Terraforming
Terraforming has been explored in science fiction for years, but improving technology, along with concerns such as population growth and expenditure of natural resources, are causing terraforming to become a possibility. Population growth is the most obvious reason for terraforming. The world’s population is expected to rise steadily for the next 50 years; although the rate of population growth decreases slightly each year, the world population is estimated to increase by about half its current size between 2004 and 2050 (1). Barring any disaster that could cause a dramatic population decrease, humans will eventually overrun the amount of space available on Earth. Another concern is the availability of the Earth’s natural resources. Humans use Earth’s resources for energy and commodities. According to the Living Planet Report 2002, approximately 20% more resources than can be naturally replenished are harvested from the Earth each year. If this rate continues, two Earths would be required to supply resources by the year 2050; if the rate of overconsumption increases, resources will run out even sooner (2). These figures indicate that humans must find another source of resources to support themselves. Successful attempts at terraforming would have huge social consequences for humanity. A parallel could be drawn between settling another planet and the settlement of the American colonies. There could be wars between countries to claim the territory similar to those waged in the so-called “New World”. Also, a new government would have to be established to bring order to the new territory. A colony on another planet would probably become an elitist colony. When a problem is noticed by parents or teachers a child gets diagnosed based on his/her difficulties. Sometimes a diagnosis may not be possible, or necessary. Many children with milder SLCN (speech, language and communication needs) can be supported well in their school or nursery setting, or respond well to general support strategies, and they don’t need specific help.

I am responding to the request to analyze Radley Balko’s article, “What You Eat Is Your Business” and make a recommendation for or against publication in The Shorthorn at University of Texas at Arlington. In order to respond, I have examined the rhetorical appeals of Balko’s piece and determined why this article should be posted in the next edition of The Shorthorn. I believe that the Shorthorn audience would be interested in what is being discussed regarding of obesity, things that could potentially affect their lifestyle as well as the professors. In “What You Eat Is Your Business”, Balko claims that obesity is the responsibility of the individual not the government, and how our government is allowing American to live an unhealthy lifestyle
Despite the increasing amount of scientific evidence that support global climate change, many countries still use fossil fuels. The U.S. in particular is considering the revitalization of the coal industry instead of focusing on the production of clean energy. This inability to change will eventually lead to our downfall and our world will become like that of Lauren’s. In order for our survival, we have to seek out other planets because we are not changing fast enough for the sake of our planet. As our world’s climate continues to change rapidly, our resources are running and we are starting to split the world’s population into two groups: the wealthy and the poor. This is a sign that our world might become like that of Lauren’s dystopia. We cannot continue to live in this world with the belief that there is a world after death, like Lauren says, “We'll adapt. We'll have to. God is Change” (Butler, 147). We, human race, have to adapt and change or else we will eventually disappear. There is no supernatural being that can save us from our own destruction because the human race refuses to change. The first part of the metaphor “Pave the Planet” is a solution that resorts to the globalization movement of using the world’s technological advancements. With this method a capitalist society believes that in order to gain more wealth and success it is necessary for the society to keep using the world’s resources, producing products, and consuming these products. This belief of consistent greed and competition to gain more and more wealth is derived from “the fact that humans are fundamentally self-centered” (79). Although these beliefs and values seem immoral and corrupt, this method has proven quite a success for the global economy in the past. In the Article “Don’t Blame the Eater”, the author, David Zinczenko discounts many details while adverting his notion that Fast Food Corporations are at fault for obesity in adolescents. Zinczenko uses rhetoric, and personal experience to divert the reader’s attention to the emotional aspects of the above mentioned argument instead of showing genuine refutable actualities. At the start of his article Zinczenko complicates matters when he writes “And the problem isn’t just theirs- it’s all of ours.”, implying that we contribute to obesity misfortunes among children. However, his personal account about being a teen who acquired a large quantity of weight because of an assiduous mother, and lack of food alternatives contradicts the statement
Recreational athletes, competitive athletes, high school athletes, college athletes, and professional athletes all have one thing in common: the risk of a concussion. It's impossible to go a season without one athlete from a team receiving a concussion. The more that these concussions are studied, the more we learn about them, such as their detrimental effects on athletes. Because of the risk of health issues and death that come with concussions, doctors, coaches, athletic trainers, and lawmakers are stepping in to protect athletes of all levels from receiving concussions.

Alan Kamhi (2006) understood treatment options are not easy to choose because “there is no simple prescription for choosing an intervention approach because clinical expertise and client values will vary” (p. 272). Helping a child succeed needs more than one person’s help. A great way for children’s speech impediments to disappear is if every person in those children’s lives to be active teachers. Yauch (1952) believed that the speech correctionist must “help the teacher become more competent” because the student’s improvement will be more “consistent” (p. 98). Instead of a student going to a speech therapist two or three times a week as their cure, parents, relatives, siblings, and teachers must participate in the student’s therapy. If treatment effort is begun promptly, “75% of children with speech delay normalize their speech errors by age 6” (Kamhi, 2006, p. 272). How can society make that percentage increase? Children usually go to treatment with a specialized therapist for two to three hours a week. If parents, teachers, and siblings start to help too, the child has treatment 24/7, which will help the child’s disorder disappear much faster. The way this is possible is for the parents and teachers to have a meeting with the school’s speech therapist to explain what the child has trouble on, what part of the mouth the impediment is coming from, words that are often pronounced wrong by the child, and ways to help
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how Speech Sound Disorders affect the development of early literacy skills. This topic is particularly valuable to parents and teachers of language learners because working with individuals who manifest persistent speech errors and language difficulties may have a difficult time developing literacy skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. A Speech Sound Disorder occurs when language errors continue past a certain age. This may require that a language teacher intervene with explicit and adapted remedial speech or literacy instruction. To understand Speech Sound Disorders in greater detail, I will explore the most common characteristics of a Speech Sound Disorders and how it relates to the phonological process, generally supposed contributors of these speech delays, the predictors and challenges for literacy outcomes, and the most effective approaches and phonological interventions practiced.
