Throughout this class, I have learned and worked on skills that I feel have made me a better writer and reader. By taking this class, I feel that I have become better at textual analysis of works throughout different time periods, I have learned how to discuss literary works among my peers both in class and online, and through the work in class I feel like I have become a better writer. I really enjoyed the textual analysis done in class. It was fun looking at a text and thinking about the history behind it, and the author’s intentions behind parts of the text. It has also been fun seeing how literary works in different time periods show the same traits and adhere to roughly the same ideals. Textual analysis will help me greatly in my academic life at Hamline. It will also be helpful in my life moving forward to break down a text and look at its elements. It will help me in my writing to see those elements, and apply some of them to my own writing. The textual analysis skills that I have learned in class will be interesting to apply to my own writing in the future, so that my audience will come to the same conclusions I have drawn about my work. …show more content…
The assignments in class help me think about what I would do with a text as a writer and as a reader. The assignments also help me to break up a text, so I can see what specific parts about it I am interested and would be interested in writing more about. Writing about texts helps take a closer look at it and draw conclusions about it, and it takes sufficient skills as a writer to communicate to an audience a specific way I interpreted the text. It is also very interesting in class to read multiple works by the same author and seeing their style of writing come to life. Looking at style and language helps me to figure out what style and language I would want to incorporate into my writing, which I feel makes my work
Another thing that I learned from taking this course is how to build a better writing and reading skills. Acknowledging reading and writing skills will help me to succeed in my other university courses.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Poverty and homelessness are often, intertwined with the idea of gross mentality. illness and innate evil. In urban areas all across the United States, just like that of Seattle. in Sherman Alexie’s New Yorker piece, What You Pawn I Will Redeem, the downtrodden. are stereotyped as vicious addicts who would rob a child of its last penny if it meant a bottle of whiskey.
Especially with the help of my professor Ms. Piper. I was still having trouble on material on writing, but she helped me by teaching us the writing process, how to revise our drafts, and how to use outlines to help us. She has also taught us ways of breaking down paragraphs in piece of writing to help us understand what we are reading about. I feel with this new approach it opened my eyes on a way to help me excel on my writing, and reading. I am an excellent writer and reader than I was before.
For me, being a college writer means writing well-organized essays that readers enjoy reading. Being a well rounded writer was also important. Each unit in this class challenged me to write in a well-organized, concise way. During each unit, we conducted some sort of revision activity where I was exposed to other students’ writing. As I read their work, I picked up on their use of transition words and separation of paragraphs to make the essay flow. Naturally, I began implementing more transition words in my own work and learned the appropriate ways to split paragraphs. The structure of the class was key to the organization of my ideas which was crucial to the development of my essay. During the third unit of this class, we were asked to identify an issue on campus, conduct research on the issue, and finally propose a solution to correct the issue. At first, it was difficult to get my ideas down and figure out what it was I would research. What I learned in class allowed me to first identify the issue I would research, write a rough draft, and hear what others had written before the final paper was due. This helped me to identify the main points, brainstorm and figure out what additional research I would need to find to support my argument. Being able to organize my thoughts from the beginning made writing the paper a much easier process. This course has helped me to grow as a writer and make

I learned from my peers that I am a better writer than I thought I was and that increased my confidence in my writing ability. This didn’t just teach me about myself; I learned how to write several different types of papers. I improved throughout the semester as I learned how to analyze for rhetorical appeals, research an issue, and evaluate a topic. I am glad that I was able to learn a lot from this class, as well as read my peers work. It was intriguing to see how others write and what topic are important to them. I learned terminology such as pathos, ethos, and logos. I learned when we had to write a case for the poor man's bees. I would have liked to have learned more about classic literature by having reading assignments. I most enjoyed Essay 2 because I argued that the WWE is art and the nature of art is a philosophical topic and fun to debate. I found the assignments in which students had to fill out a template from "They Say, I Say" and respond to as few to be the least enjoyable. I feel this way because most students would make an argument that most would agree with such as "eating healthy is good". I think some sort of reading assignments of classical examples of whatever we where covering at the time could be a good addition to the class.
Personally, I believe that I have gained valuable knowledge in my English classes. Recently, I am about to end my third English course of college and it has been a good experience, those courses helped and influenced a lot in my writing. I believe I did more than just improve my writing skills. I received some rhetorical and genre knowledge, and learned about the writing process and how to appropriately enter a conversation without losing my own style of writing.
The actual class time along with the Academic Discourse essay and my Genre Experiment #1 paper are the main parts of what has molded my current writing. Normally in english I would be writing on novels and articles but now I’m writing on things that I like or that are interesting to me. I am even being forced to write about myself, which is a good thing. I suppose if I had to wrap up english 1010 as a whole it would be you should experiment with new ideas and new ways. One of the main reasons we are here at college is to try new things and cultures outside ones that we are familiar with, this class just made sure we did
For instance, my used of writing process knowledge during my analysis of Hemingway’s dialogue. During the beginning stages of this essay we spent the majority of class time reading through “Hills Like White Elephants” and looking for ways he used dialogue, as well as symbolism. As the paper progressed we would write a draft of one body paragraph then turn it in for our professor to read and as he would edit that draft we would work on another paragraph. This helped to make it easier to put the paper all together and edit it, it was able to help me improve on breaking my essay into chunks. The P.I. E outline was also used in this essay, this helped me to generate a general flow to the analysis. Secondly this paper helped me improve on Rhetorical Knowledge. In order to study and explain the ways Hemingway used symbolism in “Hills Like White Elephants” I had to understand the authors purpose. It taught me that when I find a piece of symbolism and go to explain it you have to include the little detail of what Hemingway wanted it to symbolize such as “The crops and river represent life to the girl as well as a new beginning. The man only sees the dry side of the valley, symbolizing how he does not want the child. However, the girl wants the child and believes that this can be the start of something new. Therefore, the reason she can see the crops and
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
This class has helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses in literature. This has allowed me to grow and realize that I am a work in progress. I am confident that by the end of this class my big issues in writing will be improved. Each assignment in this class is helping grow and is making me into the writer I know I can be.
I feel as though this class has helped me become a more polished and professional writer. When I first entered English 110, I was extremely unsure and lacked confidence in my writing. I believe that this point can be partly attributed to the fact that I always had my instructors holding my hand and helping me through the writing process in high school. My senior English teacher always reminded us that college would be much more challenging than her class was, and then she would go on to tell us stories of professors who gave out zeros for tiny oversights within a paper. This, combined with general apprehension about college life, left me terrified.
Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
