Imagine thinking in pictures instead of words. Everytime someone said a word, it turned into the form of a picture. This is called visual thinking. Many people with autism think this way because their mind doesn't function the way ours does. Temple Grandin is one of the many people with autism. Autism creates challenges for her so she uses her visual thinking to overcome her challenges which leads to her successes. Temple Grandin is an advocate for autism.
Temple Grandin had many challenges in her early life as well as her later life. When she was very little she couldn't speak good like all the other kids her age. To help her overcome this she had to go to therapy and she had a mentor to guide her and help her start speaking. Her mom also
She didn’t have many friends and she struggled to focus at school: “Much of the time I feel like a person on mars” (“Temple Grandin”). She felt like she didn’t fit in. She felt like nobody wanted to be her friend just because she had autism. She overcame this challenge by having her science teacher help her study and stay focused in school. He challenged her because he knew she was smart and just needed a little bit of extra attention. She also overcame this by using her visual thinking ability to visualize ways to overcome things that challenged her: “Today I have a successful career designing farm animals equipment because my high school science teacher, Mr.Carlock, used my constant obsessive thought on chutes to give me a reason to study thinking, thinking behavior and science” (“Temple Grandin”). For example, her science teacher had her try to solve an optical illusion which she used her visual thinking to help her solve the optical illusion. She needed to really put her mind into the optical illusion. This challenge lead to her success of building a dip vat. She used her visual thinking to test run the dip vat in her head to make it run smoothly. She had to revise her idea many times in her head to make it less painful for the cattle. She never gave up and she is a very good influence to many kids and
First person point of view is someone telling you their story and using “I” and referring it to themselves. The intended audience for this novel is anyone willing to learn about her life, other autistic families and individuals that share similar disabilities like her. She stated on her website she would not recommend this book for young children. Temple Grandin had a specific style as an author; that would not be appropriate for young children. She wrote formally and used personal experiences to closely relate to her life. Her quality of writing was very professional and well written, especially with her disability. The novel was completely original since it was based on her true life story. The book had overall excellent clarity. The book was easy to follow and was not confusing, which is great especially if other autistic individuals wanted to read about her life to see if they can relate. The way this book was written definitely suits the intended
She likes to share her knowledge and teach others things, like when she was talking to Montag for the first time: " 'Did you know that once billboards were only twenty feet long? But cars started rushing by so quickly they had to stretch the advertising out so it would last. [...] There's dew on the grass in the morning. [...] And if you look [...] there's a man on the moon.' He [Montag] hadn't looked for a long time," (Bradbury 7). She makes people think and wonder.
Grandin acknowledges that people with autism do think differently than those without it, however, throughout the majority of her article she categorizes people as different types of thinkers. Within the article she categorizes people as either language, visual, or audio thinkers. Why would Temple Grandin classify people this way rather than just keeping it autistic and on autistic? Grandin’s usage of “thinkers” is due to the fact everyone thinks differently, regardless of being autistic or not. She categorizes into these types of thinkers to explain what the world looks and sounds like to others.
Before completing the assignment of reading “Thinking in Pictures,” by Temple Grandin, I did not have much knowledge about autism. My only understanding was autism was some sort of neurological disorder that is seen similar to mentally handicapped individuals to someone with little understanding, like myself. I am very thankful to have been given an assignment like this one that gives me more knowledge of something I should already have in my line of work (though I am sure that was the whole purpose of the assignment, to educate the ignorant). I now have a better understanding of the cause, learning process and functioning of different levels of this defect.

This book can also help numerous medical professionals such as speech-language pathologists and pediatric doctors. As Grandin stated in the book that not all sufferers act, think, and feel the same so this novel may not be beneficial to readers who are looking for information on a wide scale of individuals who suffer from the illness. She also stated that there is no cure for autism, however some medications can help with some symptoms such as depression or anxiety. What intrigued me the most about Grandin was that she never gave up and worked on her social skills. Not only did she became a spokesperson for autism, but also became a professor at Colorado State University in which both require public speaking and being comfortable in front of people.

Even so, they do not display the exact same traits and behaviors. Whereas Grandin thinks in pictures and employs this unique gift for practical use, Christopher thinks in patterns and fails communicate his talents with others. Doing so cannot change ones past but only add to their future. Ellen will always carry the horrors of her childhood with her but by using all of her assets that she gained throughout the book her future can be enriched.

Upon moving back to her mother at the age of eight, tragically, Ms. Angelou was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. Revealing her rapist resulted in her uncles taking matters in to their own hands, which also resulted in the death of her mother’s boyfriend.
