In this class, the most significant lesson I have learned is that everything has two sides (positive and negative) including history. However, history is hard to know because it was the past period. Most people just could know from the textbook and school. Unfortunately, normally it just shows the right side for people or avoids telling the dark side to people, so it causes they got misunderstand the whole history. James W. Loewen states, “The authors of history textbooks have taken us on a trip of their own, away from the facts of history, into the realm of myth. They and we have been duped by an outrageous concoction of lies, half-truths, truths, and omissions; that is in large part traceable to the first half of the nineteenth century”(Lies …show more content…
However, from discussion three, I have learned that Thanksgiving is from Indian. I feel so ashamed that American took not only the land but also the culture. Before the black slave came to America, the Indian used to work with the low payment and the terrible environment. During the slave trade, American begun to take black slaves from Africa. That is true slaves bring booming economic America; however, it also lowed people morally. American perused the social hierarchy. They passed the law that slaves’ children are slaves, and the owner could do whatever they want even though killed or raped the slaves (Discussion 5). “To accomplish this there was the discipline of hard labor, the breakup of the slave family, the lulling effects of religion (which sometimes led to "great mischief," as one slaveholder reported), the creation of disunity among slaves by separating them into field slaves and more privileged house slaves, and finally the power of law and the immediate power of the overseer to invoke whipping, burning, mutilation, and death”(Zinn, 31) .Through this way, slaves hurt not only for bodies but also for souls. I have learned that the violent side Americans had. Even though they gathered a lot of money, I wonder what the moral dimension is for …show more content…
They gain the citizen and have their house through this period. Sadness, it was not true. A lot of immigrants came to America; they just got the low payment and hard work. A lot of people worked over twelve hours without resting. Most of them died for the work (Discussion 9).According to Howard Zinn, “ When it was over, 146 Triangle workers, mostly women, were burned or crushed to death”(A People’s History of the United States). It is just one case that people died by this accident. They could not escape because the company knocked the door to keep they working hard. In other words, they had the chance to survive, but the factory destroys this hope. During the World War II, I have learned that American begun to join the war is because Japan attacked American Pearl Harbor. And most of the Jews was killed during this war. Through discussion thirteen, I knew that the Asians and Africans also had been attacked. I also found the violent Vietnam war was not the necessary war, even though it began by America. I feel so happy that America stopped this war at the end because Americans against this terrible
“History never says goodbye. History says see you later” (Eduardo Galeano). History teaches us valuable lessons from the past, which can be used for the present time, yet our leaders usually overlook these lessons and repeat previous mistakes. I have recently immigrated to the United States and since in my home country history classes are not a place to really discuss the history, I was amazed by the way that this history class challenged every event and fact. I have learned that history is told by bias, so we should be able to think critically and question what we are taught. History is usually written by the dominant group of the society, so if we are looking for the truth, we should study each event from different resources and different
This is a disgrace! To all the turkey’s at Thanksgiving! forty-five million turkey’s are cooked a year. Not only are those awful humans eating us, now they are entrapping us in disgusting cages and making us eat only corn and soybeans. That’s not even the worst part, they put something in our food called vitamins and minerals. I heard yesterday from keith, my turkey friend, that they talk about how they feed turkeys healthy things so that the people who buy the turkeys won’t get sick or something like that. They also say we taste different at different ages.
Thanksgiving Compare and Contrast Food, Family, and Fun!! Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States, always celebrated on a Thursday in November. There are many different ways people celebrate Thanksgiving. You give thanks and celebrate what you are most thankful for. Thanksgiving is a national holiday that has many different traditions, activities, and foods in different families.
The first Thanksgiving was believed to be a feast after the first harvest; The Native American Wapanog tribe taught the first settlers to cultivate vital crops and sustain off the land1. Thanksgiving is an American holiday that values this union and cooperation between immigrant groups; the term “Native Americans” designates the very first immigrants2. The influx of immigrants gave birth, shaped, and developed American society. But immigrant groups, in modern context, have been politically and socially exploited. This may not have been as extreme as colonization, slavery, or exclusion, but a more discreet and covertly nativist ideology exists up to today: the fear of the rising immigrant population demoting White-Americans to a minority3.The view that immigrants were detrimental to society was expressed in the publication of many historical political cartoons. Thomas Nast and G.F. Keller both express their views that condemn and support this xenophobic culture, respectively; Nast utilized labeling while Keller, irony. The use of the analogy of Thanksgiving, in addition to other techniques, expresses the differing views on immigrants, and whether or
Thanksgiving Day is a day of family, food, and giving thanks for the blessings in life and yet some people believe Thanksgiving to be a prep day for Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. The focus of Thanksgiving shifted from family bonding to incessant shopping. This trend of taking away from the hours of Thanksgiving in order to shop is enraging. It steals away from family time for the shoppers and the employees. Employers threaten workers that if they do not work on that certain holiday, they will be fired. Black Friday should be kept to Friday instead of moving in on my family time. The whole culture of Black Friday has become repugnant and unnecessary.
Thanksgiving is a holiday in the United States, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year. Although the way holidays are celebrated over time, thanksgiving has always been a holiday feast. However, Thanksgiving is more than just eating food together with your family. For instance, some families do charity work for the poor people and create a Thanksgiving dinner for them, other family’s watch sport in addition to the food that they eat together. One part that is common at almost every Thanksgiving dinner is the type of food that is served. Families in the United States have celebrated Thanksgiving for hundreds of years, but the way it is celebrated has slightly changed from the first Thanksgiving. To be able to explain
On September 1, 1939 Germany invaded Poland to start the biggest war all mankind has ever seen. A man named Adolf Hitler led a group called the Nazi's. He convinced those men that Jewish people had ruined the world and caused Germany's downfall after World War One. They were also against people like gypsies, criminals, or anyone they thought were undesirable. Soon after the Germans started, Japan and Italy joined to help their cause. As the war went on the Nazi party grew bigger and stronger and countries started fighting back, but the Nazi's were to strong. Then one day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and just like that Americans were in the war. That day we became mortal enemies with all of Japan, and we weren't going to hold back on them. America was going to end this war. They didn't know how but they were going to. Then one day America used the first ever nuclear bombs. We bombed Japan twice and they were devestated and surrendered. America didn't stop there, they kept fighting, trying to end the war. Finally Italy and Germany surrendered and all of the remaining Jews we freed from th...
During fall, the leaves fall, the temperature drops, and people sit around a table and say what they are thankful for. While we are consuming pounds of turkey and stuffing, the Pilgrims are to thank for the annual feast. Because the meaning of this holiday is to not stuff your face with endless amount of carbs, we should be reminded of how grateful we are for what we own. Thanksgiving was a very memorable time in U.S. history.
Long is able to agree with Bellah that American civil religion exists, he highlights the fact that it takes away different aspects of history and it is only applicable for certain people. Thanksgiving while it’s purpose is to bring together families and demonstrate a sense of gratitude, it does not truly highlight how it came to be. Long argues that, “a great deal of writings and discussions on the topic of American religion has been… serving to enhance, justify, and render sacred the history of European immigrants in this land” (Long 212). Thanksgiving truly came into American history from the interactions of the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. Today, the story is told to children as if the relationship was perfect. When in actuality years later the Native Americans were persecuted and killed by settlers in America over land. Long is pointing out how the European immigrant’s history is made to seem pristine and in relation to Thanksgiving it is. In taking away the part of death and difficulties from the story it clouds over the truth, thus taking away the history of some American
"Learning social studies is to no small extent, learning to be stupid." (LMTTM 298.) What happens when history teachers and textbooks lie? Not only will the children grow up to be uneducated, but they'll continue to teach the same lies to their own children. The excuse most teachers use, according to Loewen, is they "feel they are supposed to defend and endorse America." (LMTTM 289.) If teachers told students about Woodrow Wilson being racist, Columbus forcing Indians into slavery, or how the FBI worked against the civil rights movement then children would be too aware of how the world works. Is this necessarily a bad thing? No, because the truth is always better than a lie, regardless of how ugly it may be. In order to be a truly good American, children must learn this country's true his...
It was a nice and sunny day. The sun was shining bright and the leaves on the trees gave a vibrant color of orange and red creating a magical fairy tale. The leaves on the ground dancing every time the wind howled. Families all around gathering together under one roof on this special day creating a delicious feast meant to feed a whole kingdom. The food being cooked filling the air with a spectacular smell of pumpkin, cinnamon, turkey, and other spectacular smells. The magical day that brings families together is known all across the world as Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving while playing fetch with my owner’s family I learned that not complaining for one day can bring families closer together.
History is a subject that some people may find interesting, and some may feel as if it is useless knowledge of facts. Although learning history does provide one with knowledge, the reason for history is much more than simple fact. Learning history is vital for the choices we make in our future, and if history is not being taught, or instilled into the minds of our youth then the lack of knowledge could be detrimental to the progression in their future. We study history to understand the thoughts of our ancestors, and how they dealt with moral and ethical dilemmas. Although the choices made were not always positive, or progressive, they still provide us with helpful lessons on how to assess the problems we now face in the present. Therefore, schools should not purchase textbooks that offer revised or alternative histories of historical events. Offering alternative or revised editions leave students with information that could contain bias information of past historical events. Deprivation of important historical events could lead to a greater risk of repetition of the same events that lead to disaster in the past. History helps us change, and contributes to moral understanding. Every part of history needs to be studied in depth, and a lesson needs to be learned as well as taught. If certain lessons such as slavery, The Holocaust, and the World Wars were just simply absent from our history books what could be said about our future? Would these disastrous events reoccur, and be more devastating than ever before? How can one assess and deal with a problem they have never faced?
This essay is going to be all about my opinion one important question “is american evil or good” in my opinion America is not evil the people and the past make it evil the critics demand apologies for these historical offenses and seek financial reparations for minorities and African-Americans. But the truth is that America has gone further than any society in establishing equality of right Let's begin by asking whether the white man was guilty of genocide against the native Indians. As a matter of fact, he was not. As William McNeill , great numbers of Indians did perish as a result of their contact with whites, So what about slavery? No one will deny that America practiced slavery, but America was hardly unique in this respect. Indeed, slavery
On November 26, 2009, Thanksgiving day, I could hear men shouting, “ Give me everything!” outside of my house. My father had told us, children, to stay inside while he headed out into the chaos. My little sister began to weep so my older sister and I put some of her favorite music on but very low. “ Cierra los ojos y no pienses en lo que está pasando afuera. Close your eyes and don’t think about what’s happening outside.” She stopped sobbing and I was relieved. My little cousins did the same thing as my sister. I decided to take a peek at what was happening considering that my head had already been filled with curiosity. I saw two men wearing ski masks outside my house, one of them holding a bag and the other pointing a gun at my father. I
When most people think about history they remember a boring class they took in school a long time ago, they recall memorizing important dates, taking map tests, and falling asleep while listening to a lecture. The truth is that history really is an important subject to be teaching students. History is more than just some lecture you receive in class, history lets us look back, see the good things and the bad things, it allows us to learn from our mistakes and prevent such mistakes from happening in the future. Things that happened in the past are still changing things that are happening today. History is needed for everyone, from government leaders down to individuals; everyone has learned one thing or another from history at some point in their life.
