The Apostle Robert Duvall

Robert Duvall movie, “The Apostle” is about a preacher named Sonny, or later on in the movie E.F, bringing a small town a voice of god and building a church while trying to lay low from the cops. Sonny grew up in a town in Louisiana, and moved to Texas where he became one of the most known preachers. He had a wife and two kids, and everything was looking good until one night he discovered that his wife was cheating on him. Later on she tells him that she wants out of the marriage then right after, the church told him not to preach at the church no more. Sonny is outrage with all the events that happen and tries to take his family by force in his kids little league game, but somebody tries to break it up and Sonny hits him with the baseball bat killing him. Sonny runs away back to Louisiana. He starts a new life and brings a church to the town. He found another woman, while she was still married, and back to being a preacher. He notice

that history was repeating itself when he saw the woman eating food with her husband and kids, so Sonny decides that he should not be the one to disband the family. He turns himself in to the police after one more service in his church. Sonny is a charismatic, jolly, and aggressive person that everybody can love him. He is able to stand his ground and fight for the things he believes in, but as he was closer to the light, his shadow grew.
Sonny is the main character in the movie, and he is a dynamic character but very complex in the beginning.

He is a typical old guy. Balding a little bit while wearing a button up shirt tucked in his khaki pants, but when he is in church doing service then he is wearing a fancy suit, either white or gray. Sonny became charismatic because he grew in Louisiana, and the church he went to was filled with energy, excitement, and shouting. He took that charisma to Texas and became one of the best preachers because he is able to draw in a crowd. When he went back to Louisiana and somebody was trying to knock down his church, but he used his charisma in a charming way to convince the person not to. Sonny is a lovable guy and treats everybody with the same respect, but that does not mean he will not fight back. He even uses his charisma whenever he fights, and he even killed a person in the beginning of the movie. Throughout the movie he was able to become more sympathetic and able to control his charisma a little

better.
Sonny was thinking in the beginning in the movie that he could do no wrong, and that everything he have earned was his and it was only for him. When his wife left him and the church removed him, he thought he did not deserve it because he was the voice of god and he did nothing wrong. After he killed the man and found a small town in Louisiana, the minor characters helped him relies that he is like everybody else. He also relies that he was about to break up a family like his was back in Texas, and that the only person that is hurting him, is himself. He did not want to become the antagonist, so in the end he became a tragic hero. During the whole movie, Sonny was fighting himself. The scene where he is stopping the guy from destroying the church, he notice that people needs to come to terms with the demons that is hurting him.
The movie is real good of showing that everybody has skeletons in their closet. It also illustrates that a religion is strong because of the people. The movie also shows that people can easily be blind by their own fame. Throughout the movie, Sonny character developed and the end shows him confronting his mistakes and taking the punishment. The other priest told Sonny that he was going be behind him even with mistakes that Sonny has done. So did the other people that was in his church saw past his wrong doing in Texas. Sonny saw that what he did for the people in Louisiana was the right people for him. The people in Texas only wanted Sonny to bring people in the church.
