The story of the death is told through “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Towards the end of the story the murder of Julia Stoner, Dr. Roylett, is killed by his own snake while attempting to kill Helen Stoner. to his death. “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” is told through karma by Dr. Roylett’s history of violence, plan to Helen, and the plan backfires. To begin with, Dr.
Roylett is known as a violent character and has many experiences of violent actions. At the beginning, he practiced his profession in Calcutta, India. There he lost his temper because of robberies taking place at his house and beat his butler to death. Because of his social status, he was able to escape a capital sentence and received a long imprisonment. Also, Dr. Roylett remarried Helen and Julia’s mother, Mrs. Stoner. After the death of Mrs. Stoner, she left her daughters some money when each get married. Later, Helen and Julia both moved to England with Dr. Roylett and became physically abused. Julia and Helen’s hair both whitened at a young age. Even Helen’s wrist was injured while visiting Sherlock Holmes. In the story, “... perhaps he hardly knows his own strength”(116). him. Soon after Julia’s death, two years later Helen planned to get married.
Dr. Roylett then devised a plan to kill her. His motive was to gain all the money that Mrs. Stoner left. The first step to his plan was to create a ventilator that goes through Julia’s and Dr. Roylett’s room. The next step was a fake bell rope created for the snake to crawl on. Then, Helen was moved to Julia’s room. The reason was Dr. Roylett gave to Helen was construction being done in the room. Dr. Roylett goes step by step to create a trap for Helen to fall in. At night, whistling sounds were made to lure the snake onto the bed. In the text, “I suddenly heard in the silence of night the low whistle which had been the herald of her own death”(116). Helen recalls the whistling sound was heard by her sister before her death. Some other clues were the final words Julia said which were the speckled band. In order to, cover that he may have been a suspect other animals and people were involved. Dr. Roylett allowed a band of gypsies to stay on his property and kept wild animals from India. To summarize, Dr. Roylett is guilty of planning to kill Helen and will be paid with
karma. Next, Dr. Roylett almost succeeded his plan until it begins to backfire. Holmes and Watson are one of the main reasons why Dr. Roylett’s plan was ruined. Helen goes to Holmes for help, and they create a plan for Watson and Sherlock to hide in Julia’s room. When they are waiting, Holmes knows what it coming and has a cane in his hand. The snake enters the room through the rope. Suddenly, Holmes attacks the snake causing it to go back to Dr. Roylett’s room. As a result the snake comes back to bite Dr. Roylett. In the passage, “...the deadliest snake in India. He has died within ten seconds of being bitten” (131). Dr. Roylett is then declared dead and suffers the fate he wanted to give to Helen. Throughout Dr. Roylett’s life, he caused violence to others in the end violence came back to him. The death of Dr. Roylett began with his past violence, attempts to kill Helen for money, then eventually his plan backfires. Dr. Roylett causes violence in India when he kills his butler, abuses stepdaughters, and last but not least he threw a backsmith into a stream. Next, he created an elaborate plan to kill Helen. In the end, violence is returned to him as his plan backfires. The quote meaning is that the violence Dr. Roylett caused and back to him this is an example of karma. Dr. Roylett lost his life because of his violent actions. This did not affect Sherlock Holmes because Holmes feels he was not responsible, and Dr. Roylett caused his own death. In conclusion, Dr. Roylett’s death was because of his temper and violence.

to begin climbing in the first place. Chris McCandless was determined to not only go but to complete the climb as well. Furthermore, as Chris aged and entered high school, his rareness showed even more prominently. He became the captain of the cross-country team. He loved the role and concocted grueling training regimens that his teammates remember still well. “He was really into pushing himself,” recalls Gordy Cucullu, a former member of the team. “Chris invented this workout he called Road Warriors: he would lead us on long, killer runs through places like farmers’ fields and construction sites, places we weren’t supposed to be, and intentionally try to get us lost. We’d run as far and as fast as we could, down strange roads, through the woods, whatever. The whole idea was to lose our bearings, to push ourselves into unknown territory.

Everyone has a friend and deserves one. A friendship is to be with someone that trusts and believes in one. Everyone has a friend--except for Freak and Max. To begin, Freak and Max were two kids who have no friends. The reason being is that they both have disabilities. Freak has Morquio Syndrome which made him very small, and Max has Learning Disabilities and “was the size of a giant” which made people never open themselves up to Freak and Max. Those two didn’t really achieve anything until they became friends. In the realistic fiction novel, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick he told a compelling story about Friendship, determination, and imagination. I believe the theme of this novel of the book is if you put your mind into it, you can

The three events that mark Jane as an evolving dynamic character are when she is locked in the red room, self reflecting on her time at Gateshead, her friendship with Helen Burns at LoWood, her relationship with Mr. Rochester, and her last moments with a sick Mrs. Reed. Brought up as an orphan by her widowed aunt, Mrs. Reed, Jane is accustomed to her aunts vindictive comments and selfish tendencies. Left out of family gatherings, shoved and hit by her cousin, John Reed, and teased by her other cousins, Georgina and Eliza Reed, the reader almost cringes at the unfairness of it all. But even at the young age of ten, Jane knows the consequences of her actions if she were to speak out against any of them. At one point she wonders why she endures in silence for the pleasure of others. Why she is oppressed. "Always suffering, always browbeaten, always accused, forever condemned" (Bronte, 12). Jane’s life at Gateshead is not far from miserable. Not only is she bullied by her cousins and nagged by her aunt, but help from even Bessie, her nurse and sort of friend, seems out of her reach. In the red room scene Jane is drug by Ms. Ab...
“Even in the darkest hour, when all hope seems lost… there is light.” Tolkein. The story, Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, is about the a few survivors of WW2 who go on a long journey to get to the Wilhelm Gustloff. They end up meeting multiple people along the way and they all end up developing and changing along the journey. The families and children like Florian, Joana, Halinka, and Klaus that survived the “darkest hour” represent the future and the start of a new, better life. All of the characters that ended up surviving were driven by the need to create a future for the children and the need to be with their “family” they found along their journey.
At Lowood, she is thought of by many as a well behaved child, but she still occasionally resistances authority. This is the case when the nurse tells Jane that she may not visit Helen, even though Helen is very ill. Jane, believing that she needs to see Helen regardless of if she is allowed to or not sneaks off: “I dreaded being discovered and sent back; for I must see Helen- I must embrace her before she died- I must give her one last kiss, exchange with her one last word” (82). Jane’s behavior demonstrates her growth in independence. When she lived at Gateshead, she yielded to authority even when she believed it cruel; at Lowood, she defies the nurse’s authority because she knows her desire to see Helen again is greater than her fear of

“In moments of pain, we seek revenge”. This quote is something that does happen in certain events that humans go thru and it can influence a person to do things that they would never even think of doing. In certain cases regular people would actually kill someone because revenge seems to take over their mind. In the book A Necessary Evil, revenge is seen as a driving force in all the characters. Like the quote says, humans always feel the need for revenge when they are feeling pain. It is first seen in Michael Grey, when his wife is murdered and the man who killed her isn’t convicted, he feels an enormous sense for revenge. After hiring a hitman by the name Butch, Michael Grey regrets making his decision and decides to not pay butch the final
While at Lowood, a state - run orphanage and educational facility, Jane’s first friend, Helen Burns, teaches her the importance of friendship along with other skills that will help Jane grow and emotionally mature in the future. She serves as a role model for Jane. Helen’s intelligence, commitment to her studies, and social graces all lead Jane to discover desirable attributes in Helen. Helen is treated quite poorly, however, “her ability to remain graceful and calm even in the face of (what Jane believes to be) unwarranted punishment makes the greatest impression on the younger girl” (Dunnington). Brontë uses this character as a way to exemplify the type of love that Jane deserves. This relationship allows Jane to understand the importance of having a true friend. Given Jane’s history at Gateshead, finding someone like Helen is monumental in her development as a person. Helen gives through honest friendship, a love that is
