Everyone has dreams of being successful in life. When the word American comes to mind one often thinks of the land of opportunity. This dream was apparent with the first settlers, and it is apparent in today’s society. In F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby (1925), he illustrates the challenges and tragedies associated with the American dream. By examining Jay Gatsby, Tom Buchanan, and Myrtle Wilson through the narrator Nick Carraway, I understand the complex nature of the American dream. Jay Gatsby represents the cost complex of them all.
The American Dream There is no set definition to be found anywhere of the true meaning of The American Dream. Any hope, dream, or goal pursued by anyone in the history of America is an American Dream. In modern times the accepted dream seems to be 2.5 children, a house with a white picket fence, and a perfect spouse. However, as it is shown throughout literature from the early days of America to contemporary times, the American Dream is not always so simple a concept. America was originally founded on the dream of freedom.
For five years, Gatsby was denied the one thing that he desired more than anything in the world: Daisy. While she was willing to wait for him until after the war, he did not want to return to her a poor man who would, in his eyes, be unworthy of her love. Gatsby did not want to force Daisy to choose between the comfortable lifestyle she was used to and his love. Before he would return to her, he was determined to make something of himself so that Daisy would not lose the affluence that she was accustomed to possessing. His desire for Daisy made Gatsby willing to do whatever was necessary to earn the money that would in turn lead to Daisy’s love, even if it meant participating in actions...
He tried to obtain wealth through hard work but when that failed, he pursued a life of underground crime. Jay only had one goal in life, and he was not going to let anything or anyone get in his way. He was born into a dirt-poor, farming family. As a young boy, Jay, also known as James Gatz, was well disciplined and worked hard to become a better person. As a young man, Jay signed up to fight in World War I. During training he met a rich girl named Daisy who was going to change his life forever. He quickly fell in love with her, but he knew that he was not wealthy enough to marry into such an upscale family. Instead of attempting to make a great and successful life for himself, he worked diligently trying to become a person he thought could be worthy enough to make Daisy happy. Daisy was a girl who was born into money and never worked for anything she had. Gatsby said, “Her voice is full of money.” She spoke as if she was royalty. For some reason, Gatsby thought if he worked hard enough and became rich, he could win her love. Jay Gatsby is the ultimate rags to riches story. He was not content with the person he was because who he really was could not get him the love he desired. He started talking and acting like an old rich friend he once worked for. Fitzgerald’s character Jay Gatsby from his book The Great Gatsby, was very much in love with luxurious life .That is why in his early childhood he left St.Olaf’s College because he had to work as a janitor there to pay his tuition fees. It would not be wrong to say he hated poverty from his early life. This could be his main reason to feel attracted towards Daisy Buchanan, who was a symbol of beauty and class. During Gatsby’s military training he met Daisy and the two fell in love with each other. Though Daisy promised to wait for Gatsby yet married Tom Buchanan ,while Gatsby was studying in Oxford .Gatsby took his rejection seriously and made his aim to achieve Daisy. He started involving himself in illegal work to earn money and started throwing mysterious parties to show off his money and social status .The main motive behind all these was not his greed or revenge but it was all for Daisy, whom he thought to be the love of his life. According to Gatsby his love for Daisy was very innocent and it did not even matter to him that Daisy was married to someone else. He perceived Daisy as a symbol of purity and innocence and wanted to have her at any cost. The main mistake of Gatsby was he mistook his obsession for Daisy as love and also he wanted to erase their past separation from their life by dint of his new money. " Fitzgerald also seems to be problematizing the inevitability of the text’s ending: Gatsby “turn[s] out all right’’
Through his lifestyle, he creates an alternate reality that fits his imagination and his own “American dream”. Jay Gatsby has been chasing the American Dream since his childhood, and his romanticism leads him to obtain high status and a false sense of life. He eventually purses Daisy’s love, blinding him from the reality of the world, which ultimately shatters his dream. Early in his life, Jay Gatsby (originally named James Gatz) aspires to change from a poor Midwesterner to a man of high status. Nick describes Jay Gatsby’s confrontation with Dan Cody as he states, “to the young Gatz, resting on his oars and looking up at the railed deck, the yacht represented all the beauty and glamour in the world” (96).
Jay Gatsby believes that wealth and power can lead to love and happiness. He spends his entire life trying to create himself and change his past so that he can rekindle his love affair with the love of his life Daisy Buchanan. The two were young lovers, unable to be together because of very different social statuses. After Gatsby learns that he cannot be with Daisy because of this, he spends the rest of his life attempting to acquire wealth and power.

“‘I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I’m not in either one now,’” said Jay Gatsby as he tries to avoid his past (50). Gatsby was a man of secrets and dishonesty; he believed that he need not tell anyone about his past or his present because he wanted to show everyone he knew how to live a luxurious life. To the few he did tell about his past, he withheld a respectable amount of information and twisted the truth. Gatsby was very good at keeping everything secret. He figured out a way to persuade people into making certain things occur. He seemed very content in having everything go his way and if it did not, he would try his best to see if he could change what had happened.
