Have you ever thought about life or death, more so a person choosing life or death. Some people have had suicidal thoughts. What if it was legal to kill yourself with the help of a trained professional? Say someone commits suicide and you come home and find their body and see in full flesh what they did to themselves, it would be a scaring and horrifying sight that no one should have to witness. This would make it easier with, terminal illness, depression, and it would make suicide a lot cleaner and easier for family to cope with. Terminal illnesses affect many people today. In 2015 15,112,098 people were diagnosed with cancer. 75 of those people chose to end their lives early in Oregon. The thought of knowing when your going to die is scary and providing people with the power to choose their time provides a lot more closure. Just last year there were 760 suicide 56 of them were tied to terminal illnesses. Having the power to end your own life surrounded by family and loved ones would be alot better. …show more content…
Every year 16 million people are diagnosed with depression. Depression causes hopelessness and suicidal thoughts, anxiety, loss of interest in activities, overeating, and over tiredness. A very large portion of people never report their depression leaving them alone. People who go to they therapist to get help are expecting help, but what happens when it doesn't help, there going to fall into deeper depression thinking that their incurable and it will ultimately result in
When faced with a terminal illness a person has to go through a process of thinking. What will happen to me? How long will I suffer? What kind of financial burden am I going to leave with my family when I am gone? What are my options? For many years the only legal options were to try a treatment plan, palliative care, hospice, and eventually death. For residents of Washington State, Oregon, and Vermont there is another option. They have the option to end their own life with a prescription from their physicians.
The right to die gives patients a sense of power. These patients have lost almost all control of their physical health, the only thing they have left, is to enjoy their last weeks or months of living. With the chance of being to get assisted physician suicide it gives the patient a chance to go out and explore, laugh, and have fun with their loved ones. In a YouTube video Brittany Maynard did she expresses how she feels about her terminal illness taking over her body. “My body has changed so quickly, you
Today's society is now introduced to one of the most controversial issues; assisted suicide. Just like in other controversial arguments, there are many people that feel that it is wrong for people to ask their healthcare provider to end one's life; while others feel that if the person is terminally ill and has given their will to die, that they can be assisted in suicide. Though both sides are reasonable many people believe that people should not take part in helping someone take their own life, assisted suicide should be legal because, it plays a factor of conquering one’s feelings, gives an option to those whom are terminally ill or in immense pain, and every human
As covered previously, this would help the patients cope with their illness and the death process. Patients suffering with terminal illness deserve to have this right and freedom of euthanasia. Some might argue that patients wouldn’t take advantage of this legalization, but the suffering human deserves to have the option simply because of the freedom of choice. According to Terry Pratchett (a famous author who was diagnosed with a rare form of Alzheimer’s), “As I have said, I would like to die peacefully with Thomas Tallis on my iPod before the disease takes me over and I hope that will not be for quite some time to come, because if I knew that I could die at any time I wanted, then suddenly every day would be as precious as a million pounds. If I knew that I could die, I would live. My life, my death, my
Legalization of Assisted suicide and Euthanasia would free those diagnosed fatally ill from an agonizing death. Some would argue that pain is manageable with strong narcotics, yet “Only 40-60% of pain … gets relieved …. about ⅓ of patients have pain that is intolerable, not controlled when it could be” (Wolfe n. pag.). And when pain is managed and, “the ravages of… diseases often cause incontinence, severe weight loss, dementia, nausea and other symptoms that...
By ending the suffering that patients of terminal illnesses go through, it gives people the comfort of knowing they have the choice if they get to that stage, a choice anyone should be entitled to without question.
Many people who are in need of this treatment are patients with incurable illnesses, diseases and disabilities such as terminal cancer, long term affects of Alzheimer's or a quadriplegic disability. Unfortunately many people do not have access to assisted dying therefore they result to different methods to ease the pain in their mind and body. For example, in 2012 Kelly Taylor had “locked” syndrome, where she was unable to move any muscle in her body. She did not have the chance to experience assisted-dying no matter how much she wanted it, for this reason she resulted in starving herself for 19 days only to realize the pain was too unbearable and that she had to start eating again to ease the pain. However her mental state was extremely low and dangerous that she had to be constantly watched by doctors, friends and family which relates with her dignity. If assisted-dying was an option for Kelly Taylor, her last days of living would have been much better than her attempts of suicide and having a constant fear of never moving again. It would also relieve the pain of her friends and family because they would not be in constant fear that she would hurt herself again, and it would also relieve their stress and pain for both Kelly and her family. This is how physician-assisted suicide can benefit not only the patient but the people around them too and what would consistently happen if we extinguish this
For most, having a terminal illness could be depressing. Sometimes it hurts too much for them and they can’t do normal activities. For example, how would you feel if all of a sudden at the age of twenty five you come down with some terminal illnesses like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis? Where your body is slowly shutting down and you can’t perform normal activities like you would on your own. You now need permanent help to do everything from going to the bathroom to talking. No one should have to live their lives this way. Some are even in excruciating pain hoping to die at any moment so they pain would just go away. This is why doctor assisted suicides would help them. It would end their pain and suffering so they can finally be
People die every twelve seconds, and are born every eight. As human beings, we believe that we should have a say over what happens to us. But when we give ourselves the power over others we can easily start to dictate their lives, and that human flaw starts many debates. Right now, someone is being diagnosed or dying of a terminal illness young people, old people, and even children, however, with today's technology and advancements, patients are given a choice. In some states, hospitals offer assisted suicide, a doctor prescribed type if suicide. But with such drastic and permanent effects the act of assisted suicide is widely and ruthlessly debated. I believe that a person should be allowed to make their own decision
When death nears, a person may choose to receive palliative care. This type of care helps control the pain, but the pain will always take place in a person’s body. They receive so many pain medications in order to feel no pain. It does not make sense to have so many drugs in a person’s system that it causes fatigue and nausea. Palliative care takes place in a hospital or at a nursing home where a person could spend their last moments. When a loved one has to receive treatment in the hospital, it puts pressure and stress on the family. A patient receives care and dies at home, the family seems more comfortable and relieved by the idea that their loved one has perished in peace. Once reform happens, it may be easier for patients to choose certain preferences that help aid their dying process when the time comes. Physicians have the responsibility to give attention to a patient that may choose to plan and end their life with assisted suicide. Patients need to have informative options. Once society accepts that assisted suicide can have a role in the death decision, preferences would help the family and patient make a tough decision easier. People who have cancer live with pain every day. Maynard, who had a brain tumor, once said “Who thinks they have the right to tell me that I don’t deserve this choice? That I deserve to suffer for weeks or months in tremendous amounts of physical and emotional pain” (Kotva, 2016). Even if Maynard happen to reside in a hospital, covered in tubes, her family would have suffered
From the perspective of financial concerns, providing the right to die to terminally ill children could discontinue the meaningless medical treatments (because the death is almost destined), save great amount of medical and financial resources, and alleviate the emotional and financial burdens of parents (including other family members) as well as health insurance companies (so they could help other people).
Ever noticed one of your friends was sad, it seemed a little more than just that, that’s depression. Depression is more than just being occasionally sad, this is a serious illness. This illness causes so many to hide from others and feel as though they are worthless. Depression is an illness that has been around for as long as anyone can remember. This illness is in the brain, it is a chemical imbalance that causes a person to become overly sad. Along with this, sometimes they even want to end their life. Although depression is this serious, society takes it and makes it out to look like a way to get attention. This has resulted in not enough being done for people suffering from depression. Depression is a real illness and we need to make
I also hope to view that giving the person the right to decide when and how to end their life when suffering from a terminal illness is also a way of preserving the quality of an individual’s life when they are faced with terminal illness. I take the view that evening individual the right to choose when and how to end their life when suffering from terminal illness help them to preserve the quality of their life because it gives them the option to end their life before they begin to lose themselves. I say this because often diseases like Cancer and Alzheimer’s can cause an individual’s brain to deteriorate therefore the individual who is suffering from the disease is gone before their body succumbs to the disease. Therefore given the person the option to end their life before this happens allows them to choose how they want their last days with her family and friends to be remembered. I find that giving the person who is suffering from a terminal illness the right to secure their legacy in this way to be a far more life-affirming way of preserving the sanctity of an individual’s life than forcing them to suffer a long and painful death from a terminal
Terminal illness can make someone’s life completely miserable, and assisted suicide would ensure that their lives would not be horrible.
Nobody wants to feel sad and hopeless but with depression that 's how you feel all the time. Untreated depression is a serious cause, there can be many different downfalls to this such as suicidal thoughts or committing suicide, insomnia, loss of appetite, the need of hurting yourself and mixed emotions. Did you know 90% of people who die from suicide have depression or other mental disorders ( Goldberg 3). Should depression go untreated? No, depression shouldn’t go untreated because they feel alone, but they need to take the necessary step of looking for help even if it’s without medication. A person with depression should not have to feel like they have to depend on pills to be happy again because pills do not work. It is all mental and if you believe medication is the only answer your gonna keep thinking to yourself that depression is okay. Don’t let antidepressants be something you depend on because every antidepressant has it’s side effects that make you feel worse than you already do without
