Thanksgiving Dinner
Even though it was many years ago, I vividly remember my first Thanksgiving dinner. I was a little kid, no older than the age of seven. I flew in that day from Ann Arbor, Michigan, where we had attended a special ceremony honoring my uncle. As a result of the hectic flight schedule, I did not have the opportunity to eat very much that day, and I was eagerly anticipating the Thanksgiving dinner. We arrived at my grandparent’s house around six thirty in the evening. As soon as I entered the house, the tremendous aroma of all the foods filled the air and my taste buds began salivating in anticipation for the meal. Normally at family meals the food came out in courses, appetizers followed by the entrée. However, this time all the food came out at once. I immediately reached for the turkey and proceeded to take a huge slab of meat for my plate. Coupled with gravy, the turkey seemed irresistible. It was a big piece of dark meat, roasted to perfection. The skin had some sort of spice on it. I don’t recall the name of the spice, but I can tell you that the spice was sharp. Yes sharp, I think that’s the best way to describe it. After my first bite I found myself reaching for the nearest cup of water. However, after I got used to the spice, I began to realize its incredible taste. In less than ten minutes, I proceeded to wolf down this massive chunk of turkey.
Feeling the need to fill my now empty plate, I next reached for the Cranberry sauce. I had tasted Cranberry sauce many times before, but I never tasted it with fresh homegrown berries. The taste was absolutely exquisite. It bursted with flavor and possessed a tangy taste I never imagined could come from such a simple cranberry. It was amazing to taste the difference between this and the Cranberry sauce that comes in a can. After consuming several spoonfuls of cranberry sauce my stomach began to feel very full.
Being a little kid, I had no choice but to make room for dessert; and what a dessert it was! As soon as the pumpkin pie was removed from the oven, the air was filled with an aroma that can only be described as sensational. I took a look at the delicious homemade pie.
When the great holiday of Thanksgiving comes to mind, most people think of becoming total gluttons and gorging themselves with a seemingly unending amount of food. Others might think of the time spent with family and friends. The whole basis of the holiday is family togetherness, fellowship, and thankfulness for blessings received during the previous year.
This is a disgrace! To all the turkey’s at Thanksgiving! forty-five million turkey’s are cooked a year. Not only are those awful humans eating us, now they are entrapping us in disgusting cages and making us eat only corn and soybeans. That’s not even the worst part, they put something in our food called vitamins and minerals. I heard yesterday from keith, my turkey friend, that they talk about how they feed turkeys healthy things so that the people who buy the turkeys won’t get sick or something like that. They also say we taste different at different ages.
Thanksgiving today is about cooking and sharing a beautiful meal with family and friends which is far from what the first Thanksgiving was like. The first Thanksgiving was held to celebrate the first successful harvest they reaped (Source 5, Source 3).The feast lasted three days and turkey was not one of the items on the menu. The Pilgrims ate native fruits, Jerusalem artichokes, turnips, cabbage, native birds, shellfish, and Venison (source 11). Other Items did not show up on the menu until after the 1900s. The first Thanksgiving was quite different from modern Thanksgiving in many ways but one thing that hasn't changed is taking the time to be thankful for all that we have and have been
Food is an important part of Thanksgiving. One similarity I have with people is that we eat green beans and mashed potatoes. Next, I share having corn and stuffing with a little bit of peers. Lastly, I share having cranberry sauce and mac and cheese with a couple of my classmates.
For many people, Thanksgiving is a time for food, family and fellowship. For a not insignificant number of people, Thanksgiving is also time for another F word: football.
Textbooks in today’s schools still tell the same story that has been handed down from generation to generation. Every year children dress up and put on plays about the famous story of the first Thanksgiving. No one knows the truth though or at least people pretend to not know the embarrassing truth of our “founding fathers.” Textbooks today give the candy coated version of good saintly Englishmen come to a better world and find good neighbors willing to help in their time of need.

I stepped out of the chilly November air and into the warmth of my home. The first snowfall of the year had hit early in the morning, and the soft, powdery snow provided entertainment for hours. As I laid my furry mittens and warm hat on the bench to dry, I was immediately greeted with the rich scent of sweet apple pie, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, and the twenty-pound turkey my mother was preparing for our Thanksgiving feast.
It was a nice and sunny day. The sun was shining bright and the leaves on the trees gave a vibrant color of orange and red creating a magical fairy tale. The leaves on the ground dancing every time the wind howled. Families all around gathering together under one roof on this special day creating a delicious feast meant to feed a whole kingdom. The food being cooked filling the air with a spectacular smell of pumpkin, cinnamon, turkey, and other spectacular smells. The magical day that brings families together is known all across the world as Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving while playing fetch with my owner’s family I learned that not complaining for one day can bring families closer together.
I was seating on the couch and watched TV. My dad had just got home. The subs smelled like melted cheese. When I got my sub it had meat, American cheese, pickles, spicy mustard, and banana peppers, and lettuce. My food looked great, and tasted great, so when I saw what my dad had I asked “what is that?”
My mother’s Italian dinner is a full display of her excellence in the kitchen. This meal is different from the others; it is immeasurably close to her heart. The preparation is old fashioned, bringing back memories of our ancestral history. The table is set beautifully- silverware and glasses sparkling on the tablecloth- and crystal carafes of wine filled to the brim (water for the kids of course). The whole family arrives.
My kitchen at home is a sanctuary for me because it’s my family’s meeting place. When anyone in our house has something to announce, an important event is upcoming, or we have to discuss anything- it’s done at the kitchen table. The smell of my mom cooking something, or something she had cooked always welcomes us. One very important discussion we had was when I received my high school application. We all sat around the table and discussed what choices I should put for two hours. All that was done at the kitchen table, and it was one of the most wonderful experiences in our family. The whole time my mom had been preparing chicken noodle soup, and the smell satisfied us all- it would definitely be scrumptious. We also, had time to talk about what I wanted to do in my future- and I have never before been...
