The Catholic religion, the most common practiced religion in the world, can be seen as a common setting for the origin of the Bible that is the oldest known book to this day. The Bible tells of many great stories of old that have been somewhat forgotten; In Gabriel Garcia Marquez's ,A Chronicle of a Death Foretold, biblical allusion are used throughout the novel which compares symbolisms and imagery to the Bible and Roman Catholic religion. The main focus of interest in the novel is the murder of Santiago Nasar which can be compared to the murder and acts against Jesus Christ. Acts and imagery of other actions taking place in the novel can be referred to the Bible of the Roman Catholic religion.
Santiago Nasar, the main protagonist in the novel, is murdered for no other reason than for the honor killing of the Vicario twins. Santiago on the morning of the murder “Santiago put on a shirt and pants of white linen”(5); White is the color for innocence the same color that Jesus in the bible wore on the same day of his death and the white is used to express the innocence of Santiago. From the beginning of the book we know that the bishop is coming to town and by knowing that the religion is from the novel the reader would have to assume that there had to be some symbolic representation which has to do with the religion in the novel.
The main allusions that can relate the character of Santiago to Jesus of the catholic religion would have to be his death. “The knife went through the palm of his right hand and then sank into his side up to the hilt. With the reading one can develop the true story behind the murder of Santiago and how his story is just like that of Jesus Christ. The reader gets the knowledge of one of the oldest stories with the help of this novel. The power of the Roman Catholic Church is a powerful effect on the world around this novel and the world today and through the novel we see the effect of the seven deadly sins that are apart of the society that we don’t see with the naked eye. Also the reader should get a deeper understanding of how the seven sins are related to people and everyday live of humans. If we don’t learn from the stories of the past we are doomed to repeat it.

...all want to believe that the crime was truly “foretold”, and that nothing could have been done to change that, each one of the characters share in a part of Santiago Nasar’s death. Gabriel Garcia Marquez writes about the true selfishness and ignorance that people have today. Everyone waits for someone else to step in and take the lead so something dreadful can be prevented or stopped. What people still do not notice is that if everyone was to stand back and wait for others, who is going to be the one who decides to do something? People don’t care who gets hurt, as long as it’s not themselves, like Angela Vicario, while other try to reassure themselves by thinking that they did all that they could, like Colonel Lazaro Aponte and Clotilde Armenta. And finally, some people try to fight for something necessary, but lose track of what they set out for in the first place.
Marquez places biblical allusions in the names of the characters to further illustrate the connection to religion. The Vicario brothers, Pablo and Pedro, are to be viewed as allusions to Peter and Paul. Peter indirectly killed Jesus by denying Christ three times before the cocks crowed. This is similar to Pablo’s actions because although he was not responsible for the murder of Santiago, he denied Nasar a chance of repenting before the morning, the crowing of the cocks. Poncio, the father of Angela, is a symbolic reference to Pontius Pilate. He permitted his sons to kill; similar to Pontius Pilate, who allowed the crucifixion of Christ. Santiago’s own name parallels to that of Jesus. His first name Santiago, is a derivative of Saint, which suggests divinity and holiness. His last Nasar is a reference to Nazareth, as in Jesus of Nazareth.
Just as Santiago gave into his assailants the biblical Christ never fought against the will of the people in Jerusalem and in the end, all the people of Jerusalem came to see Jesus on the cross for they knew that they were at fault. The first two obstacles that Santiago faces are that his father tells him he can not do something that he wants to do and that he wants to pursue his personal legend, but he does not want to hurt those that he loves. For example, Santiago’s father said, “The people who come here have a lot of money to spend, so they can afford to travel. Santiago clothed in white linen, was killed in front of an unsupportive crowd, as well as stabbed in the hands first, exactly as Christ was. The presentation, in depth, enriched ,my understanding of the novel through knowledge of the Columbian culture, the novel’s time period, central themes, and magical realism.
Through the many characters in Garca Márquez’s book, we can see that the heavy burden of one’s honor is portrayed as the reason for Santiago Nasar’s unfortunate homicide. Pedro and Pablo Vicario, being the ones who held the knives that murdered him, were the direct cause of Santiago Nasar’s death, although, their motive was not an act of jealousy or rage. The underlying reason for their crime came from the upholding of their family's honor after they find out that Santiago Nasar has ruined their sister, Angela Vicario, and their family name, by taking her virginity. Many times throughout the novel, it is apparent that the twins truly don’t want to kill Santiago, but feel they have to. Their hesitation can be observed many times throughout the book by the fact that they wait so long to kill Santiago, and all the while tell everyone they come into contact with of their plan.
Foremost, Marquez foretold Santiago’s fate with the opening line “on the day they were going to kill him, Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning to wait for the boat the bishop was coming on” to illustrate our fate is decided before we are born (Marquez 3). Santiago can be compared to a Christ figure on the basis of his relationships with other characters in the novel. People look up to Santiago, as would a follower to Christ, hereby setting up a comparison between the two. (transition) Since the age of five, Manolin has aided the old man by working alongside him as an apprentice. Manolin is loyal to Santiago and looks up to him as if Santiago was his real father. According to Delbert Wylder, "Santiago has, in a sense been the boy’s spiritual father" ( 219). Manolin is in awe of the old man, who the town recognizes as an honorable fisherman. The boy states, "There are many good fishermen and some great ones. But there is only you." Like Santiago, Christ was also a spiritual father to his town; the town of Bethlehem. He performed miracles to heal the sick, and fed thousands of starving people. As Jim Auer says, "This demonstrates Santiago’s relation to Christ. They are both extremely unique, and were father figures in their communities" (15). ?The people of Bethlehem looked up to Christ as a father figure, and they had love and admiration towards him.? Likewise, "The love of Manolin for Santiago is that of a discipline for a master in the arts of fishing, it is also the love of a son for an adopted father" (Wagner-Martin 307). Through Manolin’s caring of the old man, he shows his love for Santiago. Even though Santiago is not Manolin’s biological father, he cares for him as though he was. Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez (G. Rabassa 2007 trans.) is a parabolic recreation of a historical murder that is presented in the magical realism genre and has a unique balance of journalism and allegory; of history and morality play. García Márquez subtlely combines reality with fantastical occurrences to make such events seem normal which would otherwise be considered paranormal in the physical world. In today’s world, there is controversy over if the inerrancy of the Bible and inspiration of the writers; however, there is little controversy over the simple fact of the New Testament, as a whole, itself. The Bible is not one long book, but rather, the Bible is a book consisting of various letters and manuscripts from throughout the history of mankind. A human being wrote every book of today’s Bible during various times in history. However, there is a classic divide in the books—Old and New Testament. The Old Testament is considered the Jewish Bible. This Bible was the original Scriptures during the time of Jesus and was the original Scriptures for many years. Therefore, not much controversy has risen over the assembly of the Old Testament.
