History of 90s Video Games & My Perspective Corey Bates Bachelor’s Degree Argosy University Abstract My purpose of this paper is to talk about one of the greatest and mostly everyone’s favorite generation of video games which is the 1990’s. It’s important that we look back at how gaming changed the world during a rebellious time it’s was the 90’s good guys were out bad guys were coming in. Sony, Nintendo & Sega were in a war trying to see who the better console is. The console wars made the 90’s great so many games, so much entertainment being a kid was awesome. Once I finish talking about the history and explaining everything moment by moment and it’s importance, ill discuss my experiences as a gamer growing up in the 90s and just being a …show more content…
It’s also began the rise of certain genres of gaming from shooters to fighters and the debut of online gaming and playing games with your mobile or handheld devices. During the late 1980’s Sega’s Genesis was introduced as the leading console beating out Nintendo’s NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and becoming the number one gaming console in the world. Graphics on the Genesis made Nintendo’s console feel like it didn’t belong and it was the thing of the past so they need someone to lead the charge and created their own mascot and his name was Sonic. In early 1991 Sonic the hedgehog was made available for genesis users and everything changed no one wanted to play with a plumber who chased around for a princess Sonic became the new king in video game history. However over at Nintendo their system was not doing so well and needed an upgrade just before they can do an upgrade Sega once again dropped another bombshell Sonic 2 was on the way and was going to be better than first game and was going to be released in November of 1992. In the same year Nintendo released their upgrade the Super NES which came with Super Mario, Zelda and basically turned around Nintendo’s credibility but sadly when it came overseas no one was really buying anything Nintendo. During the early years of the 90’s gaming went through a rebellious change just like the time controversy was all of the rage so for these two games started one of the biggest moment’s in history. Mortal Kombat one of the greatest fighting games of all time and Doom another big fps game (First Person Shooter) became infamous because of the violent nature of both games which unfortunally people in congress didn’t like which all gaming companies had to comply with now the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) all games must have a rating E-M and even including Adults Only in recent years. Over the next years
During the 1990’s the video games were constantly changing. This decade saw tons of innovations in the gaming industry. The creation of 32-bit games and 3D games dominated the virtual world: Contra, Battletoads, Mortal Kombat, etc. Video game genres developed and branched out, creating some of the popular genres in video games today, such Role-playing games(RPGs), 3D platformers, first person shooters, etc. During this time, the industry was ruled by Nintendo and it’s President, Hiroshi Yamauchi, who ruled with an iron fist.
An examination of videogames in popular culture is a complicated one. There is a large debate as to what is the very first video game. The supposed earliest known video game was created by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann on a cathode ray tube in 1947. The game was a missile simulator similar to radar displays from World War II, and overlaid sheets of paper were used for targets since graphics were unknown at this time. On May 5, 1951, the NIMROD computer was presented in Britain. It used a panel of lights for its display and was used to play a game called “NIM”. Later, in 1952, Alexander S. Douglas made the first compu...

The 1980s were a different time period. People start getting better ideas and those ideas were advancing history. A major thing that was part of the 1980s were vehicles. Vehicles were people's transportation. Vehicles were advancing at that time in the 80s some of the first production car were being introduced to fuel injection. Cars were starting to evolve and high horsepower started becoming a factor as well. Movies were another big part of the 80s because graphics and actors were becoming better.
During the early 1980s, Atari was the number one video game company in America. Atari had prophesized that they would turn an extreme profit during the time between 1980 and 1985. When Steven Spielberg came to Atari in July of 1982 asking to make a game version of his famous movie E.T., Atari promised him millions of dollars in royalties—even if the game failed—and that they could make the game by September of that year—an impossible deadline. At Christmas, 1982, E.T. The Game released. By the end of 1983, Atari had lost over $500 million and Warner Bros. sold Atari that year—leaving many thinking it was due to E.T.’s commercial failure. It’s rumored that E.T. The Game was so horrible that Atari took all the returned copies of the game and dumped them in a landfill in the New Mexico desert. Obviously, cause for a mass game “burial”. According to the article, "Video Games and Children," by Bernard Cesarone, ever since the 1970?s, parents have been placing their children in front of televisions and allowed them to waste away the hours playing video games (31). As technology and a national surge in violent entertainment grows, so does the onset of violent video games.
The 1980’s, a remarkable decade that started from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 1989. The most significant events in the 1980’s was the Economic doings of “Reaganomics”, Social Movements of women’s rights, Foreign Affairs of the Cold War. Many other events were included like Science & Technology, Arts & Entertainment, and Politics.Admittedly, many would argue that the Economic, Social, and Foreign Affairs wouldn’t be the highlight of the 80’s but let’s take a look on why others might oppose to that thought.
A theme of In Cold Blood would be the importance of family. Family helps shape who you are as a person and your perspective of life- such as values and beliefs. The Clutter family was a warm, tight-knit, respectable family known to all. The Clutters were very religious and Herb would even exempt himself from social functions that did not seem to provide a “purpose.” “He did not smoke, and of course he did not drink; indeed, he had never tasted spirits, and was inclined to avoid people who had - a circumstance that did not shrink his social circle as much as might be supposed, for the center of that circle was supplied by the members of Garden City's First Methodist Church, a congregation totaling seventeen hundred, most of whom were as abstemious

Video games first appeared in the early 1970's. It all started with a simple white ball bouncing back and forth on the screen. In 1986, Nintendo introduced its first line of home video game consoles. With the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) on the market, the home video gaming industry surged and immediately became popular among children. Since then, not only have video games increased in popularity, but there have been vast improvements in graphics, game play, and forms of gaming.
Society in the 1980s saw games as distraction and a waste of time. Arcade games in 1981 were regarded as a reason for cutting classes. Children and the youth were banned from playing arcade games during school hours and past ten in the evening on weekdays, and past midnight on weekends. Laws against children playing in arcades during the banned hours were implemented in order to prevent further disturbances in their studies (Kent 152). Games to the people in the 1980s were merely forms of entertainment that brought about many video game addicts. However, in the early 1980s video game consoles and personal computers were globally popular. This was because most of the machines that had enough power to...
