Differences and similarities of two poems Two poems that are very different but at the same time are similar are “The Adventure of Juan Chicaspatas” written by Rodolfo A. Anaya in 1985 and “I am Juaquin” written by Rodolfo Corky Gonzales in 1967. These poems are different because one poem focused on the Chicano movement of the 1960’s in the United States, and the other poem focused on understanding the indigenous history of Mexicans. And Some similarities that these two poems have is that both are epic poems because both poems cover a wide geographic area and the setting is frequently set in the remote past, and because both poems contain a long catalog of important people who represent the cultural values of their race and nation. The poems “I am Juaquin” and “The Adventure of Juan Chicaspatas” have is that both are epic poems because both cover a wide geographic area and the setting is frequently set in the remote past. Juan Chicaspatas” AI Penco and Juan Chicaspatas talk about a place called Aztlan, Mexico. Aztlan is a legendary homeland that had seven desertic tribes, called Chichimecas. These desertic tribes have emerged from caves that were located at the heart of a sacred mountain far from the north of the valley of Mexico. This is an important place for Juan Chicaspatas and AI Penco because “this place is the origin of our Mexican ancestors, the spiritual birthplace of the Indio, the homeland of all Chicanos” (Anaya, P. 14). And in the poem “I am Juaquin” Juaquin start remembering some of the places that are important for all Mexicans because they are part of their history. Some of the places that he starts remembering were the mountains of San Juaquin, the Valle of San Luis, Chapultepec, and the Hills of the Alaskan isles. Another reason why these poems are epic it is because they contain a long catalog of important people who represent the cultural values of their race and nation.
In the poem “The Adventures of Juan Chicaspatas” some of the heroes that were mentioned are Malinche, La Virgen de Guadalupe, Hernan Cortez, Chris Colon, Emilio Zapata, Pancho Villa, Miguel Hidalgo, and many more. And in the poem “I am Juaquin” some of the heroes that were mentioned are Cortes, Nezahualcoyotl, Don Benito Juarez, Pancho Villa, Emilio Zapata, Francisco Madero, La Virgen de Guadalupe, Tonantzin, Juaquin Murrieta, Elfego Baca, and many others. All these people are important because each of them did something important that help change the history of Mexico. For example, Pancho Villa was as Mexican Revolutionary general and one of the most prominent figures of the Mexican revolution; Francisco Madero was a was a revolutionary figure and was the thirty third president in Mexico, and he was an advocate for social justice and
democracy. But in the other hand, these two poems are total different because one poem focused on understanding the indigenous history of Mexicans and the other poem focused on the Chicano movement of the 1960’s in the United States and the struggles that Chicano people face by trying to get some economic justice and equal rights in the United States. The poem that focused on understanding the indigenous history of Mexicans is “The Adventure of Juan Chicaspatas” and the poem that poem focused on the Chicano movement of the 1960’s in the United States and the struggles that Chicano people face by trying to get some economic justice and equal rights in the United States is “I am Juaquin”. In the poem “I am Juaquin” was the first poem that described the dilemma that Chicanos were facing with American culture while trying to keep their culture intact for future generations.
In a story of identity and empowerment, Juan Felipe Herrera’s poem “Borderbus” revolves around two Honduran women grappling with their fate regarding a detention center in the United States after crawling up the spine of Mexico from Honduras. While one grapples with their survival, fixated on the notion that their identities are the ultimate determinant for their future, the other remains fixated on maintaining their humanity by insisting instead of coming from nothingness they are everything. Herrera’s poem consists entirely of the dialogue between the two women, utilizing diction and imagery to emphasize one’s sense of isolation and empowerment in the face of adversity and what it takes to survive in America.
Author’s Techniques: Rudolfo Anaya uses many Spanish terms in this book. The reason for this is to show the culture of the characters in the novel. Many of the battles won were essential in the sense that it to applied pressure to the Mexican government. Without that pressure the revolutionaries would not have been victorious in their battles, proving Pancho Villa’s important role in the Mexican revolution.
Merriam- Webster online dictionary defines an epic hero as, “ A grand and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or effected by grand events.” The same dictionary also defines an epic poem as, “a story told about a hero or exciting events.” The Epic of Gilgamesh is often considered the oldest story on earth; which would make Gilgamesh, the story’s controversial main character, and the world’s oldest epic hero. This epic set a precedent for all epics to follow; it displayed most of the traits that society commonly perceives an epic hero and epic poem should have. The Epic of Gilgamesh exhibits tendencies of an epic poem through its inclusion of an epic hero, multiple gods and goddesses, and it’s vast array of settings across the world. Additionally, Gilgamesh presents attributes of an epic hero through his quest for immortality, his noble birth and his battles with superhuman foes.
...community, equal rights and the right to follow your roots) with the central focus of the poem. As Susan Bassnett states in her essay Bilingual Poetry: A Chicano Phenomenon , there is a “Latin American tradition of the poet who occupies a prominent place in the struggle for freedom and national unity”, and as Cervantes and Gonzales demonstrated, the poet’s role in Latin America has not been diminished.

Thus muses Achilles, one of epic poetry's greatest heroes. Epic poetry, one of the earliest forms of literature, began as an oral narration describing a series of mythical or historic events. Eventually, these stories were written down and read aloud to an audience. Although the Epic of Gilgamesh was composed approximately fifteen hundred years prior to the Iliad, the heroes of both epics possess strikingly similar characteristics. Indeed, Gilgamesh and Achilles, as epic heroes, exemplify godlike qualities, great personal power, and fierce pride and loyalty.
Julia Alvarez was an example of how a Latina writer identified herself in a new culture outside of her comfort zone. She, as a Dominican Diaspora, had to reinvent herself as she migrated into a new scenario. Her assimilation into the United States culture allowed her to understand and relate to the reader’s needs and points of interests. After all the effort, Alvarez kept in mind that she could not comfort to all the reality that she lived in, so she re-reinvented herself all over again to process her thoughts and beliefs into her life. She put her perspective on her writing so that the new wave of readers, even if they did not understand, could relate in some way and appreciate the differences. The sole purpose of her writings was for everyone to change their perspective from “walk to the other side of the street in order to avoid sharing the same sidewalk” to “I do not know them, but I do not avoid them because I do not know them”. She instilled in her reader’s mind how ordinary events were viewed differently through other cultures’ eyes. Her story Snow was a great example of how she portrayed her technique.

An epic is an extended narrative poem in elevated or dignified language, celebrating the feats of a legendary or traditional hero. The main characteristics of an epic as a literary genre is that it is a long poem that tells a story, it contains an epic hero, its hero searches for immortality (but doesn't find it physically, only through fame), gods or other supernatural beings are interested and involved, and it delivers an historical message.
