The Adventurous Character Tom in Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer The needle pricked the finger to let the blood drip on to the peace of pine shingle to finalize the oath that was to keep them "mum" (76) about the murder they had just witnessed. Mark Twain's book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1985) takes place in the mid 1800's and tells the adventures of Tom Sawyers adventures. The adventures started out with Tom and his friend, Huckleberry Fin, sneaking out and accidentally being witnesses to a murder. They then promise to never tell a word of it. Throughout the book they forgot about the murder and decide to go and play pirates and search for gold, but a trial about the murder finally comes, and it is haunting Tom because an innocent person, Muff Potter, is about to be executed. Tom opens his mouth to tell who the murderer was and then both Tom and his friend are in danger of being the next victims, but fate catches up with the murderer and he starves in a cave when the door is locked shut. The novel's finale is Tom and Huck finding the chest of gold, which made them both prosper with wealth. Throughout the novel, Twain uses a great approach to making the novel a very good read because of the fascinating characterization of Tom Sawyer. The dominant techniques that Twain uses to characterize Tom as an adventurous young man are his appearance, his thoughts, what others think of him, his actions, and his speech. Tom's appearance is the first element that enhances his character. His appearance is always changing. Tom starts most days looking like a cleaned up young man in nice clothes, but it usually never failed that through Tom's adventures of his rough play, fighting, mischief or swimming his clothes would end t... ... middle of paper ... ...t example because if a person were in a fight they wouldn't say "You say enough when you have had enough." The use in the story makes it more realistic. Another good example of Tom's speech is when he was talking about the money that the robbers had got. He said, " 'Tain't a dream, then, 'tain't a dream! Twain did a very good job of characterizing Thomas Sawyer. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is about a boy maturing from a whimsical troublemaker into a caring young man. In the "conclusion" Mark Twain writes, "It being strictly a history of a boy, it must stop here; the story could not go much farther without becoming a history of a man" Tom is now maturing throughout a span of adventures in love, treasure, and everyday life that make him more of an adult, then a boy.

In ch.4 of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, a judge comes to Tom’s religious school and tries to get the students attention by saying, “Now, children, I want you all to sit up just as straight and pretty as you can and give me all of your attention for a minute or two. That’s the way good little boys and girls should do.” When writing this, Twain has demonstrated his satire against religion and the church.
Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.

Further, Argyris (1953) describes a budget as a measuring instrument, which sets goals which mean that people can be measured in this way (Argyris, 1953). For supervisors, budgets can be a way to put things in writing, and thus vent other unrelated issues (Argyris, 1953). Mark Twain is world renowned for his authentic portrayal of southern dialect. Twain’s phonetic spelling of words, such as “genuwyne” rather than “genuine” and “swaller” instead of “swallow,” communicated the southern way of speech of his diverse characters in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Twain 54-78). He breathed life into his characters and gave them personality through his style and word choice. For example, Aunt Polly’s diction differed significantly from that of Huck Finn’s, and this hinted at the education, age, and gender of each character. Variations in the dialogue of characters and narration evoked a wide range of emotions as well as completed the imagery of each character and scenario. Additionally, the language of each character was kept consistent, realistic, and natural. Twain’s convincing prose distinguished him from the decorous authors of that time who wrote with acute formality.

Huck decides that Jackson island would be a good place to go. He knows his way around the island, knows that almost nobody goes there, and it’s big enough to sustain him. The river is a huge part in the story as Twain uses it for a scene of “romance”. This is, and always will be a big part of Huck’s evolution into the archetypal hero. Once Huck arrives on the island, it is time for huck to truly find out his place in society, and find his own ways from society’s grasp. Just as Huck thinks he is alone on the island, it turns out that Jim has run away from his owner, Miss Watson. Huck actually goes up to Jim with a gun, until he realizes who he is. Jim is quite scared at the start, as he believes Huck is dead, so he thinks that this figure in front of him is Huck’s ghost. “Doan’ hurt me—don’t! I hain’t ever done no harm to a ghos’. I alwuz liked dead people, en done all I could for ‘em,”(Twain 41). Although Huck does have an opportunity to be like Tom here, and pretend he really is a ghost, the reader sees Huck resist the urge to be a jokester. Huck tells Jim immediately that he is not truly dead. Now the reader sees a Huck vs. society battle, while Jim is hesitant to tell Huck
Jim also showed courage. When Jim decided to escape from slavery he did so at the risk of his own life. Jim showed the effort and courage it took to escape from slavery in the quote, "I laid dah under de shavins all day. I 'uz hungry, but I warn't afeared: bekase I knowed ole missus en de wider wuz goin' to start to de camp-meetn'"(Twain 56). Also, when Jim gave up his freedom to help the wounded Tom Sawyer, he showed the greatest act of valor in the novel. As the doctor who treated Tom Sawyer in the end of the novel stated, "I never see a nigger that was a better nuss or faithfuller"(Twain 354).
