Arletha Joseph, “Writing Assignment 3: Texas Legislative Sessions and Texas Governor Terms” Do you support or oppose the State of Texas increasing the Texas Legislature’s regular sessions from 140 days every two years? Why or why not?
Typically, when making Texas laws, government officials discount the political beliefs of its constituents; partly due to time constraints. Stretches in committee debates will allow the voice of Texans, that are currently being overlooked, the adequate attention that is necessary to introduce bills. Therefore, I support an increase in Texas Legislature’s regular sessions; it gives leaders more time to fully represent their constituents.

Sadly, Rick Perry did not win re-election because he represented his State well; he won because of name recognition and financial backing. Incumbents generally know their way around the political world and can finagle challenges that only an experienced leader can manage. Texas could get a strong community leader who is steadily pushing forward by securing the State with jobs, healthcare, crime reduction etcetera. To replace a governor like this, just when the momentum begins to pick up speed, would be a travesty. However, Texans do not have the luxury of taking a chance on the possibility of a formidable opponent leading the State without term limits. The longer a governor is in office, the more enticing it becomes to follow the money.
Though, it would be refreshing to elect an official who remained focused on the best interest of their constituent, the reality is, special interest groups hold the purse. We must set term limits to prevent corruption and give the new comer on the block a fighting
