“The artists” is a movie that is unique in the forms of design, but encompasses a general movie that in the end results as any other romantic film. Tim Dirks, creator and writer of the website filmsite, defines romance in film as love stories that can progress as emotional, romantic, or affectionate involvement of the main protagonist (Dirk, Tim). In The Artist, the main story revolves around Valentin’s refusal to progess into the new film technological advancements, but the storyline is also is about a love story between Valentin and Peppy. In the scene, which Peppy is put into a dancing scene with Valentin, they make many retakes of that scene, but in the final take, it is seen that Valentin is looking at Peppy with affection, and also Peppy at him, but Valentin hesitates and leaves since he is a married man. This scene begins to show that there is a love story with an obstacle in this film. The movie does a good job in depicting this type of romance because of the various scenarios that revolve around drama and love. Throughout the movie, it is seen that Peppy cares about Valentin, even after he has gone to the shadows of film. Instead of going to her own premiere of her movie, she goes to watch Valentin’s movie and can be seen that she still enjoys his acting. It is Peppy that bids out Valentin’s stuff that he was selling, and it is also Peppy who goes to the hospital to see Valentin after the fire. There are various scenes that show how much Peppy is in love with Valentin, but is not able to get close to him because of her career. Although not as noticeable as Peppy, it is evident that Valentin still has feelings for Peppy after years, since the only film that he saved was the one that Peppy was in. It is also possible that Valentin was not able to show his feelings towards Peppy because of his circumstance and Peppy’s involvement in

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a play commonly viewed and known as a true love story; however, after analyzing several hints portrayed by the protagonists, it is evident that Shakespeare did not intend to make Romeo and Juliet seem like a true love story but a criticism of how superficial society’s view on love is.

Jackson Pollock was an American abstract artist born in Cody, Wyoming in 1912. He was the youngest of his five brothers. Even though he was born on a farm, he never milked a cow and he was terrified of horses because he grew up in California. He dropped out of high school at the age of seventeen and proceeded to move to New York City with his older brother, Charles, and studied with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League. Thomas Benton was already a great artist at the time in which Pollock studied with him. Benton acted like the father figure in Pollock’s life to replace the original that wasn’t there. Benton was known for his large murals that appear on ceilings or walls. “Jack was a rebellious sort at all times,” recalls his classmate and friend, artist Harold Lehman. He grew his hair long and helped pen a manifesto denouncing athletics, even though “he had a muscular build and the school wanted to put him on the football team,” says former teacher Doug Lemon. Pollock always was upset with himself in his studies because he had troubles drawing things like they were supposed to look. From 1938 to 1942, Jackson joined a Mexican workshop of people with a painter named David Siqueiros. This workshop painted the murals for the WPA Federal Art Projects. This new group of people started experimenting with new types of paint and new ways of applying it to large canvas. People say that this time period was when Jackson was stimulated with ideas from looking at the Mexican or WPA murals. Looking at paintings from Picasso and the surrealists also inspired Jackson at this time. The type of paint they used was mixing oil colors with paint used for painting cars. Jackson noticed that the shapes and colors they created were just as beautiful as anything else was. Jackson realized that you didn’t have to be able to draw perfect to make beautiful paintings. Jackson started developing a whole new way of painting that he had never tried before and his paintings were starting to look totally different from before.
The portrayal of art cinema is to some extent accurate when considering the time period of this film. Art film was first introduced to the American film industry during the period of time when this film came out. Art cinema utilizes its own set of artistic expression. Hollywood classical films on the other hand, are at odds with the artistic concept, and are considered to be mainstream. When we look at Classical films, we think of the basic Hollywood movie where there is a beginning, middle and end, and the whole movie comes together at the end, with a little bit of romance. In this specific movie, the audience is faced with a confusing dilemma of choosing whether this movie is an art film or a classical film. Most even think it has a documentary approach, but what makes this movie even more successful and even more entertaining, is that it is both art cinema and classical cinema.

The typical Hollywood film revolves around a protagonist, whose struggle to achieve a specific goal or resolve a conflict becomes the foundation for the story. André Bazin, in his “On the politique des auteurs,” argues that this particular system of filmmaking, despite all its limitations and constrictions, represented a productive force creating commercial art. From the Hollywood film derived transnational and transcultural works of art that evoked spectatorial identification with its characters and emotional investment into its narrative. The Philadelphia Story, directed by George Cukor in 1940, is one of the many works of mass-produced art evolving out of the studio system. The film revolves around Tracy Lord who, on the eve of her second wedding, must confront the return of her ex-husband, two newspaper reporters entering into her home, and her own hubris. The opening sequence of The Philadelphia Story represents a microcosm of the dynamic between the two protagonists Tracy Lord and C.K. Dexter Haven, played by Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Through the use of costume and music, the opening sequence operates as a means to aesthetically reveal narrative themes and character traits, while simultaneously setting up the disturbance that must be resolved.

The main reason for romantic tension in these two plays is because the two couples can’t be together like they want to be. There are many different aspects that create different quality of romantic tension in these two scenes. Although the two plays have similar plots, the romantic tension between the two lovers is very different because of the setting, the language and the circumstances in which the lovers face.
I attended the College of Arts lecture series where the film Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict was screened. The event was opened by Professor Marchi introduced the subject of Peggy Guggenheim to the audience and explaining the significance that Peggy Guggenheim has had on 20th century art. The film follows the story, chronologically, of Peggy Guggenheim through her life from a very young girl to the artist patron that she was known for all the way till her death. This film approaches the subject of this figure like a biography, by using interview segments of Peggy Guggenheim, pictures and interviews with different people who knew her intimately or studied her influence on the art scene. Her life was unique and astounding but also plagued with many tragedies and the movie works at uncovering each

The story is perfect and ties together all the parts of the actual play and what may have really happened to the life of Shakespeare. The writers produced an imaginative romantic comedy in the style of Shakespeare that is very believable. They bring the viewer along for a fictitious account of what may have motivated Shakespeare to write one of the greatest plays of all times. This film captures the coarseness and bawdiness of the period as well as its soaring poetry. It places Shakespeare’s world in a modern context and makes it accessible, without diminishing the impact of his words.

With many plot twists and many scenes that will have you falling off of your seat and you not having any nails by the end of the movie, this is the movie for you. "A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
