Research Methods
Research is a pathway which leads to more progression in our world, especially in the fields of medicine and psychology. Despite the need for progression, and the benefits it produces, research can be complex and in some cases damaging. Not every research method is beneficial in every form of study. This is why it is essential to carefully evaluate the gains and costs of each research method, including descriptive research and experimental research. In my essay I will be clarifying their definitions and exploring their strengths and challenges in greater detail.
Descriptive research offers a precise representation of characteristics of a specific person, situation or group. Descriptive research explains what exists, establishes

In both experiments, the experimenter influences the independent variable, and the dependent variable is used to determine the results. These experiments are used for discovering cause and effect relationships, and the experimenter usually has decent control over the conditions of the experiment (Craig & Dunn, 2013). The disadvantage of these experiments is that it can be difficult to control the independent variable of interest. When ethics are considered, this can be a disadvantage because it can restrict which research questions can be studied. It can also be costly because in order to determine the accuracy of a studies result, it needs to be replicated (Craig & Dunn, 2013). Typically experiments focusing on groups use the method of random assignment which assigns each participant arbitrarily, in order that the groups do not vary in significant ways. The quasi-experimental method can be more beneficial than typical group experiments, in circumstances where the independent variable cannot be randomly allocated (Craig & Dunn,
In response to the question set, I will go into detail of the study, consisting of the background, main hypotheses, as well the aims, procedure and results gathered from the study; explaining the four research methods chosen to investigate, furthering into the three methods actually tested.
There are many different factors to consider that play a part in experimental procedures. Without these variables, researchers would have a hard time making a claim about a particular topic, because they did not consider all sides of the experiment. An example of the variations done in experiments can be seen throughout Solomon Asch’s “Opinions and Social Pressure,”
Quasi-experimental designs are experimental designs that do not provide for the full control of extraneous variables. Primarily, the absence of control in this design is due to the lack of random assignment to groups. Quasi-experimental research designs are used in the study of cause and effect by manipulating the independent variable.
According to Neuman, there are three main research purposes: “Explore a new topic, describe a social phenomenon, or explain why something occurs. Studies may have multiple purposes, but one purpose is usually dominant” (Neuman, 2011, p. 38). These three types of research purposes are also known as; exploratory research, descriptive research and explanatory research (Neuman, 2011, p.
Experimental research is the one type of research that allows psychologists to make causal statements. It is where the researcher changes one or more variables that may have an effect on some other variables (King, 2016). The hypothesis is a specific expectation about what is going to happen in the experiment (King, 2016). In the research, the hypothesis was that women would perceive fat talk to be more socially acceptable than men (Katrevich et al., 2014). The other elements of experimental method are dependent and independent variables. The independent variable (IV) is the cause of the results, and it is changed by the experimenter to find the effects, but the dependent vari...
Research is defined as systematic investigation in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions (OUP, 2014). The biopsychosocial model has already been described.
Social Influence Research - Do the Ends Justify the Means? To what extent does the importance of social influence research, justify the methods used in its investigation? The debate about ethics in psychology focuses on two areas: protection of participants and benefiting society. This is a double obligation dilemma as if some psychologists are not allowed to do certain experiments because of ethical restraints; this can cause problems with validity.
Experimental psychology typically favours the idea that the individual acts as a self- contained unit. To use a study as an illustration, Milgram’s famous experiment regarding authority uses the experimental method. (Milgram, 1963 cited in Gibson, 2015) – participants were asked to press a buzzer of increasing voltage, and, the experimenter would respond to questions using a list of predetermined prompts to reduce their influence on participant behaviour. This was deemed enough to assume that the participant acted in complete autonomy, and results were therefore, for the most part,
In order to have a successful, reliable experiment you need sufficient data and evidence, reliable research, variables to test and a follow – up experiment. There are several types of variables you need to do an experiment. An independent variable is the manipulated experimental factor that is changed to see what the effects are. A dependent variable is the outcome. This factor can change in an experiment in reaction to the changes in the independent variable. An experimental group is the group of participants that are exposed to the change that the independent variable represents. The control group is participants who are treated in the same way as the experimental group except for the manipulated factor which is the independent variable (King 24). Proper data, evidence and research is also needed so the experiment turns out correctly and you know what you are testing. A follow – up experiment is not required, however it helps the validity of the conclusion of the experiment. Validity is “the soundness of the conclusions that a researcher draws from an experiment” (King 25). Conducting a follow – up experiment will help researchers and people alike see if the experiment worked properly, continues to help people and see how participants are doing after the experiment is over.
For nursing, research has played a major role in the way clinical practice is done. Research has allowed nurses to provide appropriate care to patients. It allows them to perform their job by providing them the tools and information they need in order to make the decisions on the concerns for caring the patient (Polit & Beck, 2006). Moreover, research can also take focus on the workers themselves in order to improve the practice both on a professional and personal level. An example of a study conducted by King, Vidourek, and Schweibert of University of Cincinnati created a study to determine if there is a correlation between ...
The articles, published after 1996, contain varied methods of research attainment, but share similarities such as being a self-survey, having a small sample size, and being
Like any other science, psychology is concerned with theories and data. Psychologists use a wide range of research methods and techniques that allow them to gather and make sense of the data that they produce. The methods that psychologists use to research and analyse the experience and behaviours of individuals or groups are called psychological research methods. This essay will be investigating and analysing three research methods to include; experimental, observational and surveys, also, reflecting on their strengths and weaknesses of each in addition to their usefulness in the psychology field.
Although their methods are not as up close and personal as those who study using the clinical method, they are certainly valuable. Experimental research is often regarded as the best form of research, due to its strict adherence to rigid research guidelines. Although neither of these two methods are infallible, each has its own merits and downfalls. In order to be best able to critique these methods one must have a general knowledge of each method, and an understanding of what has allowed them their staying power in the field of psychological research. The Clinical Research MethodThe clinical method of personality research developed literally at the patient’s bedside. During this time in the life of psychoanalytic research, the subjects were usually afflicted with one type of psychotic disorder or another.
The most significant feature of an investigative study is the precision and simplicity of the investigative problem. For a brief assertion, it definitely has a great deal of influence on the study. The statement of the problem is the central position of the study. The problem statement should affirm what will be studied, whether the study will be completed by means of experimental or non-experimental analysis, and what the reason and function of the results will bring. As an element of the opening, profound problem declarations satisfies the query of why the study should to be performed. The reason of this essay is to discuss the features of an investigative problem; in addition, the essay will center on what constitutes a researchable problem; the components of a well formed Statement of Research Problem; and, what constitutes a reasonable theoretical framework for the need of a study.
A qualitative based research this process is favored by those who seek an autobiographic account or historical. Narratives can give a tone and emotion to an era or event that quantitative research and some qualitative designs lack, such as the desperation that Paris, France felt went it was occupied by Nazi Germany (Sandelowski, 2000).
