Children and Television Violence
The children of America spend their time on many different activities.
One of the most time consuming activities is watching television. Television
plays a large role in the social and emotional development of children today.
One good quality that television has is that it conveys information and
happenings around the world that they may not otherwise know about, but some
people have been questioning whether television does more harm than good. Many
have been analyzing what affect violence in adult shows as well as children's
shows may have on children.
Most parents allow their children to watch so called "kid's shows"
without even thinking about what might be contained within them. How many times
has a certain hunter been seen hunting a certain "wascally wabbit"? Most people
would say "how can a cartoon about a man hunting affect a child?" At first it
may seem that it has no effect, but, looking closer, it is easy to see that Bugs
Bunny has many human traits. Two of these traits are speaking English and
walking upright. Something else that adds to this is that sometimes children
cannot make the distinction between fantasy and reality. Quickly a cartoon
about a man hunting a rabbit can turn into a story of murder. Another cartoon
character that may harm children is Yosimite Sam. When he becomes angry, he
begins to fire his pair of guns into the air and at other characters. This
could cause children to act violently to appease their anger. This includes
hitting and throwing things. This is an extreme view of the situation, but who
is to say that at least part of it is not true?
Children see violence everyday in their cartoons, but what about shows
that they watch in which people star. These shows will more than likely cause
more violence than cartoons would. While watching a show such as "Mighty
Morphin Power Rangers" a child sees almost 30 minutes of non-stop fighting. The
show also has a fantasy story that appeals to children. After watching the show,
a child may become bored because the reality of the television show is more
interesting. The child then imitates what was seen on television. This is
where the actual violence may begin. Adult shows and movies that are seen by
children could have even worse effects than children's shows. In one documented
case, a Californian boy that was seven years old watched a movie one night. In
the movie, a man put glass into soup that a colleague of his was to eat.
Rusty-James is with Motorcycle Boy when he decides to break into a pet store releasing all of the animals. The police come and shoot motorcycle boy as he is running with a fish toward the river to set them free.
From the brush came the huge crack of a gun being fired. George dropped his gun, and Lennie was frozen in time for a split second, then he fell over in front of George’s feet. He was gone.
The ancient Greek was one of the most well-known civilization throughout history. This civilization was known for their history, philosophy, religion, and specially sculpture. One of the dominant ones was their sculpture. By studying the ancient Greek sculpture, one can see that there were different shifts. Historians tell us that these different shifts took place during the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Dark Ages, the Archaic, the Classical, and the Hellenistic Age. The three major shifts in ancient Greek sculptural development that we need to analyze are the Archaic, the Classical, and the Hellenistic sculpture.

Greek art was seen as more than a means to decorate with its more popular use was that of storytelling and recording historical events. Greek art dates from the seventh to the second century. The eras included in historical Greek art are: Geometric, Archaic, Classical, and the Hellenistic (Sowerby150). All of the eras are similar in that they build on the previous era and lead to more detailed and dramatic artwork. The use of human actions as subjects gained intensity with each new era. The Greeks focused much of their attention on painting their many gods. Yet, commonplace people were still used in paintings on things such as grave markers. (Sowerby151). Painting in particular was a means to convey a story and to retain history. " … Greek artist was obliged to encapsulate the narrative and message of a story in a single scene" (Boardman301). Nothing had immunity from the paintbrush as everyday items such as drinking cups and water jugs were also adorned with paintings ( Carpenter207).
Have you ever looked at someone and thought, I wonder what made him/her the way she is today?” When you do this, you often have to look back on a person’s childhood. How did certain events affect them? Over time violence has become dramatically evident is children’s lives. Parents do not seem to be careful with their children’s viewing habits. They are beginning to let them watch whatever is on TV. For example: Family guy, all those shows on Adult swim. These violent TV programs could cause so many problems for the children and parents later on in life. Parents should carefully monitor children’s viewing habits so they have limited exposure to violence, increase their physical activity, and decrease aggressive behavior.
With school shootings becoming a frequent occurrence in our country, we have to ask the question on whether or not the violence produced in children has been influenced by his or her surroundings. Could the violence seen in television shows lead the way to these actions? With these violent situations growing we have to start looking into this issue. TV programs should be held moderately responsible for the violent actions of children because they promote negative influences.
Perhaps one of the most defining and easily identifiable aspects of the ancient Greek culture was the immortalization of humans and gods in sculpture. Sculpture had existed in the world for thousands of years before the ancient Greeks made their stake in the art, but the Greeks added an entirely new set of aspects to their sculptures. Unlike the Egyptian and Mesopotamian sculpture centuries earlier, the Greeks set forth not just to capture the image of a man but to capture that which made him a man. The Greeks set in place three base tenants to display the tone of a sculpture. Through the use of Humanism, Realism, and Idealism the ancient Greeks were able to capture humans and gods forever in marble.
The first definable period of Greek pottery, Geometric (c. 900-700 BCE), accounts for the majority of ancient vase painting still in existence today; and as such, affords us the broadest view into this art form. The period attributes its name to the geometric forms that artists used to detail their vessels. The primary decorative motifs that distinguish the period include parallel lines, concentric
There is a strong agreement among American society that violence in the country is on the rise. It is easy to see why this is a strong argument among the American people, especially because of the rising popularity of violent video games and television programs. However, as these violent video games and television shows are creating their own place in our society, the reports of violence among children are escalating. This correlation has been studied extensively in the scientific community in an attempt to discover whether media violence does negatively impact children but there has yet to be a consensus. There is a split between those that believe that children are becoming more violent because they are exposed to violent media and those that believe that correlation is not causation, who argue that media violence does not have any notable effect the youth.
Over a period of time Greek art of the past has changed and evolved into what we value in todayís society as true art and services as a blue print of our tomorrow. As we take a closer look at the Geometric Period and stroll up through the Hellenistic Period allow me to demonstrate the changes and point out how these transitions have served the elements of time.
Ancient Greek sculptures were the mix of Egyptian and Syrian styles. In 800 to 300 B.C., Greek sculptures had a powerful inspiration throughout the centuries. The Greek sculpture was divided into seven periods: Mycenaean, Sub-Mycenaean or Dark Age, Proto-Geometric, Geometric, Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic (Collins 1). Greek sculptures were created by using marble, bronze, stone, and limestone, but bronze was in most demand. The most common production to make Greek sculpture is the lost-wax method. First, the sculptors would make clay inside the core, almost the size of a figure which was then coated in wax. Then, they would replace the melted wax with bronze. When the bronze became solid, the sculptors would remove the clay. Finally, the sculpture would be polished and added with other decorations. Most Greek sculptures were in a freestanding of a human form because Greeks saw beauty in human body form. Early Greek statues were rigid and straight, but later on, the Greek adopted more natural relaxed pose: knees and arm bent, and head turned. Greek artists captured the human pose in a way never seen before with concerns in proportion, pose, and perfection of the human body (Cartwright 1). Most of these statues are signed by artists, so there are six famous sculptors in Ancient Greece. The f...
America is expressed of diversity, freedom of speech, and personal value. Suddenly, music censorship became a social controversy through politics, society, and the internet. The USA became a benefactor for music censorship when Black music, such as hip-hop, pop, and others, arrived in the country. Music censorship targets inappropriate songs, so society shouldn’t go against music censorship, unless there’s a strong reason. A strong, predominant image is supposed to executed on minors, individuals, and families through the music radio by the DJ, who broadcasts music through the radio . Music censorship affects people, concerns the government, reigns longer through history, and causes a dystopian balance in the American-arts-exposed society.
