In 1837, in a speech given by Ralph Waldo Emerson called the “ American Scholar “ he made a remark about books. He stated, “ Books are the best of things, well used; abused among the worst.” Within this quote, he stated the importance of book within a society, about its use and impact. However, he spoke about the subject in a very distinct manner, causing the rise of many ideas and interpretation of the quote. To a certain extent this quote is true, books are one of the best tools that one can utilize to do almost anything when it is used properly. Otherwise, it can cause the rise of different useless ideas and at times also cause the misdirection of a population. It is safe to say that everyone in the entirety of this world cannot share 100 percent of their belief and feeling of everything they experience and also seen, now this contribute as to why different people can get different perception of the same thing. Now lets look back at the start of the Christianity with the Bible. However there are period is time where the use of book is not of significance, where it was not used to gain any sorts of ideas or input in any aspect their life. Back within the days of hunting and gathering, the use of letters to keep a memory across the centuries to come and also to spread their ideas was not yet to be invented, they live on a simple aspect of necessity. They do what they need to do to stay alive and that was it everyday, They were happy and satisfied with what they had. They did not have an idea and belief that they can misinterpret and not understand causing them to do action against their will or not within their intention. The future is also a threat to book, the availability of information at the tip of your finger also reduce the need for books. Often times, our action is just based on what is around us, what is happening is what shaping the nation. For example, the presidential election, It is highly probable that there are many people in America that is oblivious to the fact regarding Donald Trump. However the society around them shaped who they are supporting, this is because of social media such as, Facebook, youtube, twitter, and also many social media sites that is out there. The people that knows what is up just solely trigger their friends to have the same feeling about the topic that they feel eager about. This is how books
Books today are everywhere. We find them in many households, libraries and schools all around the globe. We find many different types of books; from stories to educational textbooks, we regard them today as sources of knowledge and amusement. But it wasn’t the case before 1455. That year, one of the greatest inventions in human history was revealed to the world; Gutenberg’s printing press. This press allowed printing in massive quantity, spreading books all around Europe and the rest of the world at a fast rate. The printing press had many positive consequences on society. At first, it standardized grammar and spelling, and then introduced the mass production of books. It finally inspired future printing technologies around the world.
Bradbury attacks loss of literature in the society of Fahrenheit 451 to warn our current society about how literature is disappearing and the effects on the people are negative. While Montag is at Faber’s house, Faber explains why books are so important by saying, “Do you know why books such as this are so important? Because they have quality. And what does the word quality mean? To me it means texture. This book has pores” (79). Faber is trying to display the importance of books and how without them people lack quality information. In Electronics and the Decline of Books by Eli Noam it is predicted that “books will become secondary tools in academia, usurped by electronic media” and the only reason books will be purchased will be for leisure, but even that will diminish due to electronic readers. Books are significant because they are able to be passed down through generation. While online things are not concrete, you can not physically hold the words. Reading boost creativity and imagination and that could be lost by shifting to qui...
I began to read not out of entertainment but out of curiosity, for in each new book I discovered an element of real life. It is possible that I will learn more about society through literature than I ever will through personal experience. Having lived a safe, relatively sheltered life for only seventeen years, I don’t have much to offer in regards to worldly wisdom. Reading has opened doors to situations I will never encounter myself, giving me a better understanding of others and their situations. Through books, I’ve escaped from slavery, been tried for murder, and lived through the Cambodian genocide. I’ve been an immigrant, permanently disabled, and faced World War II death camps. Without books, I would be a significantly more close-minded person. My perception of the world has been more significantly impacted by the experiences I've gained through literature than those I've gained
it?s also the most influential? (West, 43). Reading books gives people a sense of what

Having no books means that there is no choice, or imagination to create your own choice. There is no creativity, and without creativity, there is no “between the lines meaning” about words. When you speak, you learn to speak clearly and never ever lie. Children are taught at a young age the significance of correct language, and there are no secrets because no one may lie, even on accident. There is a void where all those should be, a part missing from their lives that cannot be replaced because they don’t know how to replace it. Words have no real meaning because they can’t read them in a context that is meaningful to them. They have no idea what it is like to discover a whole second meaning for the words that have had only one clear meaning so everyone knew precisely what you were saying. Writing is also not a huge option because the people in charge of the community fear that it will be used to convey a hidden message or create plans and give people dangerous
To many people books are just words on paper, but to others books represent a way of living. The books help citizens make choices on daily activities and help discover what knowledge to pass on to others. Books help a culture or society improve and grow in multiple ways. The words that are printed onto the pages of a story affects individuals, education, and culture as a whole. Since books affect all of those groups, it is hard to imagine a world without them. How different would life be with all the changes in the groups where books have affected them?
If people were asked to define the importance of the books they would probably state that books are dead or will be dead soon. In “books a dying are? don’t believe it”, Anne Proulx expressed her views books. She suggests “every other week someone says that books are dead or dying”. By analyzing which will focused on a meaning, a form and the style of the essay well reveal that books are not on the way to extinction.
Technology has become an increasingly advanced as well as an important aspect in modern society. That is why Ray Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451, was right to fear books and other printed sources would be replaced by modern technology. Technology has contributed to the significant loss of time children spend reading. Additionally, eBooks have replaced print books. Moreover, television and radio have replaced newspapers as the dominant source of information.
Literature has had a major impact on society, and, also our history. Literature has reformed and shaped civilizations, changed political systems, and has exposed injustices (3). Our literature has changed and developed as we have, keeping up with our society. “...literature is crucial for the advancement of society (3).” With literary works, we can convince others to view things a certain way, share our opinions, and more. Literature is greatly intertwined with our society and everyday lives, and they would not be the same without it. Literature plays an irreplaceable role in our
Education was always thought to be a vital tool to all people, but in today’s world many consider it a way for the evils of the world to tant the young. This of course is known as the “Banned Books” debate. One side that believes books should be limited to prevent the children to be exposed to information that they believe to be inappropriate. And the other that believes in the total opposite and continues to point out the importance of the primary focus of literature, in which is education. Overall what makes this debate so difficult is the fact of what makes literature so valuable to the future generations, in being: at the end of the day education is a natural right given to every American citizen, they provide valuable lessons, and of course
Books provide material and information that contribute to man’s intellectual development. But what is it that books provide that exercise our brains? Books provide ideas, skills, facts and different ways of interpreting things, as well, they expand our vocabulary. Books help humanity to expand their knowledge. At the same time, nature is a factor that can also contribute in providing knowledge to humanity. The poem “Expostulation and Reply” expresses how nature can be a better factor in providing wisdom than the wisdom obtained from books.
Literature has many purposes, and opens doors to unique worlds. Through Literature, we discover ourselves and world time and again.
Have you ever wondered why literature has become what it is today? Why people started to write literature in the first place, and why readers where so motivated about books? Philosophy, the word itself is not as complex as its meaning, but so is literature. Philosophy is a study that seeks answers to enduring questions about existence and reality. The aim of this curiosity for more is the sole purpose to discover the nature of truth and knowledge, finding what is life and its meaning. Philosophy not only examines nature and life, but also humanity as an individual and humanity as a society. These examinations intrigues not only the writers, but also the audience as well, for the reason that philosophy arises from pure wonder, curiosity, and the desire to know and understand, which is what people look for in literature. Philosophers who marked philosophy as it is are, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. These three great philosophers had their own individual judgment, but they all had a common objective, to expand their knowledge and views through the use of literature. As philosophy grew among society and extended throughout the world, people were developing logical reasoning, which became important and influential throughout nations such as Greece and India. Philosophers such as John Locke and Voltaire were the two leading figures in the Enlightenment to provide philosophical literature. Ancient philosophers and enlightenment philosophers both provided the readers a subjective view, using as examples matters such as logic and ethics, but with many more aspects of philosophy also presented by these men of thought. Throughout the years, the inclusion of philosophy has changed literature itself with the rise of curiosity and reasoning,...
In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s well-known essay, “The American Scholar,” he addresses that there are three influences on the education of a thinking man: nature, the past and books, and action. This raises the question of “What education route is the most beneficial to young scholars?” Out of Emerson’s three educational views, the most beneficial way of teaching would be by using the past and books. The “sluggard intellect of this continent,” (paragraph 1) is from the academic teachings built upon gossip and personal views of the educator. The influence of the past and literature not only avoids this by “transmuting life into truth” (paragraphs 12-22), but also shows what is learned today and also what was learned or thought many years ago.
