The Articles of Confederation
The colonists were living in a brand new country that had no track record. Considering that the articles of confederation had no precedent to follow, and no other government to imitate; the articles were fairly good. However, the Articles of Confederation could have been more effective than they were. Effective does not necessarily mean that the government was strong. It does mean that the government was able to provide the people with the kind of government they wanted and needed. Also, ineffective does not necessarily mean weak. The Articles were deliberately written for a weak central government, the colonists set it up they way they wanted to. Despite the fact that they one the revolutionary war, and they now realized that they were able to work together, they feared that a central government would cause each state to loose the civil rights which they have already gained. Therefore, the colonists deliberately made a weak central government. However, the kind of government which the people set up, through their own will created much uncertainty. The industrious people preferred security and quite and the government held too much uncertainty for them. It was the mid-late 1700s, and America had finally achieved and received independence from Great Britain. Peace in America on the other hand, not so much. After gaining independence, the Articles of Confederation were made as a system of government for the United States, but gave very imbalanced power between federal and state levels. For example, on the federal level, the national government couldn't force a state to pay taxes. To try to amend the Articles, in 1787, a meeting made up of delegates representing the states was called up, but instead, what would be created is what we now know as the Constitution. The Articles of Confederation was the nation’s first Constitution. The articles created a loose Confederation of independent states that gave limited powers to the central government. Each state would have one vote in the House of Congress, no matter the size of the population. Members of the one-house Congress, such as Pennsylvania, agreed that the new government should be a unicameral legislature, without an executive branch or a separate judiciary. Under the article, there wasn’t a strong independent executive.
The year of 1776 was a time of revolution, independence, and patriotism. American colonists had severed their umbilical cord to the Mother Country and declared themselves “Free and Independent States”.1 The chains of monarchy had been thrown off and a new government was formed. Shying away from a totalitarian government, the Second Continental Congress drafted a document called the Articles of Confederation which established a loose union of the states. It was an attempt at self-government that ended in failure. The Articles of Confederation had many defects which included a weak central government that lacked the power to tax, regulate trade, required equal representation and a unanimous vote to amend the Articles, and had only a legislative branch. As a result the United States lacked respect from foreign countries. These flaws were so severe that a new government had to be drafted and as a result the Constitution was born. This document remedied the weak points of the federal government and created one that was strong and fair, yet still governed by the people.
The Articles of Confederation were incapable of providing the United States with an effective form of government. The Articles of Confederation presided weakly over the government as it allowed little or no power to tax, control trade, and branches of government were missing. In addition to this, the thirteen states acted as separate nations and the national government had little control over them.
The Articles of Confederation was the first government of the United States. The Articles had created a very weak national government. At the time the Articles were approved, they had served the will of the people. Americans had just fought a war to get freedom from a great national authority--King George III (Patterson 34). But after this government was put to use, it was evident that it was not going to keep peace between the states. The conflicts got so frequent and malicious that George Washington wondered if the “United” States should be called a Union (Patterson 35). Shays’ Rebellion finally made it evident to the public that the government needed a change.

It is imperative that a sleep disorder is treated because an early treatment can prevent a drastic problem in the future. There are several options or paths to take when dealing with a sleeping disorder. However, options depend on the severity of the sleep disorder. These options include changing sleeping patterns, use of machines, and medication. Initially, home remedy treatments are enough to achieve a better night’s sleep. A simple position change while sleeping can be enough to stop snoring. An addition of a second pillow or changing the room temperature to a suitable level may be the missing piece to stay asleep throughout the night. Withhold eating food two hours before bed helps prevent a digestive system upset that may occur in the middle or beginning of sleep. Individuals do not have to deal with a sleep disorder alone, family members or bed partners identify the signs as well (Living with Sleep Apnea 1). Having the emotional support from loved ones can make the process of dealing with a disorder easier. Treatment for a severe sleep disorder can much more extensive and expensive. For individuals with sleep apnea, a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine is available with a prescription. This machine is put on the face as a mask and thus raises the pressure of air in the throat, providing an opening for the airway and fortunately a better sleep.

It occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted while sleeping. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing 100’s of times while sleeping. This causes the brain and the body not get enough oxygen. There are two types of sleep apnea, obstructed sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. Obstructed sleep apnea is the most common of the two, where there is a blockage in the airway. Central sleep apnea is not caused by a blocked airway, but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breath due to the instability in the respiratory control center. Who is at risk? Males that are 40 and over weight, that have a large neck, tonsils, tongue and a small jawbone and have a family history of sleep apnea are affected. If sleep apnea is left untreated can cause major health problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, heart problems, depression and headaches. If sleep apnea is mild, it can be treated with weight loss and change of sleep positions. The CPAP, continuous positive airway pressure is a treatment in which a mask is worn over the nose or mouth while you sleep. It has a mask that is hooked up to a machine that sends a continuous flow of air to the nose. It is the most common treatment for sleep apnea. Dental devices can be made and surgical procedures can be done depending on the case. I have seen how sleep apnea effects my father-in-law and the struggles he has had with it.
