Drivers today are distracted by an infinite amount of sources. Along with traveling, people today have much to get done in a day and are prone to multitask at the wheel. The main offenders such as texting, eating, and fiddling with the radio take eyes off the road. However in addition to the most notable causes of diversion talking on the phone is a major distraction that often goes uncredited. Drivers take their eyes off the road to dial numbers and then proceed to have a conversation while driving, rather than pulling over. Likewise many people are already calling for cell phone use to be completely banned from Pennsylvania roads like it is in other states. The state of Pennsylvania should ban all hand held cellphone use from its roads.
Contrary to popular belief placing a call on a cellphone is just as dangerous as texting. The National Safety Council claims that cell phone use causes up to 1.3 million crashes a year, which is often assumably accredited to texting, but both methods of distraction run the same risks. A driver must take their eyes off the road to dial a number or pick up their phone. For those few seconds a driver is looking down and off the road, much like a texter, despite the fact that their action is completely legal. Also exactly like texting cell phone conversations can be distracting due to the topic of discussion. When a driver speaks with another person on the phone they disengage from what is happening on the road. Especially when the driver is placing an important call they can prioritize the conversation before maintaining proper driving technique creating a dangerous situation for those around them. Talking on a cell phone can become a just as dangerous habit as texting for the drivers of Pennsylvania. One can easily avoid placing cell phone calls on the road by pulling over. Some may argue that the importance of many phone calls to drivers makes refraining from using phones on the road impossible. However, drivers can simply pull over when an important call must be attended to while behind the wheel. Many drivers already take such a courtesy to those around them and pull over to avoid hazard. Additionally Most Pennsylvania roads feature shoulders as a safety standard as well as the many parking options in urban areas where shoulders are not as common. Especially during long drives on highways, that can be longer than expected shoulders are easily found to pull into to receive an important call. Also once off the road important calls can better be attended to by the driver. By pulling over to receive or place a call, Pennsylvania drivers eliminate all safety hazards and all reason to talk on the phone while driving. Pennsylvanians are already calling for a ban on cellphone use from the roads all together. According to Edgar Snyder and Associates, a law firm in Western Pennsylvania, 74% of Pennsylvanians are already calling for such a ban. Drivers are already willing to sacrifice small tasks for safety, yet the minority continues to be careless. Distracted drivers can cause accidents that harm multiple vehicles and victims. Safer roads will save lives that would otherwise be lost to careless drivers receiving phone calls behind the wheel. No life is worth a simple phone call just like Pennsylvania has decided that no text is worth a life. Due to such popular belief Pennsylvania lawmaker should propose and pass a bill for the ban off cellphone use to drivers. Pennsylvania should outlaw all hand-held cellphone use while driving including the placing and receiving calls . Making cellphone calls while driving is one of the main causes of the over 120,000 crashes caused per year according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Eliminating the causes of potentially fatal accidents will save lives and create a more pleasant driving experience for Pennsylvanians. Therefore the populous of Pennsylvania should call on its local lawmakers to ban the use of cellphones while driving.
The several effects of distracted driving are deadly. Andrew Lavallee points out that “texting while driving is unsafe. Not only are a driver’s eyes off the road, one or both hands are off the wheel.” “We think it is incompatible with safe driving” (qtd. in Lavallee). “Study upon study showed that talking on a cellphone was far more dangerous than she’d realized – that a driver on a phone had the same reaction speed as someone legally intoxicated, that those talking on a phone behind the wheel are four times as likely to crash” (qtd. in Hanes). Stephanie Hanes also mentions that, “Unlike a conversation with a passenger, the electronic conversation takes a driver into a virtual space away from the road.” Subsequently, this causes severe problems and deadly

I gave my persuasive speech on the issue of texting while driving. I picked this topic because I believe it is a common problem in today’s society, but people do not understand the actual consequences of it. I believe people think it is not harmful and something bad will not happen to them because it is “easy” to do. I gave this speech to inform people how easy it is to become distracted and get in an accident. Overall, I believe my speech went pretty well. I believe I have improved on my eye contact and effective pauses, I still need to improve on my vocal variation, and I noticed I do not carry out the strength in my voice at the end of sentences.

Discussion 2, Presentation I would like to address a major issue across America involving the driving conditions we must face getting to and from anywhere. First and foremost, the DMV reiterates daily that driving is a privilege not a right. Second and most importantly, there is no requirement that needs to be met except a passing test one day of the year to acquire a license to anywhere in America. Police aren’t even holding drivers responsible maybe because of backlash from all the media but that’s a whole other presentation. America is overrun with unprofessional, over populated, and unorganized heavy traffic.
It’s good to do 2 things at once, like texting and walking, but it’s only good till someone get themselves hurt. Lots of people get hurt for this operation and someone needs to do something to prevent these tragedies. Some may say that walking while texting saves time, but it could stop one in their tracks in an instant. Communicating on the go is great, but there are many injuries and fatalities from texting and walking.
