The Aleppo earthquake of 1138 is considered to be the 3rd deadliest recorded earthquake ever according to NBC news. Aleppo suffered extensive damage and it is estimated that over 230,000 people died.
History:
On October 10, 1138 in the city of Aleppo north of Syria a small quake shook the Aleppo region. Residents of the area fled to surrounding towns because of the first quake. The Aleppo earthquake of 1139 was felt 220 miles away to the south and was the beginning of two intense sequences of earthquakes. The first sequence occurred on October 1138-June 1939 which affected the areas of Aleppo and the west part of Edessa which is part of Turkey today. The second sequence occurred from September 1139-May 1139 and this affected an area that includes north-west Syria and north part of Lebanon.
Records:
The only records about this earthquake that remain since the 12th century are chronicles recorded a person from Damancus that states that the earthquake resulted from a small earthquake in October 10, 1189 and was followed by the large earthquake the following day on October 11, 1189. However another person recorded that there was only one earthquake that occurred between October 19-October 20 which contradicts Damancus records of the earthquake. Today historians support that the earthquake did happen and that is either occurred on October 10th or October 11th, but lean more to it occurring October 11th.
The Aleppo earthquake is one of the least recorded earthquakes of all time. Magnitude of the earthquake is said to range from a 7.6-8.5 in the Richter scale.

The city of Aleppo is located in the north part of the Dead Sea Transform system of geologic faults. These geologic faults are place boundaries that separate the African pl...

... disputed natural disasters as of today since dates and casualty numbers are not exact. Few details about the earthquake are available and everything that has been recorded has different information that makes the Aleppo earthquake a natural disaster that is highly disputable.
If this earthquake occurred in this era in the same exact location it is very likely that it will cause huge damage since the structures of the homes in the area are weak. People in Syria don’t seem to take action to avoid future damage and deaths. One of the things I noticed as I wrote this report is that there is not much evidence or sources that talk about this particular disaster, most websites and book sources mention the Aleppo earthquake in no more than 1 page of information. All the sources I found describe the exact same information as if it was plagiarize from the same exact source.
In 1910 a series of fifty-two earthquakes struck Arizona between September 10th-23rd and it caused much of the Flagstaff residents to flee the area as even strong households cracked and chimneys crumbled. The fifty-two earthquakes were all light-shock earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.0-4.2 that came right after another. If only one earthquake occurred in that timespan then it is likely that only objects would be knocked from shelves but no damage would be done to infrastructure, but the earthquakes happened right after another causing significant slight
Earthquakes, by Webster’s dictionary definition, are, “a shaking or trembling of the earth that is volcanic or tectonic in origin.” World Book Encyclopedia reports scientists believe that more than 8,000 earthquakes occur each day without causing damage. A little more than 1,000 each year are strong enough to be felt. Earthquakes occur in the general sense, anywhere on land. Other earthquakes go by different names, such as volcanic eruptions and tsunamis, large tidal wave storms that occur underwater, primarily in the Pacific Ocean.
On the night of April 18, 1906, the whole town was woken by erratic shaking. Although the earthquake lasted under a measly minute, it caused significant damage. Many fires started all throughout the city; San Francisco burned in turmoil.
The San Francisco Earthquake commenced at five thirteen o’clock in the morning, with the epicenter offshore of San Francisco. The city carried more than 400,000 people during this event (Earthquake of 1906, 1). Most of the
Many people, the government, and other countries helped the city of San Francisco with relief goods like food and clothing. The city used up their resources in order to rebuild the city and spent a lot of money. This earthquake also started a scientific revolution about earthquakes and their effects. 1906 SF Earthquake’s Geological Aspects On the morning of April 18, 1906, around 5:12 am, the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake happened.
The maximum perceived intensity for the earthquake was IX on the Mercalli intensity scale. It caused severe damage and about 100 casualties in San Juan and the province of La Rioja, and also minor damages in Catamarca, Córdoba, San Luis and Mendoza, up to 500 km away from the
Earthquakes have been recorded throughout history for thousands of years. Even before seismographs in early times, there are records and accounts of mysterious ground shaking. Earthquakes occur when rocks break along an underground fault (UPSeis, 2007). This, in return, causes vibrations through the earth which causes ground shaking. The magnitude of the shaking varies depending on how great the movement along the fault is; the greater the movement, the bigger the earthquake. Some earthquakes are huge and cause significant damage, while others are small and cause little or no damage what-so-ever. Earthquakes are unpredictable, and can happen at any time. It is uncertain where an earthquake will strike, but there is a greater risk of an earthquake for areas lying on or near a fault. No one is ever prepared for an earthquake, so the people affected must face a sometimes terrifying reality and can be scarred for life. One country in particular that has been severely affected from an earthquake is Italy. Over a century ago Messina, a city located in Sicily, was to face one of the most devastating natural events of the century.
The harm that came from the earthquake was harsh and most everything was destroyed. Buildings collapse, people died, and landslides occurred, trapping everyone hopelessly in the zone where the
Some of the largest earthquakes in America’s history have come from the New Madrid Fault. All of these earthquakes happened in the Mississippi Valley, and yet were felt across the East Coast. Not only were these earthquakes large, but there were also many, with over 2,000 earthquakes recorded in the central Midwest, and 6,000-10,000 earthquakes recorded in the Bootheel of Missouri, all within the timespan of 4 months. 3 of these many earthquakes are still on the list of the United States’ largest earthquakes: the first large earthquake had a magnitude of 8.1 on December 16 1811; the second had a magnitude of 7.8, and the third had a 8.8 magnitude. These large earthquakes also had a large impact on the community and the environment, causing
According to the writers of Encyclopedia Britannica, the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and fire caused 28,000 buildings to be destroyed, causing $350,000,000 in damage. This earthquake was one of the most devastating earthquakes ever. There are many views on this earthquake, and even some footage of it. The earthquake caused the fire, which was even more devastating than the earthquake itself, but they both still did a substantial amount of damage. Over 3000 people were killed, 250,000 left homeless, and the survivors camped in Golden Gate Park or Dunes West, and some fled to neighboring towns. (Encyclopedia Britannica). The eyewitness accounts “Comprehending the Calamity” by Emma Burke and “The Horrific Wreck of the City” by Fred Hewitt are both about the 1906 San
However, this quake was strong enough that even many sturdy buildings collapsed. The fact that Haiti had no reliable first responder system, such as police, fire, EMS, only made matters worse. Because of situations such as these, many lives were lost that would not have been had the earthquake happened elsewhere.
It was known as the great Alaska earthquake. On March 27, 1964, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 struck the Prince William Sound region of Alaska. This earthquake is the second largest earthquake ever recorded in the world, the first as a magnitude 9.2 in Chile in 1960. In other words, this earthquake released 10 million times more energy than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima Japan. Equally important, this (Abby Lautt) earthquake produced landslides and caused catastrophic damage covering an area of 130,000 square kilometers, which is the entire state of Alaska, parts of Canada and Washington. The earthquake lasted approximately four minutes with eleven substantial after shock occurring over the next 24hrs causing damages in the amount of almost $400,000 and killed 131 people.
An earthquake occurs abruptly and causes severs damage to people, property, landscape and more. A great mega-thrust earthquake, known as the Great Tohoku Earthquake has shaken Japan at 5:46:24 UTC on March 11, 2011. It caused a severe disaster, including tsunami and nuclear radiation exposure.. This mega-quake located at the latitude 38.297 degree North and longitude of 142.372 degree East, near the east coast of Honshu, Japan (USGS, 2013). An earthquake and tsunami waves caused widespread damage to many areas of Japan. People in Japan are still recovering from the damages.

Earthquakes belong to the class of most disastrous natural hazards. They result in unexpected and tremendous earth movements. These movements results from dissemination of an enormous amount of intense energy in form of seismic waves which are detected by use of seismograms. The impact of earthquakes leaves behind several landmarks including: destruction of property, extensive disruption of services like sewer and water lines, loss of life, and causes instability in both economic and social components of the affected nation (Webcache 2).
