Imagine thinking in pictures instead of words. Everytime someone said a word, it turned into the form of a picture. This is called visual thinking. Many people with autism think this way because their mind doesn't function the way ours does. Temple Grandin is one of the many people with autism. Autism creates challenges for her so she uses her visual thinking to overcome her challenges which leads to her successes. Temple Grandin is an advocate for autism.
Temple Grandin had many challenges in her early life as well as her later life. When she was very little she couldn't speak good like all the other kids her age. To help her overcome this she had to go to therapy and she had a mentor to guide her and help her start speaking. Her mom also
She didn’t have many friends and she struggled to focus at school: “Much of the time I feel like a person on mars” (“Temple Grandin”). She felt like she didn’t fit in. She felt like nobody wanted to be her friend just because she had autism. She overcame this challenge by having her science teacher help her study and stay focused in school. He challenged her because he knew she was smart and just needed a little bit of extra attention. She also overcame this by using her visual thinking ability to visualize ways to overcome things that challenged her: “Today I have a successful career designing farm animals equipment because my high school science teacher, Mr.Carlock, used my constant obsessive thought on chutes to give me a reason to study thinking, thinking behavior and science” (“Temple Grandin”). For example, her science teacher had her try to solve an optical illusion which she used her visual thinking to help her solve the optical illusion. She needed to really put her mind into the optical illusion. This challenge lead to her success of building a dip vat. She used her visual thinking to test run the dip vat in her head to make it run smoothly. She had to revise her idea many times in her head to make it less painful for the cattle. She never gave up and she is a very good influence to many kids and
