2a. [1] The Tesla self-driving car is the future of the automobile industry. The car has the ability to drive itself and perform like a normal driver would but a lot safer. Its intention is to change the way we use cars and help prevent less automotive related accidents. The computational artifact illustrates how the car sees the world. It downloads a GPS in order to have assess the roads and ultrasonic sensors to sense what’s around it. Both of these combined create a car that can see what’s going on around it and react to changes on the road. [1]
2b. The design of the computational artifact was pretty simple. First I researched what the car mainly uses to operate, this was the GPS and the ultrasonic sensors. Then I used Microsoft Visio

Tesla’s autopilot system comes with benefits and harmful effects. The benefits are the number of automobile accidents go way down. This was one of the main reasons the car is being produced. The car can sense every obstacle around it and change itself to better the situation. For example, if someone doesn’t know the speed limit in a certain area the car will automatically go that speed. It creates less stress for the human in the vehicle. Often when driving, sometimes people get stressed out or tired while driving and that could lead to accidents or deaths. A few harmful effects could also hold off certain buyers to the car. Even though the car is much safer than any normal driver, it’s still a computer based program driving it and programs can have bugs. For example, if something happened to the program it might not see the car in front of it and end up hitting it or hit someone crossing the street. [3] Another example of a bug leading to disaster took place in Florida this year. A man named Joshua Brown was enjoying a ride in his Tesla when the car’s sensors didn’t pick up a white semi-truck that was directly by him and the car attempted to drive under the truck and ended up getting torn to shreds. The sensors on the car couldn’t pick up semi because the sun was glaring off the semi and the sensors could not see it. However, this was the first related death in a Tesla using the autopilot feature. [3] The cars impact on society could be huge once it comes out …show more content…
Tesla’s autopilot system uses a lot of data in order to operate correctly. It needs to take in data every second in order to get every sign, line, car and person in order to avoid a collision or fatality. It takes in the speed limit, the speed of the cars around it, the lines on the road, people in the vicinity and tells the car to follow the speed limit and avoid colliding with anything in its area. It should do this about every second because the situation changes so much on the road so it needs to stay up to date. A potential security risk is the car being hacked by other people. Tesla has tried to keep the car as safe and secure as possible but even with the best technology someone will eventually find a way around it. It’s a big scare for some people who may be afraid of someone taking control over the car and having control over them if they are in it. For their data storage unit Tesla bought a 1-million-dollar state of the art data storage system to support its autopilot system. [5] They bought this to insure the car always remembered where it was at all times if it passed the same spot over and over again. This will hopefully give the cars lots of room to have more data about the surrounding areas and make it easier for the system to operate the vehicle
There are several great traits about Tesla vehicles. The model S, which is Tesla’s first sedan, is Consumer Report’s “top pick” in the survey. Not only were they top pick in the sedan class vehicles, but they were also the overall top pick among consumers. This means that in a survey it ranked higher than GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, and many others. (LeBeau, Phillip) This is quite the accomplishment. One of the reasons for its highest picks is the car high safety ratings. The NHTSA or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Tesla Model S a five star safety rating in every category and subcategory. They would’ve rated it even higher if they could; sadly, the NHTSA’s scoring system only goes up to five. There is another chance for the Model S to score higher. The VSS or the Vehicle Safety Score, which is the safety score given back to the manufactures gave the Model S a 5.4. This score is higher than any class of vehicle on the road ways to date and has the lowest risk of any injury front, side, rear, and rollover included. (LeBeau) This car is so incredibly safe that there are reports of the test equipment breaking before the car itself does. Tesla also has a quite controversial method for selling ...
Then the car reads the information from the sensors to refine its position. After that, the car then gathers all of that information and creates a digital image of the environment around the car. This image includes all still and moving objects in its vicinity. This could range from buildings, traffic lights, stop signs, other cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. Also, the blinker of the other cars in its range.
Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
The term autonomous refers to the capability of acting independently, or having the freedom to do so. A self-driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes, and braking in case of an emergency on their own, without the driver’s assistance. Automated vehicles are capable of maneuvering through street traffic, as well as other natural and man-made obstacles along the way. Therefore, this technology might completely change the methods of transportation.
Recently, the transport company Über released a small group of self-driving cars in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This breakthrough in technology seems to be something a million years away, but there are people already experiencing the thrills of a self-driving car. However, this car was not achieved without years and years of the greatest minds in multiple fields congregating together and scrutinizing each and every model. The only way this was created was through an abundance of conflict and sleepless nights.
In 2010, Google broadcasted that they created an archetype of a car that can drive itself; its purpose, to avert collisions, allow citizens more time, and cut down on harmful pollutants that vehicles produce (Poczter & Jankovic, 2014). The heart of the self-driving automobile is lasers that are mounted on the roof of a modified Toyota Prius that produces a precise three-dimensional atlas of the area surrounding the car. Furthermore, the automobile is outfitted with four radars, and another laser around the vehicle that allows it to precisely create a 3-D map of its surroundings (Poczter & Jankovic, 2014). The vehicle calculates the laser dimensions with high-resolution maps of the globe, which allows it to drive itself without human intervention, while evading obstacles and obeying traffic laws (How Google’s self-Driving Car Works, 2011).
The self-driving car would cause many people to lose their jobs. The careers that would no longer be needed due to the self-driving car include but are not limited to those who drill oil, taxi drivers, and personal injury lawyers. If self-driving cars were electric, oil drillers would be needed less and a majority could lose their jobs. If there’s self-driving cars, there could easily be a self-driving taxi service. If self-driving cars reduce accidents a majority of personal injury lawyers’ business would disappear. Also the gasoline industry would suffer, affecting stockholders, and there would be no need for drivers’ education
There are many distracted or impaired drivers on the road which neither would be the case with a self-driving car. According to, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Alcohol impaired driving accounted for 31% of auto accident fatalities in 2013 (NTSA 3). Therefore, Self-driving vehicles would essentially eliminate or at the very least dramatically reduce this statistic, saving many lives each year. It is like having a designated driver built into your vehicle.
Tesla will help improve the environment by reducing air pollution and by reducing fossil fuel usage by using electricity instead of gasoline. This will make the world a safer and more efficient environment. This will further improve how our future
Automotive executives touting self-driving cars as a way to make commuting more productive or relaxing may want to consider another potential marketing pitch: safety (Hirschauge, 2016). The biggest reason why these cars will make a safer world is that accident rates will enormously drop. There is a lot of bad behavior a driver exhibit behind the wheel, and a computer is actually an ideal motorist. Since 81 percent of car crashes are the result of human error, computers would take a lot of danger out of the equation entirely. Also, some of the major causes of accidents are drivers who become ill at the time of driving. Some of the examples of this would be a seizure, heart attack, diabetic reactions, fainting, and high or low blood pressure. Autonomous cars will surely remedy these types of occurrences making us
Over the years, cars have advanced from a very basic and functional piece of technology to a high speed and intelligent set of interrelated components. Cars play a big part in our world and have changed a lot over the years.
Hailed as one of the most American cocktails, the Martini has been present in the alcohol-drinking culture for over a century and continues to reign strong. Though the history contains many claims of creation, the classic Martini is a bar staple for businessmen and housewives alike. Many versions of the Martini are available on the market today, but the classic is one that is not heard of as much in present day. The origin of the Martini is a rather unclear one, with many variations of its creation from all over the world.
This decision by Tesla has made a turning point in the race to develop the fully autonomous vehicles. This is a challenging game. This decision of the company involves some remarkable milestones.
Cars have been a great impact on human lives ever since they were invented. There are many manufacturers that create and build new vehicles. Tesla is one of the manufacturer that is changing the creation of automobiles from the price, to the saving of gas, and can be useful in long trips.
Otherwise, it might lead to serious credibility questions and might even make the company a takeover target. To address this severe challenge, Tesla should find reliable suppliers for the crucial components (like batteries) for its cars and focus on assembly. This will also allow Tesla to focus on improving the autopilot capabilities with its cars and be prepared to match the serious competition expected soon, right at its door steps. GM already announced the plan to launch a self-driving car in 2019, without steering or pedals (Sage&Lienert,2017). This showcases the confidence GM has in its self-driving car.
