In today’s society there are plenty of people who think that television is positive effects and influences on our American culture. It provides useful information about what is going on in the world and also give us numerous forms of education and entertainment. How does television effect our youth today? Television is becoming more and more significant in children lives. How can we determine what are children are taking away from television isn’t good thing?
Television plays a major positive part in children's daily activities. Children need this type of learning experience along with the basic reading, writing, and arithmetic. Television is not only good for their education but also for their imagination. Children need to learn at an early age that anything and everything is possible. Children get a great deal of information from watching television.

It provides real life images, sounds, and interaction that kids brain need to grasp certain concepts. It is amazing how the teachers could be trying to their class a word all day, but they learn a word on television. Then go home and tell their parents the word that they learned. People learn things in different ways. Sometimes it is harder for some adults to grasp a concept than others. So when it comes it children it is even more of a challenge. Kids need patience and have to be able to relate to certain concepts to grasp them. For example: “Dora the Explorer” is a television shows where pre-school kids can learn how to say simple words and numbers is English and Spanish. The show makes the kids interact with Dora by answering her questions, singing songs to help her solve problems, and also identifying different colors, shapes and objects. The show help expands kids interaction with adult and more important with other kids. Most of the time if kids hear something over and over they will pick it up and start saying
The media has been a part of the daily life of the American people for the longest time, because of this fact, the media influences the decisions and views of how people should live. One big part of the media that tends to start to develop a sense of how the day-to-day American should live is Disney. Since kids are the main source of Disney’s billion dollar industry children have become an important dimension of the social theory (Giroux 1999: 65). “Within this context, television emerges as a consumer-oriented medium that reflects advertisers’ desire to reach a young, upscale, and primarily White audience” (Goodale1999; Henderson and Baldasty 2003: 100). As a result other races and ethnic groups other than white Americans are often put aside when it comes to the social media view of how Americans should live.
It may be hard to admit, but television has become an intricate part of our everyday lives. People children often find themselves sitting in front of the television screen for a longer period of time than before and this has evolved immensely over the past few years. In this article, “The Trouble with Television,” by the author Marie Winn, mentions that addiction of television is negative effects on children and families. It keeps the families from doing other things and it’s a hidden competitor for all other activities. Television takes place of play and on top of that kids who watch a lot of television grow uncivilized. Also, the author mentioned that televisions are less resourceful for children and have negative effects on children’s school achievement and on physical fitness. Although there are so many other types of addictions but the author Marie Winn’s points of argument of watching television is a serious addiction that our children and families have negative effects.
Television has become a big part in children’s day-to-day lives especially in the 20th century. Children in this century rely on television to keep them entertained and educated instead of entertaining and educating themselves by participating in activities, which will teach them a lot more in life then the actual television. It contains many educated channels, but some that arn't willing for kids to watch.
Media has had many changes in the past years. Growing up I remember my mom saying that we were lucky to have color televisions now. She would say that when she was younger she would have to hear her stories and games over the radio because back then there was no televisions. Another way of getting entertained was reading stories. The newspaper and the radio was the only way of getting news back then. I thought it was funny when my mom told me that since they were one of the few families that had a television in the neighborhood, she would charge the kids 10 cents to watch television in her house. This was actually a pretty smart thing to do.

Television is something that is easily accessible for any child. I can agree with Postman when he stated that the transformation of childhood was when literacy disappeared, education disappeared, shame disappeared and essentially childhood disappeared. Though, he predicted all of this in the 90’s, I see it happening every day. The culture of our current generation of children has completely changed from when I was a child and the young are more tech-savvy than generations before (Postman, 1994).
Television is everywhere these days, not just in our living rooms but in bathrooms, kitchens, doctor's offices, grocery stores, airplanes, and classrooms. We have access to TV virtually anywhere and as American's we are taking advantaged of it. Adults aren't the only ones watching TV; children today are watching more TV than ever before. Michael and Sheila Cole, sociologist, say that 'Children socialized to learn from television had lower than normal expectations about the amount of mental effort required to learn from written texts, and tended to read less and perform relatively poorly in school.';(Development of Children 24) Which means that it takes very little effort to follow a television show and kids are raised on television believe that it takes less effort to learn from television rather than books because they have been 'spoon-fed'; information by television. Another positive effect of television for kids is that it sort of opens their horizons to different things and people. Television, films, magazines, and social media sites expose teens and children, who might be otherwise be limited to interactions with people from their own cultural and ethnic backgrounds, to an array of different people”. Also, older children can learn about other cultures and political things that might not be talked about at home. Example of shows that increase your knowledge are ' who wants to be a Millionaire' and 'Weakest Link'. They have double value. They entertain and they simultaneously install knowledge by asking questions. These programmes usually make you scream at the television making you interact as well. Television can make educational issues entertaining and interest people especially the young people because children love Dinosaurs and bright colourful things.
