Why I Write by Terry Tempest Williams is a thought provoking short essay, that makes its readers’ question “Why exactly do I write?”. I find myself asking the same question and only getting the answer “because my teacher tells me to”. That is honestly such a superficial answer but the best I can come up with at the moment. I’m thinking a little harder and I guess I unintentionally write everyday. I write whenever I send out a tweet or post a caption in my Instagram photos or when I am writing something anonymously on Yik Yak or whenever I am texting my friends. Technically that is considered writing and I guess the reason I write is entirely for social reasons and every once in a while write a paper for academic reason, such as right now. I
think I have this relationship with writing because of the way the world is set in 2015. So many social aspects of life have been transferred over to the internet and “social” media and writing about every little thing I do is almost second nature. Having this intimate relationship with the internet is almost a necessity for young people in this day and age. Although this is writing is consistent it is a fairly shallow level of writing. I find it hard for me to conjure enough brain power to write a paper that is worthy of a decent grade. I wish I wasn’t like this and I had a stronger background in writing and it was easier for me to write academic papers. I blame it on technology and the direction the world is going. By the time I am done with class I plan to have be a stronger writer and actually have the desire to read books instead of only doing so when it assigned by a teacher.
While preparing for one of his college lectures, Dennis Baron, a professor and linguistics at the University of Illinois, began playing with the idea of how writing has changed the world we lived in and materials and tools we use in everyday life. This lecture slowly transitioned into “Should Everybody Write?” An article that has made many wonder if technology has made writing too easy for anyone to use or strengthens a writer's ability to learn and communicate their ideas. Baron uses rhetorical strategies in his article to portray to his audience his positive tone, the contrast and comparison of context and his logical purpose.
The book Fearfully and Wonderfully Made by Dr. Paul Brand & Philips Yancey gives a whole new meaning on what is studying biology. He starts by describing the very first time he saw a cell. He was amazed and from there on he learn how to be a biology student, while still having strong beliefs. He compares the human body as a community. Since each individual cell can live for itself. All cells come together to sustain the larger organism and properly function the way it should be.The analogy in 1 Corinthians 12, compares the human body to the church, where he states how god put each individual cell in its place for a reason. We all are made up of many cells but, we can not function if there are not together as a whole.
The deaths per year done by guns, 80% of them are gang related. If I Grow Up, written by Todd Strasser shows the life of a male kid growing up in the projects in Chicago. DeShawn wanted didn’t want to join the gang and stay in school. But his family didn’t have money or food. His friend that was in the gang had a bunch of money. So DeShawn joined the gang because in school they didn’t teach them much, and the money that his family got was a lot more of it when he got in the gang. I think that DeShawn had a choice not to join the gang because he could get a job, could have gotten a better education, and other people have gotten out of the projects.

In “I am Joaquin”, women are represented minimal, unspecific, and stereotypical. The term coined by Gonzales was not inclusive to women. A lack of women’s acknowledgment engagement with the Chicano Movement is present in Gonzales poem. In these lines “I shed the tears of anguish as I see my children disappear” Gonzales gives the impression of stereotypical women (I am Joaquin) . An image of a mother stereotype is depicted instead of an image of women contributing and involved in the movement through activism and organizations. Women such as Dolores Huerta played a vital role in the evolvement of the Chicano Movement however, the Chicano Social Identity is not inclusive to women because women are defined by men. Dolores Huerta was an important farmworker organizer within the farmworker struggles.
The story I chose for this analysis is “Why, you reckon?” by Langston Hughes. IN this analysis I will be focusing on how the great depression in Harlem had effect on the story, how racism played a part, and how or if the characters were justifyied in their actions. During this time period the intense racial divide combined with the economic harships that plagued the U.S. during the 1923’s makes for an interesting story that makes you think if the charaters were really justified.
Writing is a type of art because it requires you to think and be creative in the way you want it to be. I have a diary that I wrote almost everyday. They help me think about my day and sometimes turn my bad day into a good day. I write whatever comes into my head at that moment, and reflect on my day. Writing make me think deeper to what happen and help me turn my negative thought to positive. Writing is a very powerful tool. When I write, I have the power to change the story. I am the author of my own story so I can be as creative as I want.
The chapter “Clarify What’s Important to you” introduces several successful leaders and many praiseworthy values to me. Although each leader comes from different environments and possesses different characters, all of them keep their precious values in mind and persist in chasing their ideal lives. Even if each value can be interpreted by different meanings, they all lead encourage individuals to become better.
When trying to think of a positive writing experience I have had in my lifetime, particularly as a small child, I could not think of any. So I began to ask myself why is it that I do not like writing, what happened in my life for me to have such animosity towards the act. I was finally able to think of an event and realized that it had all begun in the 3rd grade. One day, as a punishment for talking during class, I was kept inside during recess and was forced to write Wise Old Owls until my hands began to cramp. For 45 minutes, I was only allowed to write the same old phrase over and over again; “The wise old owl sat on an oak, the more he heard, the less he spoke, the less he spoke the more he heard, why can’t I be like that wise old bird”. To this day I can still remember that little rhyme and to this day I can remember that same feeling I felt as a elementary school student. From that point on I have always had an aversion for writing, it always seemed like a punishment. I still do not understand how people can journal. I don’t see how someone can sit down and write an entry or a novel just for the hell of it. It seems unnatural to me, but I guess that all of these feelings are just because I see writing as a punishment, an
“You don’t write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say,” F. Scott Fitzgerald. My senior English instructor wrote this quote on the board every day before beginning class, he always told us to write with a purpose. During high school I was placed in honors level courses that were writing intensive and much more rigorous than the college prep courses. While in those courses I thought of myself as a pretty good writer that never really had to try, getting nearly all A’s on the papers I wrote. Although I never really sat down and really critiqued my writing to make revisions and peer review was just a time to chat with your friends about your plans for the weekend. Now after completing my first year of college I see myself as an accomplished writer but I still believe that there is room
Written words can be preserved for long periods of time and can be read by those who stumble upon the written work; however, I write only when I feel it is necessary or is asked of me. I seldom feel the urge to get out of bed to write my thoughts of paper. A smaller form of writing that I choose to use every day is when I am messaging someone on my phone or I am making notes for something I have to do later.
As the saying goes, practice makes perfect; writing is not exempt from this maxim. Writing frequently allows students to get a better grasp of the language in their writing, such as proper diction, punctuation, sentence variety, and organization of the artifact. I also believe that young writers should be writing as much as possible so that they have the time to discover their voice and how to incorporate that into their writing. On the flip side, frequent writing could also help young writers discern when they should leave their personal voice out of a piece of writing or when it would be inappropriate to include it. However, I believe that proponents of frequent writing in the classroom should pay attention to this caveat: frequent writing should be coupled with reasonable instruction. In other words, I do not think allowing students to write in whatever form they wish would be beneficial. I think writing should also be paired with a concept that I want them to be working on getting better at, which ultimately relates to my end goals of instruction of visible, positive growth in their writing. The meta-analysis completed by George Hillocks found research that supported that free-writing should not be the focus of writing instruction. Writing has always been something I have enjoyed to do. Whether it is a paper for school, or a note to a friend. I find that it is a way that I feel I can freely express myself. I think that there is something very rewarding about putting thoughts down onto paper. One of my favourite forms of writing is journaling, and another form that I enjoy is writing poetry. In saying this I am often very hesitant in sharing my writing with other people, unless it is written specifically for them.
