Should teens be limited to the amount of technology that’s exposed? We’ve all been or are going to be a teenager. There is no way to avoid it. Leisure has changed over time. The definition of leisure to any adult would be playing with friends in the street, doing some homework or maybe even working at a job. Today, it consists of texting on iphones/blackberries, watching T.V or going on social networks. Teens nowadays have Call of Duty, Jersey Shore, iPad and Facebook. It seems today that any teenager would agree that they can’t live without one thing: technology. Is technology straining ones ability to learn? Are our priorities straight? Scientists have been exploring this topic to help our society for a number amount of years already.
Technology has definitely evolved from 1900’s to the 2000’s. The first cell phone was made in 1947. The first computer was made in 1936. The first gaming system was made in 1958. Adults know names like Nokia, IBM, Atari and even Sony Walkmans. The technology boom was said to first start in the 1980’s. That’s when the first real cell phone was invented and the first call was made on the Motorola Dynatac. Technology still wasn’t big at that time though. Everything started in the new millennium. After all, its a new millennium, why wouldn’t things change?
A lot of new gadgets were introduced in with the incoming years to come. The first iPod, the iPod scroll (up to 5GB) , was made in 2001. Few years later, the iPod evolved to an iTouch (up to 64GB). The game console of the new year was the Playstation II. It evolved to Playstation III’s and Xbox 360. These game consoles has high definition graphics. What is the most important thing in your life? The answer most people give is their phone or laptop. The dependence and importance of technology has increased within the last decade. Bradbury has given us a warning of the obsession with technology in his writing, Fahrenheit 451. Montag saw how obsessed his society was with technology because he noticed how "Nobody listens anymore. . . I just want someone to hear what I have to say" (78). Montag is frustrated that people's opinions are no longer valid because the society is too busy focusing on the fascinating technology. As said by Jane Weaver on NBC, teenagers nowadays spend around 30 hours a week using technology. Thats over 4 hours a day spent watching television or playing games for no educational purpose whatsoever. The mania for technology has caused many to loose focus of more important things like achieving ones dreams.

Everything we do now is because of or with the help of some sort of technology. Our teenage population is more at risk here though, with all of the shortcuts cell phones and emails are doing to us. Our brains aren’t going to know how to properly function without some sort of device in the future. We may not even know how to do anything without technology in our near future. Technology is really diminishing our brain development drastically as we age into adults. We will eventually all become what Erikson expressed as a “Protean boy. Erikson could not accept that successful maturation would not result in something solid” (244). This meaning that the protean boy is someone who will never grow mentally because of technology. From smart phones to social media and computers to television, the technological influences of the modern day never cease to exist in some fashion. While these groundbreaking innovations can be used to access unlimited sources of information in an astonishingly short amount of time, many teenagers choose to overlook and ignore this incredible privilege. In his book, The Dumbest Generation, Mark Bauerlein depicts the circumstances behind the generation of technology and how it can jeopardize the future of America.
Teens may be technologically savvy, important in a culture reliant on technology, but have fewer skills in dealing with real people. The economic divide pushes those without financial means further from those with internet access and the latest gadgets. How did we survive as teenagers without cell phones and texting? Increasing reliance on e-communication puts those unable to avail themselves of technology at greater disadvantage as they enter adulthood and the workforce. Nevertheless, these problems are not confined to the youth of the world.
Born in the eighties, I entered a world of big hair and bad style. In the technological realm there were tape players, VCR’s, and fresh on the market: personal computers. Apple was domination the computer scene with their introduction of the Lisa computer. But not for long, soon computer technology would jump to unimaginable heights. As I grew up the technology around me would continue to grow and advance – quite rapidly I might add.

There has been a long lasting debate in the resent years on whether or not technology has a positive or negative impact on today’s kids. As the years move on, the negative effects have begun to outnumber the positive. Another example of the change in our technology over the last century is the change in the computer. In 1946, the first electronic computer called the ENIAC took up the space of a large room. Instead of using transistors and IC chips, the ENIAC used vacuum tubes. Compared to many computers now, the ENIAC is about as powerful as a small calculator. That may not be much, but it is a milestone because there would not be computers today if it were not for the ENIAC. As the years passed, the computer became smaller and more powerful. Today, more than half of the American population has a computer in their home. The personal computers today are thousands of times more powerful than the most powerful computers fifty years ago.

Technology use was on the rise but has shown a significant increased rate in recent years. Technology was a beneficial tool that was used on a daily basis. Technology industries had developed many devices like computers, laptops, smartphones, iPods, and many other devices that made technology easier to access from anywhere and anytime. Technology expanded every day and the usage increased which had an effect on society especially targeting teens. Teens abused the use of technology that caused them to have serious problems mentally and physically. Teens mainly focused on technology use and caused a social disconnection from the real world.
