love story with an obstacle in this film. A romantic drama film is a sub-genre of romance, which usually has obstacles that prevent protagonist who have feelings for each other to be together (“Drama”). The movie does a good job in depicting this type of romance because of the various scenarios that revolve around drama and love. Throughout the movie, it is seen that Peppy cares about Valentin, even after he has gone to the shadows of film. Instead of going to her own premiere of her movie, she goes to watch Valentin’s movie and can be seen that she still enjoys his acting. It is Peppy that bids out Valentin’s stuff that he was selling, and it is also Peppy who goes to the hospital to see Valentin after the fire. There are various scenes that show how much Peppy is in love with Valentin, but is not able to get close to him because of her career. Although not as noticeable as Peppy, it is evident that Valentin still has feelings for Peppy after years, since the only film that he saved was the one that Peppy was in. It is also possible that Valentin was not able to show his feelings towards Peppy because of his circumstance and Peppy’s involvement in
