How important are mothers to their child? Is one of the main question that P&G rose in their Olympic ad “Thank You, Mom.” In P&G’s “Thank You Mom” ad, P&G uses Olympians and Olympians’ mothers as a synecdoche to represent society’s need for a strong, supportive, and believing mother to help guide children throughout their coming of age no matter where they live in the world. The ad starts by showing four different families, from China, Brazil, United States, and England but focuses on the mom and their young children. The viewers can follow the children until they become Gold medalists at the London Olympics, which results from mothers’ strength, support, and belief.

In this ad race and different ethnicities portray the idea that no matter where a child is from, it will always have a mother that supports him or her. A mother will guide its child no matter what the circumstances are, and they will never stop encouraging and pushing their child forward. A mother will go out of her way to take their child to meets and competition for their child to succeed. They will sit and watch their child swim laps after laps, they will sit and watch their child do floor routine after floor routine, and whether their child falls or do well, they will always be proud of their child. A successful athlete is the result of very intense and hard training. Morning practices, after school practices, weekend practices, training to be an Olympian takes a lot of dedication and strength. Therefore, for a child to have a supportive mother is vital. When at the end of the ad the mothers are all crying of joy as they watch their child participate in the Olympics, there is this unexplainable emotion that arises from the ad. The music then accompanies this feeling very well as it speeds up until it reaches the climax of the video and then it slows down when the mom embraces their little child in their arms. The viewer then realizes that part of this athletic success is partly because of a mother’s support and encouragement. What if that one morning when the child did not want to wake up, his or mother would not have been there to say “Come on sweetheart, wake up, breakfast is waiting for you.” What if that one day when the child wanted to quit its mother would not have been there to say “Do not quit, after all, this hard work you cannot abandon now, you will make it, come on!”.
