Television's Effect on Teens
Today, television is getting more and more popular with the younger
generation. Many teenagers spend their spare time watching the
television. Television is bad for teenagers in numerous cases, and
this essay is going to explain why.
A great deal of teenagers in today's society goes home from school
with work to do, and as soon as they enter the door, they sit in front
of the television. This happens day after day, week after week and
year after year. Teenagers do not think of homework as practice for
exams that will do them good; they think of it more as a punishment,
or something they have to do. After a short time, examinations crop
up, and the students are not ready for them due to lack of
preparation, (or in this case, too much television). From my own
experience, I have gone home and watched television. It got me
nowhere, so I started concentrating on my work.
Together with the problem mentioned above, there is the issue over
explicit content being displayed too early in the evening. Misleading
messages encourages teenagers to act in ways in which they wouldn't
normally. For example, there is adult material being broadcasted from
9.30 now, and from 8.00, there are films including bad language,
violence. The average time for teenagers to go to bed is about 10.00
to 10.30. This leaves plenty of time to watch such material.
Despite the bad side, as you may be aware, there are channels of
intellectual content, such as the National Geographic/History Channels,
and there is the news which is on practically every channel. This is
all very well, but I do not agree that many people watch such
channels. Many teenagers watch programmes of interest to them, for
example comedy, action etc. A very small percentage watches these
intellectual programmes, (20%).
Furthermore, one of the worst factors of television is that there is
the un-motivating side. When teenagers watch too much television, they
do not exercise as regularly as they should, therefore becoming

Even when they do speak, their heads are down so that the telescreen cannot see them speaking. Their actions towards each other are a direct result of their fear of these screens. They avoid them whenever possible, and when they do speak in front of them the conversations are always short and extremely well planned out.

The entertainment that television is now portraying is not exactly what the younger society of America needs to be exposed to, but unfortunately in today's economy that is the only kind of entertainment that sells. There is so much unnecessary exposure to violence, aggressive behavior, and sexual acts now being broadcasted daily on television, movies, music, and even the news. The broadcasting systems are now targeting younger children and teens. The crime rates have skyrocketed due to delinquent juvenile behavior over the past ten years. The whole viewing society is now becoming very tolerant and at ease with sex and violence. Youth and children are picking up on these behaviors daily. Studies have shown that by the age of 18, the average American teen will have viewed around 200,000 acts of violence on television. The violence and sexual content that television and music are now portraying has negatively influenced younger children and teens to commit murder, exhibit aggressive behavior, and become tolerant of violence and sex.

Our generation has been raised in a technological advanced world and there has been definite controversy over many of these innovations that this new culture has brought. An innovation that has troubled the youth of America for many years is television. Although there is no certainty to eliminate this 'plug-in drug,'; there are many ways to control and monitor your television as a parent.
Without a doubt, television is the central and principal form of communication in many people’s lives. This form is most often exposed to a child who instantly becomes accustomed to its presence. Children are televisions largest audience, as Morris shows, “Children aged two to five look at the TV tube on an average of 28.4 hours a week; those between the ages of six and eleven average 23.6 hours a week”. Television has played an important role in many children’s lives and its viewing has been a favorite activity for many of them. The effects of television on children have been disputed. Some people have said that viewing time has a negative impact on children. Other people, however, feel that the early educational television productions for children help tehm learn.
Does violence on television have a negative effect on children and teenagers? The violence shown on television has a surprisingly negative effect. Television violence causes children and teenagers to become less caring, to lose their inhibitions, to become less sensitive, and also may cause violent and aggressive behavior.
