Thanks to the rapidly occurring advancements in technology, educational tools like school books and calculators can’t keep up with how quickly new information is gained. Cell phones on the other hand, can keep up with how fast new information is found. Students need and deserve a proper education. If cell phones were to be integrated into school systems, students would be able to have access to unlimited portable knowledge that they can use to better their education. This is understandable as most teenagers now a days would rather be on social media than anything else, but there is a simple way to solve this issue. Luckily, cell phones can block certain functions that distract students during class. There is a way to turn off social media and texting notifications so students are less tempted to the distractions. Another concern is that cell phones can be used to cheat on exams and quizzes. This issue can be solved easily, in order to prohibit students from cheating teachers can collect cell phones before a quiz or an exam. Students will try to cheat whether or not cell phones are allowed in schools, so there is no reason to use cheating as an excuse to not allow cell phones in schools. Technology has been slowly integrated into the classroom for many years now. Some may be older than others, but they have all seemed to make the learning and teaching process much easier and more effective. Computers were introduced to the curriculum to help students better understand data collection, research, and word processing, and Power Points were even added to give visuals to lessons. Cell phones on the other hand have been given the cold shoulder, and even completely banned by some schools. According to the article, “Are We Dialing Up Disaster,” by George Engel and Tim Green, eighty-four percent of high school students report owning a cell phone and that number continues to increase (Engel 39).
The scholarly article, “Invasion of the Classroom Cell Phones”, written by Marilyn Gilroy, discusses the controversial issue of the debate between the effects of cell phones and education. Marilyn Gilroy was a communication professor at the Bergen Community College for 18 years, and since 1992 has written multiple publications for the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. In “Invasion of the Classroom Cell Phones” Gilroy talks about the growing problem with cell phones and what the device is causing for students, parents, administrators, and schools everywhere, while also noting the inevitability of these handhelds in today’s society.

This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school's most easily accessible phone was on the other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could've used to contact the authorities more quickly. The issue we are addressing today is the use of cellular devices in educational facilities. I believe that cell phone use is of extreme convenience, and has academically beneficial aspects, among it's so called "faults".

Picture this, there has been a school lockdown, the suspect cut the landlines so no one could call the police for a rescue. However, the suspect was captured by the police much faster than he imagined. The last scene wouldn’t have happened if it was one decade ago, because cell phones were not popular in schools then.
